Online scam with a twist. Details and questions inside
I have not logged into this forum in years. Now am I am back with a story and a question.
Long story short, I have done online dating for a while. Seen some weird things happen. Been scammed out of money. My BS detector is very keen. New local user pops up. I we exchange some rated G messages and exchange phone number. We exchange a number of g rated text messages. Things this user does that makes me suspect scam. Won’t talk in the phone Won’t do a video call Won’t meet in person. Wants money without meeting in person User wants me to send them money via Zelle or Venmo so they can go grocery shopping. I say I will only meet you in person. User refused to meet in person but send s me a picture of a Drivers lisncse, Which I have never had happen before. My curious peaks as this address is 3 miles away. I go to the address and Knock on the door. Man comes out old enough to be her dad. I ask if the user is lives there. Man says yes, which was a shocker for me. I Leave. I have enough information to start an investigation, I think. I am curious if this person has scammed money out of people. Would a prosecutor in Santa Clara county prosecute something like this. Would a police department devote resources to build this kind of case? |

Probably a younger girl looking for a sugar daddy or money from desperate dudes. Meeting women online can be rough... good luck

I suggest you sent a letter to "Daddy" describing this so he knows what might be going on unless he is in on it.

An investigation for what exactly? From what you have described I don't see a crime. Someone asked you for money, that happens every day, charities, the NRA, and politicians constantly ask for money. There is nothing illegal about asking for money. The crime comes when you give them money expecting something in return that you don't get, or are you leaving that part out to not incriminate yourself? Sorry for being blunt but those are the questions that are going to come up.

What is the investigation for? No one is forcing you to send any money or continue the relationship, everything is voluntary.

Last week, I was driving to Lowe’s hardware.
I stopped at a light, and a person came up to my vehicle and asked me to give them money. Would local LEOs initiate an investigation?

I would never, ever try to hook up with a woman through the internet. What's wrong with you?

bro, when they start asking for money you cut off communication and you defiantly don't go to a random address knocking on doors.

Until you can establish that the person you are communicating with is the person on the DL, and that they are trying to commit a crime, you have nothing. I'm not even a cop yet I know that. And simply asking for money to spend, is not a crime. |

So youve been scammed before...
Even if you met face to face to give this person money WHY! Why would dating/ trying to date someone ever have an exchange of cash. Yes maybe you pay for dinner or get her something but I have never given a girl money that I just met..... As a matter of fact even to this day I dont give my wife money unless its like some small amount in my wallet and she needs the cash. |

If you want to do the online dating thing, fine. More power to you. Seems kind of a pain in the A to meet people that way, but whatever works for you.
However, once your BS detector is activated then stop, cut off ties, and move on. Your goal, I’m assuming is to meet someone online for a friendly and/or romantic connection. If something comes up that stands in front of that goal then stop going in that direction. |

Quick story actually about my sister, she met, married and had kids with a guy she met online, turned out (dumb *** sister didn't check his background cuz she was blinded by love..) he had a criminal history that would make pretty much everyone cringe. Now her dumb *** is literally taking care of this bum buying his health insurance paying for his food etc etc.

Op disappeared 1 day after this thread was made.
Speculations: -op went back to the home and something happened. -op sought refunds and something happened. -lost enough money to quit the internet. or -is being scammed by others (heard scammers give info to each other to whom are easy targets) |

Sounds to me like he would do better just buying it rather than trying to invest in it LOL

Would a prosecutor be interested?
What you just explained is a person asked you for money. Asking someone for money isn’t illegal. So, basically, you’ve described a non-criminal act where you suffered a zero dollar loss. You need to provide a better articulation of something criminal taking place. Right now there is nothing to go on. Online scams are a dime a dozen and I’m not even sure this was a scam... |
