Default D-14 Deer Tag validation/Countersign Locations

First time hunting D-14 this year. In the event we luck out, anyone have any successful locations in the area, preferably going down highway 38 that they have had good luck with getting their tag/game validated and countersigned? I know the obvious ranger stations, but they close pretty early and need some backups. Having fears I will pull up somewhere and they will completely freak out and have no idea what I am talking about....

Have you looked at the list of who is authorized to validate? It's pretty extensive. Lately I've just dropped it off at the meat processor and they've done it. Besides that, I have no info on your specific request.

Yeah I have, but I have heard and read the horror stories on pulling to a fire station or police station only to get blank stares, and them having no idea what to do.

Id like to just go straight to the butcher, but the one I use is closed on the weekends, and the way I read the regs is you have to go straight to get it validated/countersigned after the kill, no stopping in-between with the animal.

I've used a fire station with good luck. It was a somewhat rural one in d-16.

I hear ya...
Years ago, I'd always stop at the CalFire station in Boonville to get my tag validated. This was when you had a 'postcard' paper tag and would mail on the detached part. Always went smooth. They'd look at the tag, make sure the info matched the point count, and sign. Maybe ask for a peek at the carcass. One year I stopped and the guy asks to see the carcas... OK. Next he wants to see my hunting license...uh OK. Spends a good amount of time matching the license info to the tag. Next, he asks to see my drivers license, an he spends even more time matching that to my hunting license. I was there for about 15 minutes before he validated....
I stopped going there.

Iv'e had 2 such stories in D-5,

one a fng warden mocking me that i killed bambi at a check station and another at the fire house in pleasant valley where the firemen were so sure my kill was illegal they left with my I.D. and tag leaving me and my deer in the hot sun in a camper for like an hour till i pulled their heads out.

Fire station for me. There's a CalFire station that I pass on my way back from one of my usual spots. I've stopped there late but if it's much after 10pm, I'll just hit a fire station near my house the next day. The CalFire station up in the hills likes to turn in before 11pm if there's no emergency going on. I believe that some taxidermists also validate tags. At least the last one I used offered to validate mine. Come to think of it, I have a new neighbor who is a correctional officer & knows that I hunt -- I can ask him now, too.

Here's the list -- pretty darned broad.

Persons Authorized to Validate or Countersign Deer and Elk Tags (CCR T14-708.6(c))*

State

Fish and Game Commissioners
Employees of CDFW, including Certified Hunter Education Instructors
Employees of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection
Supervising Plant Quarantine Inspectors
Junior, Intermediate and Senior Plant Quarantine Inspectors
Federal

Employees of the Bureau of Land Management
Employees of the United States Forest Service
Employees of the United States Fish & Wildlife Service
All Uniformed Personnel of the National Park Service
Commanding Officers of any United States military installation or their designated personnel for deer taken on their reservation
Postmasters & Post Office Station or Branch Manager for deer brought to their post office
Miscellaneous

County firemen at and above the class of foreman for deer brought into their station
Judges or Justices of all state and United States courts
Notaries Public
Peace Officers (salaried and non-salaried)
Officers authorized to administer oaths
Owners, corporate officers, managers or operators of lockers or cold storage plants for deer brought to their place of business

I called and the Mill Creek/Mentone ranger station said they cant do it anymore. The guy said they are downsized to only volunteer staff, and they aret qualified for it.

Fire station is sounding like the best bet, with my backup being the CHP office in running springs. Thanks all.
