Default Fixed blade for vest setup

I have my Shellback plate carrier all setup with armor, rifle mags, pistol mags, radio, and hydration, and subcompact pistol.

What I don’t have is room on the front for my knife in a sheath.

I’m thinking of getting a new knife and mount it horizontal on the back of the vest in a plastic sheath so I can reach back and grab it.

2 knives and sheaths I’m looking at:
ESSE 3 p
Becker b k 7

Any opinions or suggestions on my knife choices or setup are welcome.

All good until some operator sneaks up behind you and cuts your throat with your own knife.

I think if you really need a knife on your carrier you should slot it in front or behind a mag pouch. Having a blade on your back doesn't seem all that useful to me.

How do you get it back in the sheath?

Love the comments
If someone sneaks up close enough to use my own knife on me I need enhanced hearing aids

Many knives have belt setups on the back, so not sure what mounting on the back of the vest would any different

Bring it on

Good point!
That could work, muscle memory by negative reinforcement.

Why not just mount an EDC knife by clipping it inside one of your pant's pockets?! What they heck are you decking out this vest for? Is this a LARPing/role play thing? Is the radio for your BFF so you guys can talk to each other at night after your parents tell you lights out, it's time for bed? Like the modern two tin cans and s string?

Get a katana. It's probably easier to reach for from the back.

One thing I found is that some kydex sheaths, though come with malice clips for molle - the clips aren't spaced correctly for standard pals webbing. I have an expensive NIB knife I'm thinking of selling because I can't attach it to anything- vertical or horizontal.

Mount it on the front of your rig, between or behind mags, in a location where you can grab it with either hand.

If you're on your stomach it's not too hard to roll a little to one side and use either hand to grab your knife. If you're on your back, laying on your knife, it's much harder to grab your knife with either hand, but especially with your off hand.

On my Shellback, I run my Esee-3 up front, behind a triple mag pouch so it’s accessible with either hand. I view knives as a great utility tool, and as such, want easy access to it. Putting it behind me increases the chances of getting cut which is a pretty bad time if the situation arises where I need to wear a plate carrier. It stays put using the Molle backer from Esee. Might have an extra one laying around if you need it.

Put the pistol on your belt. Also, ESEE 3 is pretty small.

This. Get the pistol and the pistol mags on your belt.

People say not to load up your hips to prevent fatigue, but you can train for the fatigue. You can't train away lower back pain. Spread out your weight a little. That saying about ounces and pounds still applies to load distribution, I think. Plus, with pistol mags, rifle mags, plate, and a whole pistol on your chest, how low can you get if you have to hit dirt?

Get the esee, stick it behind your mag pouch. You don't want to have an arm behind you if you're tangled up with a surprise assailant, anyway. Sure, you can grab a knife from the small of your back pretty quickly, but why create a massive opening if you don't have to?

The preceding text is entirely made up of personal opinions. Not a super tactical high speed operator. Have done a lot of training with knives, though.

Great feedback, finally.
From a drunk, a felon, and a guy who lives in an underground bunker.

Thanks guys.

Last night I was able to place the knife behind the mags on the front and tie it down to the molle
I moved my g26 holster over and now it all fits on the front.

Yeehaw !!!!

Shoulder mount the mini gun.

Two swords get crossed behind your back ensuring you can never get them out of put them back in their scabbards.

Tomahawk gets shoved in your belt frontier style.

Be cautious not to run afoul of California's concealed knives/dirks/daggers laws when choosing where to put one on your vest.
