Default Ammo per range trip?

How much ammunition do you go through each time you visit the range?

As a beginner, I put about 200 rounds through two 9mm pistols. Given the scarcity of ammunition right now, I’m loathe to shoot more, even though I know I would love to spend more time at the range.

Do you typically go through drills? I’m visiting an indoor on weekdays when I’ve scheduled myself a little free time, and I have been going every two weeks. So I’m not allowed to try any drills using a holster or moving around. So I have been focusing on my fundamentals. I would love to go to outdoor ranges more often, but it’s hard to get back to the office and be presentable afterwards.

My last trip, yesterday, was 20 rounds of 9 mm and probably 100 rounds of 22. Usually is go through 50 rounds of 9 per trip but I forgot my holster, so I skipped the holster drills. I try to go every week, usually twice per week.

Probly 400 rounds or so, different calibers. Any less ammo or time and I feel like trip was a waste.

I do beween 300 and 400 rounds. As stated above, mainly because any less seems like a waste of a trip. I drive approx 60+ miles each way to my spot, sometimes further if I find it crowded, about an additional 30 miles.

I limit myself to 80~100 rifle caliber rounds and 50~100 for handgun caliber (.38/.45acp/44mag) depending on what I take. Usually at least 200 for 22lr.

Absolutely no spray and pray, only occasional double taps. Mostly I drill on presentation, grip, stance, sight alignment, and trigger discipline. You'd be surprised just how long 400 rounds last when you slow down and concentrate on the fundamentals.

If primers weren't so hard to find I'd double my centerfire quantities, but it is what it is.

I’m fortunate to be 30 mins away from 2 indoor and one outdoor range. I still can’t make it more often than every other week, however.

I frequently try 2-3 shot groups because I want to be able to be more capable for home defense situations, but I really like the idea of really making every shot count by focusing on fundamentals.

I do think getting a .22 pistol and a rifle for plinking will help me.

I’m also looking into airsoft to practice at home. Even if it has to be the middle of the night, when I finally have a bit of time. Hopefully something very quiet so the neighbors don’t get upset.

It really depends how much you have on hand. If you have a few thousand stashed away, or whatever your number is. Then shoot what you have on top of that. So 2,000 rounds stored. If you guy buy 600 rounds, shoot that. This is just how I do it. When ammo was plentiful I’d shoot 400 rounds of 9mm, 500 of .22lr and 250 of .223/5.56 a week.

50 to 100 rounds for handguns and 40 to 100 rounds for rifle depending on the mood.

pre-covid: until you get tired of shooting.

Those are about my numbers too. I try to retrieve the brass but don't get it all.

Sometimes I'll use more if zeroing a semiauto rifle or if it's windy at the range.

when the ammo gets low, I switch to my old trusty WW2 bolt action rifles and reloaded ammo

no ammo hogs that burn up ammo in a short time, I use my surplus bolt actions and take my time and only fire 20 - 30 rds of ammo

and maybe one box of 9mm

I could shoot a lot more but that would use up my supplies too quickly, I conserve ammo and make it last

sometimes I shoot a bolt action .22 rifle with a scope

I really have to get a .22lr pistol. I know it doesn’t always handle ammo well, but I want to get a Walther P22 because I have a PPQ. Just hoping some of the practice is still applicable. Otherwise, I guess a Browning Buckmark or, if I can find the off-roster at an affordable price, a Ruger Mark IV.

Get a Buckmark for sure. The Walther will be ammo picky, in times like these, we can’t really be ammo picky. The mark iv is a great pistol for how it breaks down, but its a pretty rare piece to find in CA. More so than the guns being flipped for profit daily. Smith and wesson shield, sig 365, glock gen 5 etc.

Yeah, I just don’t like the idea of needing tools just to field strip the gun. Isn’t .22lr a very dirty round? I’m a bit...fastidious about cleaning my firearms.

22 is dirty, but doesn't really take any extra effort to clean. Just a little more dirt on the rag when you finish.

You will probably put more rounds downrange with a 22, so that may add to it seeming like it is dirtier.

200-250 for two 9mm pistols
100 for .45 ACP
50 for .357/.38

Usually take 2-3 firearms per range trip; those are my estimates.

200-300 is typical for me. .260, 30/06, 6.5, 7x55 - it depends on which rifles I decide to bring out to play.

I reload, so it is not a big issue for me.

I reload too, but I hate to leave my once fired brass at the range. Picking it up is awkward.

I have a brass catcher for my semi-autos, and it’s a non-issue for my bolt guns. That being said, I have no issues picking up my stray brass and you shouldn’t either. It’s far too expensive and valuable.

If by awkward you mean physically, you can get one of those mechanical collectors to pick it up if it is uncomfortable.

I reload as well and try to pick up all of my brass. I have one of those inexpensive long-handled grabby tool things. It is a great back saver. it still seems I only come home with about 60-70% of the brass I left with.

My guns chuck brass everywhere.

Usually 300-400 rounds per range trip. Pistol, rifle, rimfire, shotgun.

I'm curious to what tool you use to recover brass?

Most of my recent range trips have been with new shooters.

So 200 round of Centerfire and a carton of 22

It’s all about
Safe
Fun
Teaching at their speed.

If I go with other shooters, 200-400 handgun
Another 200 rifle

Depends on what I'm shooting

Pistol range trips I usually avg 250 rounds (9mm, 45 maybe some 357)

Long range rifle days (500+ yards): 150 rounds

Short range Rifle days (50-100 yards): 200 rounds

200 would be a lot for me. Then again, I'm shooting 7rd. 1911 mags the whole time, too.

This is making me want more calibers, especially a .22lr pistol for my wife and kids to learn! Then a 10/22, mini-14 (I just like old school looks for rifles), a .45 1911, and finally, shotguns.

I promised myself I would wait at least 6 months before making another purchase. But getting a .22 is practically required, right? It doesn’t even count.

If I’m practicing shotgun I do 4-5 rounds of single trap (100-125 shot shells) or if it’s 9mm pistol or .223 rifle I do about 100-200 rounds.

I work in dry firing in between live rounds while I’m there, and only bring 1 gun to practice with, and just try to go a few times a week.

For Carry gun day.200-250 for two 9mm pistols
100 for .45 ACP

When its Rifle day, Its roughly 200-300 rounds of 5.56.

When it's "i'm shooting to much of this ammo" day,

It's .22LR day. Pistols and Rifles....

Plinking is fun!!

Every 2-weeks, if it is for practice/drills -

50-rds of .22LR
100-rds of 9mm

Ammo shortage or not - I make each round count... It makes you responsible for every shot downrange.

But, if I am just having fun?

Yeah - could easily hit 300-rds in various ammo (9, 45, 223)...
