Default Chinese ditch chickens

Fall is in the air.

I'm starting to get antsy for some wild ditch chickens.

Replenished my supply of #4 bismuth handloads.

Some truck/RV tasks.

Will be first time hunting with 2 young ( 2 year old) dogs. Hoping for some proud moments. Bodie hunted last year and while he was unimpressive at first, he learned a lot. Harley didn't get to hunt as he was convalescing from hip surgery. I did get him out for club birds a couple times in the Spring and he was impressive. Unfortunately Jager, at 13-1/2 year old, is retired with a heart condition. He's gonna pitch a fit when he doesn't get to go.

First week will be at Klamath/Tule Lake. So much better than most/all other refuges. No cattle line at 04:00. Good quantity of birds.

Then lower Sac valley for the remainder of the season.

Give a shout if you're interested in participating.

Good luck! I'd be curious if that area I told you about years ago produces this year or if you find better.

Have you talked with anyone up that way recently? I was in the area last spring to shoot squirrels and while the refuge seemed to be wet, the farmers had their water allocations cut to zero not long after.

I hope you find some birds. I also hope it rains and snows like crazy this season (I suppose I should also be careful what I ask for).

I didn't find much over there. Pretty spartan cover, no water. Mostly sage.

I'm sure some get chased over there and some prolly stick around ranches where their needs are met. But not so much on the 'fuge.

I have a good buddy who lives in Klamath. He's not a hunter, but can put some eyes on. Tell me if any crops got planted in the appropriate fields, water in ditch, etc. I need to contact him anyways. I bought a canoe a couple years ago to cross (mostly as a bridge) a couple ditches. Couple fields only have one dry way in if there's water in the ditch, so this gives us additional access. I left it with him. If I don't need it, I'll leave the roof rack at home.

I'm sure there's birds on the 'fuge. Whether they're on the pheasant hunting portion can be a different answer, but we've never struck out. Some years better than others of course. Not uncommon to see 100+ running around on the way in on closed or waterfowl only portions.

Well...one of my best pheasant buddies will be hunting SD in a week or two. I just can't justify the travel time. I could get you an invite.

The guy's ranch we hunt though quit farming, so let all his leased land go. We used to have 1500-2000 acres to hunt. Corn and soy. Still some private family land to hunt, but mostly hunted public last year. Native.

Thank you for a very generous offer. I would take you up on it, but I'm headed to Wyoming end of October/beginning of November with three tags to fill.

I have a friend in Oklahoma, and we've hunted the panhandle in the past. So many pheasants out there, and not a lot of people. Cold as hell, though!

When I retire (in 1 year, 7 months and 17...or is it 18 days...not that I'm counting), one of my goals is to travel the midwest during pheasant season and vagabond. Maybe pick up some Sharptails too.

So hook a brother up when the time comes.

If you need another shooter I may be available. I chip in for gas and such. Might even get you on a Turkey hunt if you are interested.

No shooters needed. Experienced chicken hunters with dog and their own accommodations welcome. We stay at the trailer park near sheepy ridge which is a few miles from Klamath entrance and maybe 1/2 hr to tule lake entrance. 4x4 not required but can be helpful if you have to park where itís less improved. Washboard gravel roads to be expected.

I spent many many nights in that RV park. Great memories.
