Default DIY: RUGER 10/22 Takedown Alignment Issue FIX.

i picked up my 10/22 TD from turners last night. when i inspected my rifle i noticed that it had an alignment issue, the fore end tilted to the left. turners kindly showed me 3 more new rifles and they all had that problem. i accepted the rifle because i trust the Ruger name.

i just got off the phone with Ruger and they explained to me how they fix the problem. so if you don't want to send your rifle back in and wait for it to be repaired continue reading. start at step 5 if you are not a 10/22 newb or a troll.

what you will need:

5/32 allen key.

step 1- safety check.
step 2- lock your bolt back and remove the magazine.
step 3- take down your take down.
step 4- put the fore end and barrel away you only need the receiver end.
step 5- using your 5/32 allen key loosen both screws (do not remove), allowing the piece of metal to move around.

step 6- using your thumb and index finger move the metal piece in the direction shown. (if it makes things worse try moving it in the opposite direction, your alignment issues may not be in the same direction as mine.)
step 7- while holding the metal piece in place with your finger tighten the screws.
step 8- assemble your take down rifle. you may need to adjust this a few more times before you hit center. (it took me 3 times before i was satisfied)

doing this fix will also tighten the connection a little. it will feel more snug. some believe that will improve accuracy.

About the gouges on the inside of the magwell. they are nothing to worry about, all of the guns have them. those two gouges is where the stocks are cut away from the mold. it is purely cosmetic.

GOOD LUCK!

i've witnessed 3 guys REJECT their 10/22 Takedowns because of the alignment issue. it's still cheaper to buy it from the store at a sale price, how much does an FFL charge you to do a transfer in your area? where i'm at it's about $140+tax ($90-$100 to "Rent" the FFL License, and $30-$40 for DROS + tax) weather you are buying from a far away gun shop or buying from your buddy.

Thanks for the info. I adjusted mine as best as I could. Hopefully this also takes care of my groupings always going to the right of bullseye.

I picked mine up two days ago and even Marion (the manager at Pasadena Turners) was surpirsed how perfect it lined up. He mentioned that most all of them were misaligned so he was shocked to see mine perfect out of the box. But thanks for the write up since a few buddies are getting theirs soon so I'll let them know how to fix if they have the issue.

Great info..thanks. Had my 10/22 take down out for the first time on Sunday. Didn't experience the same issue but the scope mount base kept loosening up on me.

Nice write up. Mine came perfectly aligned from the factory but I has to adjust the ring to tighten the fit between halves. That was a little sloppy or loose from the factory. What I do not like is the keeper ring for the adjustment ring is a loose sloppy fit but its held in by the barrel so I m not worrying about it.

My brother came over today and and we installed the auto bolt release, recoil buffer, extractor and I put a silver mag release lever into my 10/22 TD he did all but the mag release lever to his regular 10/22 and installed a new set of sights. I can't wait to go shoot them and see how they go with the mods.

I too was disappointed when I saw my 10/22 td was not aligned when assembled. I discovered the allen screws a week later and fixed it. The only other thing I don't like is the difficult rear sight adjustment. I like the factory sights, I just do not like to "drift" adjust them. I scratched the barrel trying to unsuccessfully adjust, as it was hitting high right. I finally put a $30 Tasco red dot sight on it which works fine.

To assure a good fit and go back to zero on the 10/22 TD, do the following:
1) Assemble and hand tighten ring as much as possible (don't use a tool)
2) Dissemble without loosening ring
3) While dissembled, tighten ring two more clicks
4) Reassemble without moving ring anymore.
You will not have to repeat this process very of, if at all. This will bring it back to zero for many many take downs and reassembly's.

I fixed mine a couple weeks ago using these instructions. It literally took me no more than 5 minutes with 3 tries. It is perfect now.

It's kinda sad that most of them have this problem, especially from a company like Ruger.

I sent mine back to Ruger for the fix. They were so apologetic that they threw in 2 more 10 Rd mags(he wanted to give me a couple 25 rounders but then he saw my address.... Ca). Two weeks and a couple extra mags was worth the wait for me.

You would think that Ruger would have picked up on this by now and fixed the problem. It sucks getting a rifle then realizing you have to work on it to make it the way it should have been.

Thank you very much....that alignment issue was making me crazy. I have had several people ask me how to fix their rifles and I had no idea how. I have one myself that is out of alignment and have not had time to mess with it. Great post!

I pick mine up Friday and didn't notice if it was misaligned but will be checking now. Thanks for the info.

I think they have so many with this issue due to the rush to get the guns out to the dealers prior to the availability announcement. I heard they shipped around 10K rifles prior to the kick-off.

One thing I think they could have done differently though would have been to include a clear mag with the rifle. After all it's a survival type weapon and an easily checked ammo supply would be a good thing.

Interesting, My ruger 10/22 takedown pulls slightly to the left so this may be the fix for it.

Yea... My LGS guy already on the phone with them.. Kinda sucks if I have to do DROS again... At 50 yards it was shooting something like 20 feet low. With the scope maxed out it was still 2 feet low.....

i see a mistake a made when writing that. i'll edit.

PPT = $35
Transfer from another store PPT or NEW = $90 - $100 FFL license rental + $35 for DROS + TAX on price of gun and shipping.

Default Picked up my 10/22 Take Down Today

Picked up my 10/22 today and no alignment issues at all. Did not get a chance to shoot it (will do Friday) but gun seems well put together. Mounted a silver Simmons 3-9x32 A/o scope on it and it looks great. Gun with scope fits in bag with no problems. Will get back on Friday after shooting it.

I think I'm going to buy a Ruger 10/22 TD soon. But I'm really new to this stuff, so can someone explain to me what is a alignment issue, and how to detect it?
Does anyone have a photo of an badly aligned one for reference?
