Default Oroville Dam - a bit of Chicken Little?

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog...ville_dam.html

Quote:
The $1.1 billion spent to repair Oroville Dam is failing as water is seeping through the rebuilt spillway threatens new mass evacuations over the risk of the dam collapsing.

According to national dam expert Scott Cahill of Watershed Services of Ohio, Oroville Dam is on the same failure track as in 2017, with visible water seepage trickling from the foot of the dam and dozens of points along the dam's principal spillway. Cahill warns that warming temperatures magnified by precipitation is a growing threat to the dam.
Juan Browne posted an update March 3 -

Pretty snow and nice guitar at the beginning, Oroville update starts about 6 minutes in.

As long as the fox is in charge of the hen house I do not expect any real effort to fix/repair any issues with this dam or others. Remember it was " safe " a few years back for a few more years, spend the $$ on something else first, we will patch it up.

Oroville was Pat Brown's legacy water project. They rushed to get it built before he left office. I think it's fitting the sloppy work has come back to haunt his son.

Well, all of the construction companies got rich and there's no accountability for anyone else, so...Eff you taxpayers!

Kind of like the bullet-train-to-nowhere.

Politicians just say "oh well' and keep adding money to their accounts.

If they actually went to prison for wasting our money and lying, then something might change.

But, no. Nothing happens.

Water is coming from the gates not from under the spillway.

Interesting American Thinker doesnt actually link to this supposed Scott Cahill's statement on the seepage.

https://www.redding.com/story/news/l...ay/3078848002/

Quote:
California Department of Water Resources officials said Wednesday this is common and will not affect the operation of the dam's gates, which are not watertight.

“Once the lake reaches or exceeds the elevation of the entrance gates (813 feet) a small amount of water is expected to seep through the gates as they are not watertight,” water resources spokeswoman Erin Mellon said. “This is common and does not affect the operation of the gates nor the spillway.”

DWR in its latest update posted Tuesday it does not anticipate using the reconstructed main spillway in the coming days.

I couldn't find much about Cahill beyond his own web site and something a couple years old. Legend in his own mind? Don't know what his actual experience and training amount to.

Geriatric Clown just started throwing money at it and garbage nescum will most likely do the same thing as long as the unions keep feeding the politician's pocket !
Until some control is taken back by the REAL CITIZENS OF CALIFORNIA,,,,,nothing will change !

I know very little about it, but have seen several different places reference Scott Cahill as a sensationalist dummy.

I don't trust DWR at ALL, and the budget overrun was expected, but I'm wary of believing some random yahoo also.

The original had no rebar installed in it. Big problem. From what I have heard, the replacement spillway has rebar. Not so sure on the emergency spillway. I think they were just trying to fill it back in and then cover with concrete to minimize erosion

That's incorrect.

See the Juan Browne video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jf47yW4Wh-Q , at about 4:44 and 4:54 - rebar clearly visible.

The amount of rebar in the original slab was very sparse compared to what is in there now.

I stand corrected but I also agree with Dutch3 that it was minimal rebar and although the sides had better rebar, the majority of the slab has some rebar and anchor studs but it is very minimal, not even enough to support it as the excavator broke it up.

There is easily 100x more steel in the new deck than there was in the old one.

You mean good for a setting for a humorous fabrication about a guy who calls himself "ganja surfer" surfing the spillway?

Unless you think their other stories, like this one about a smug local centaur are also real. https://www.broadstreetbeacon.com/sm...le-fitting-in/

Dang, you mean the centaur story isn't real? The surfing one, I can't see how that could have worked but the centaur....
