I carried my M9 in a Tactical tailor holster attached to their 45 degree panel attached the the chest of my IBA when I was deployed.

I think that set-up works for when you have an insane amount of stuff attached to yourself, as I did with the 4 (3) mag pouches, 2 large utility pouches, IFAK, compass/ grenade pouch. And or work in an environment where a hip or thigh holster doesn't work as well (vehicle with tight constraints)

granted the situation I found myself in was a combination of both of those.

With my past experience, I'm actually setting up my new rig so that my strong side is slick with the pistol holstered on the hip. Just makes the most sense and feels the most natural, also helps being a FO and not a grunt, my ability to communicate is far more important than the amount of ammo I carry on me these days.

The chest mounted holster option has its ups and downs. It evolved out of the massive increase in mobility operations over the last 10 years. Prior to that we always kept our side arms in hip or thigh holsters, but since OEF and especially OIF the average guy down range spends lots of time wearing bulky armor in crampt vehicles. Being able to quickly access a weapon is hindered in that situation, so guys started experimenting with moving it to a chest mount.

The thing is, a fully loaded pistol is relatively heavy and most holsters have a bit of an offset in the mount which can lead to this awkward balance issue when taking a holster designed to hang off the hip and MOLLE mounting to the chest. Kydex and other plastic-based holsters help with that issue, preventing any sagging or flopping around. They also tend to have good retention built in which brings up another point. You may want to think twice if you're out and about pressing the flesh with locals as a chest mounted pistol is an easy target to grab either to extract and use against you or as an anchor point to subdue you.

Throughout my daily routine in Iraq I was in various threat levels and made my gear modular enough to adjust accordingly. Within our safehouse complex we had to have a pistol at a minimum - so M9 on a thigh rig. Within the immediate neighborhood we needed our primary weapon and some protection, so I would grab the M4 and throw on a low vis IIIa vest. Rolling outside the wire required plates, so the PC would go over the vest (SAPI plates back then were in-conjunction anyway) primarily for lighter profile missions. Then for the really bad places like Mosul, the whole vest and PC would be replaced by a dedicated carrier (RAV) which also allowed twice the ammo to be carried.

So back to the chest mounted holster idea. I did most of the driving on my team and it was in a variety of vehicles both tactical and non-tactical, each with its own limitations of weapon stowage and portability. The chest mounted holster was great because there was quick, easy access to my pistol. But once I was out of the vehicle I hated having the pistol on my chest. I also had this two week phase of freaking out every now and then while on foot, taking a knee and realizing there wasn't a pistol on my hip.

Ultimately what worked best for me was to stick with the thigh holster but whenever in the vehicle I would stow the pistol in the RAV cumberbund or a loose area behind a mag pouch on the PC. This of course required a bit of training to holster the pistol quickly while un-assing the vehicle, but that was easy. I did exactly that for the better part of a year with the only change being that watching a trusted friend have an AD on a holstered pistol made me not want my dick shot off, so I would run it initially unchambered.

I have an Eagle Rhodesian Recon Vest, and I'm looking at something like the ATS War Belt.

Do you guys who have both use the suspenders from the belt up under the vest, or is there a decent way you attach the belt to the vest itself?

All this talk made me & my wife go for a run in our carriers...I wore my APC with SAPI's, and she wore an IBA with soft armor only.

took it easy, but still went 1.5 miles!

Suspenders. That way you can adjust the vest without having to adjust the belt also. In addition you can run the belt alone without the vest. Better to keep those pieces independent from each other.

For people that may not be aware, the reverse flag (stars on the right) is for wear on your right shoulder, otherwise use the patch with the star field on the left.

anyone have carriers that can fit larger plates but run smaller plates?
I have a carrier that fits up to 10x13 but my plate is 10x12 so it sits low.
I was told to put a sewing tack, but that would require to sew in the rig therefore not allowing to remove the plate.

That's actually a very important and overlooked issue - fitting the plates properly. I've seen a lot of guys wearing their gear with their plates sagging over their guts or just out of alignment. They're designed to be centered, otherwise you're missing out on some vital protection. Some rigs have really good plate retention, while others are essentially a pocket for a specific/common plate dimension. As suggested above, heavy duty velcro can help with that. Try sewing two strips of pile inside the pouch to attach a velcro strap across the bottom of the plate to hold it snug.

I thought it would be velcro, after thinking for a while i was going to go with that.
the carrier i have has a inside fuzzy patch of velcro, just need to get some of the sticker soon.

Exactly, Brando brings up a great point, people more knowledgeable than I in this have said that a good reference for sizing plates and proper placement is nipple to nipple and roughly 1/2 to 1 inch above the bottom of the clavicle notch (top of the breast bone to 1 to 1 and 1/2 inches above the belly button. While standing upright, the back plate should be situated the same as the front, as far as area covered.

The thinking is, you are providing as much protection as possible without impeding mobility as much. You can survive a gut shot much longer without medical treatment than you can a shot to the chest cavity in general (direct hit to the heart and or aortic artery being pretty much a DRT hit.

Basically if you can touch your chin to your chest while wearing the vest then your plate is too low and you need to raise it up so that your chin will rest on the plate instead.

Also that is a general guide, you want the biggest plate possible that doesn't impede mobility, for example, I run Medium ESAPIs in my IBA. It sucks as far as plate placement, way to low on me, however I'm thinking when I buy my own plates I'll run a medium up front and a large in the back, need to try it out on some issued plates before I drop the coin on my own though.

Nav195,

do you like the shoulder pads on the APC? I've used mine now about 5 times at the range, and do not like how much they rub on my neck. I've since take them off and the PC is still just as comfortable as before.

Maybe it's because I run a very minimal rig, just like you. Actually, its setup exactly like yours except my mag carriers are BFG.

Tom
I have noticed the shoulder pads are pretty abrasive to the neck. I still run them. Ive worn just a t-shirt underneath and once I started running the gun it doesn't really bother me. It does help though when I wear a polo or something with a caller. I think the shoulder pads design was to keep a low profile while keeping padding. They are low but wide. It would probably help if my traps were bigger like the hulk or something. Overall it hasn't bothered me enough to take them off yet. I'll keep running them. They should break in softer.

I love it. Works great for what I use it for. I wanted something low-pro but adaptable and this really fit the bill.

I just picked up a Condor copy of the Eagle CIRAS. I didn't want to spend $400-600 dollars until I at least tried out a basic set up. I'll post pics later of my glorified AirSoft rig.

I just use one of the ESAPIs in there with one piece of cummerbund soft armor behind it, The plates are size small so it covers most of it but it's the best I can do with what I have for now. The bigger pieces of soft armor don't fit in the mesh pocket in the RRV.
