Default Recommend Ammo for SKS

Any Ammo recommendations for a SKS (7.62.x39)? I am currently on 10 day waiting period. Looking to do some serious shooting 100 rounds first time out. Open to reload suggestions. Any good reload vendors around the Bay Area.

One hundred rounds is not serious shooting, that's just getting warmed up.

Any 7.62x39 will work, none will work any better, and none will work any worse, so just get the cheapest. Wolf, Tula, Red Army Standard, they all work the same. And you're in n. Cal so before the Los Ang people chime in, most ranges up here have no ammo restrictions. There aren't many reloaded ammo choices because those factories in Russia or Ukraine can make it cheaper than any shop in this country can make them.

You didn't mention the condition of the gun, but just as a standard disclaimer, clean the gun of any cosmoline and in particular make sure the firing pin channel is clean.

Golden Tiger is some of the best 7.62x39 ammo and priced right. I've had good luck with Wolf, but some have had issues with it. Both are bimetal jacketed with a steel case. If you want brass cased ammo that doesn't attract a magnet, Prvi is good but is more than Golden Tiger. Fiocchi is like Prvi and another good brass cased alternative.

Yes, i am ware of the Cosmo and Firing pin can cause slam fires. Rifle has been cleaned out, but I will strip it down to check for the Cosmo. And you are correct, 100 rounds is just for starters.

The SKS is not a precision rifle (although it is pretty accurate for target range needs), no need to search for good ammo, and unless you reload, just shoot the cheapest stuff you can find.

Any steel case is fine...Tula, Wolf etc.
2nd on making sure the bolt is clean and the firing pin moves freely.

Go cheap.

I bought the Chinese Type 56 last year. Didn't really fit my Curio and Relic collection, but the price was right and curiosity got the better of me.

It's now my favorite rifle to take to the range. Something about it, and I can't put my finger on it, just makes shooting it a pleasure.

I buy in bulk whatever is the cheapest round. Because 100 round days are pretty common. I'll second the orange box Tiger rounds as a great buy. But Tul and Wolf also work. Haven't had any cycling problems or jams.

Enjoy!

Any of the cheap Russian/Ukrainian steel cased.
Way way back in the day I'd use the $1000 round crates of Norinco for $100 at the shows and Turners.

7.62x39mm that's the ammo you need. Lol. It's all the same spec.

I remember the good old days when Wolf steel cased ammo was 10cents/round but now its up to 25c/rnd when on sale.
To reload the cheapest 7.62R ( .310) Cu jacketed 123 grain projectiles that I found on the web were Privi at 18c/per so after powder and primer there is zero cost saving over Wolf steel case.

I'm going to the range after work today to test, including chrono, a variety of reloads I made using cheaper plated .310 projectiles. Lower powder loads work ok in a bolt Mosin but we'll if they can cycle the SKS bolt.

If you find corrosive primed surplus, learn how to clean out the corrosive salts

Anyone get the Murry Firing pin replacement ? Looks like a great idea to eliminate the slam fires.

Exercise a lot of diligence and caution if you choose to go with Modern commercial Ukrainian or Russian steel case, berdan primed ammo.

Popped primers are an ongoing phenomenon with many of these brands.

If you use these types of ammo, check your spent casings regularly for popped primers or deep strikes. Also check them for irregular wear patterns. Popped primers will blowback corrosive salts and debris at the bolt face and into the firing pin channel. This will damage the bolt and firing pin. And buildup of debris and seize the firing pin in forward position leading to slam fires and full auto mag dumps.

See this write up (and the photos) about the popped primer phenomenon at Murray's gunsmith site:
https://murraysguns.com/popped-primer-problems/

There are also various threads on the sks forums about the popped primers

I've had the problem with Wolf, Tula, White Box, and Red Army Standard.

I've since switched to Chinese ammo and Yugo M67. I've also had great results with S&B and PPU commercial offerings.

There is also copper bullet with lead core NON magnetic attracted projectile ammo with steel cases. Can't remember which brand (one of the Wolf lines??) would have to go dig it out.

I like this site as they do show you the some of the various caliber ammo and demonstrate that it's NON magnetic in a short video.

Whoops sorry, good point!

But you can still use the site as a reference tool to check various brands.

Everyone says Golden Tiger, but I have odd fte issues with it. It may just be my old dinky rufle, but the most consistent I have used is some Wolf off label brand. I don't know what its called but sgammo sold it, its 123 grain in these little white boxes with no name. I have several thousand of GT, but found that non-label wolf to run better.

Tula ammo is ok,but is underpowered. Youll notice how much less power it has compared to other brands.

Where are you guys finding Golden Tiger? I was under the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that sgammo was the sole importer of it. And sgammo stopped sales to California? Are there other vendors carrying it now?

I am not certain, I stocked up quite a bit 2016/2017. In fact I had a big order in my cart when SG announced they wouldn't ship to CA with an c&r. I had mixed performance from GT, but I haven't really used it much, maybe 200 rds max, so I dont have the best sample. Overall, I dont know maybe it had changed and was just living on hype.

https://www.targetsportsusa.com/wolf...mj-p-3351.aspx

This whitebox Wolf is some of the most consistent ammo I have used and is better than the black/military classic wolf.

Ammo Empire and one other vendor have Golden Tiger.

A quick look through AmmoSeek shows SG Ammo (great vendor-now non California friendly) has the most in stock.

Someone recommended Golden Bear, I've used that stuff, mostly because some of the ranges here don't like steel cased. I've yet to encounter an FTF or FTE, but I've only bought 500 rounds, and fired like 200 so far.

Just buy whatever is cheapest, as long as where you shoot allows steel cased or bi-metallic (magnetic) ammo.

Just use the cheapest stuff you can find - it’s an SKS.

If you shoot corrosive, make sure you clean your rifle after each range trip.

I stocked up on it a few years ago. Now that SGAmmo won't sell to CA, there are only a couple to choose from that sell it.

Lots of great advice here. I am doing Wolf and never had a bad round. I got a Yugoslavian SKS which has been a great shooter.

I had a batch of commercial Russian ammo from the 1990's with a few sensitive primers that also caused that type of malfuntion

a gummed up firing pin or sensitive primers from a bad batch of ammo

Golden bear is steel cased.
Not the stuff I have, it's copper jacketed, and brass cased. I can take pictures if you like.

Comes in a purple box, drawn picture of a bear, says Golden Bear. Is there more than one kind?

Golden Bear uses brass-washed steel cases; Silver Bear uses zinc-washed steel cases. Wolf and Tula can use polymer or lacquer coated steel cases.

I’ve got a collection of all of it, including a case of Golden Tiger I haven’t tapped into. Got a few boxes of the Yugo M67 (mostly for the stripper clips) and those are brass.

I keep a bandolier of Silver Bear for my Mosin M44 because it just looks cool!
