Default Historical primer, ammo, and similar shortages...

I have now been through 3 shortages, but didn't keep track.

Can someone provide info on how long, historically the last of these shortages lasted, in month/years?

Thanks.

It'll be until this time next year, in my WAG opinion, before it starts getting reasonable again. I hope I'm overestimating the shortage, but I doubt it.

I found this on the Wikipedia, but I think this is mainly just ammo, and primers are effected in the aftermath:

WAS talking to a friend at one of the large wholesalers, he advised that if they did not sell another gun, at the current rate of supply, it would be spring before they were back up to the inventory levels they had waay back in Feb. Again if they stopped selling and just replenished inventory levels.

Yes, that seems to be the way I remember things. Both Obama and Sandy Hook shortages easily lasted at least two years each.

If I remember correctly, the 22 rimfire shortage lasted about a year. Durning the time, I never ran out but did run low. When it came back, I bought a bunch and I'm good for the rest of my life.

I see primers the same way. I'm not out but will stock up when they come back.

Wasnt there an earlier shortage due to rumors the manufacturers were going to add something to primers so they would have a fixed shelf life and not last indefinitely?

Most were around a year with the longest about one and a half. Odd how no one heeds the warnings given by the first ones. If you are a young one it makes sense but older folks should have all they need and then some.

^^^^^^^^
I got mine!
22 - should never need to buy another round
Rest - generally set for 5 years or more.
Will load up again when all the panic buying subsides.

I don’t think this will be like other shortages, it already had 2 facets. The china virus was a 2-fer, first it cause hoarding but it also limited production on a global scale. One would expect 1-2 years for availability and 2-3 years for pricing to return to normal. But then we get hit with Biden/Harris and that would be good for well over 18 months on it’s own. But my best guess is it’s going to be hell through the end of the Harris administration and probably a year after.

The rimfire shortage post Sandy Hook lasted 2+ years. We saw 9mm and 223 back on shelves in regular supply sooner than 22LR.

'09-'11ish LPP were especially hard to find. Think I paid like $35/50 for .45ACP. .357 Magnum brass was gold.

'13-'14ish .223/5.56 was $1/rd SRP were unobtanium. .22LR was $50+/brick. People camped at Walmart to get ammo to flip.

Now. Worser.

Without going into detail about my opinion on the topic, I think the shortages will last a good 6-9 months longer here than many other places. I think it will be less with certain things like primers/powder because hazmat will not only regulate local margins but also prevent flippers from easily shipping what they sell. But for everything else, I think itll be a long while because manufacturers not only have a huge backlog, but also supply chain shortages to deal with. Then you have to add the California premium of 6-9 months onto that.

I only have about 5k SPP but I'm flush with LPP and SPMP so I guess I'm shooting 1911's and .357 mags for the next decade

Each one is longer than the last. HAS been true since '92 in MY experience.

Rounded to the nearest penny, 14 cents per. It's $137.50 per thousand. Nine thousand small pistol and one thousand large rifle.

Someone is really desperate.
