I was going to keep this since ill never be able to get another one, but I'm moving to Texas soon and i will never really do anything with it but keep it in the safe I'm not a collector of this level..
125th anniversary edition this is #5 of 50. class A engraving from the S&W shop REAL Ivory grips, come with the presentation box a 125 years of S&W gun history book supposed to be signed by Jinx but i have not opened it and a S&W coin a friend in Florida made me a great offer but he's having trouble coming up with the cash, I'm thinking of offering it on CG but i have not found any history of sales to give me an idea how much to ask. if anyones has info on a resent sale please share, thanks JD

From the SW Forum. Don't believe they are ivory grips. This should give you a starting point.

Post 7 in your link shows a sales brochure that says the 50 have "Genuine ivory stocks".

You might give these guys a call...They are an auction house in So Calif and deal with a lot of rare guns and estate sales.

I wouldn't use LSB all they do is throw it on gun auction.com which you could do yourself. If going auction route use a place that puts out catalogs, displays at shows, has a live auction in conjunction with Proxibid and absentee and telephone bidders.

That would be too soon to get it in I would consider talking to Orange Coast Auctions.

Little johns and orange coast auctions (both in southern ca/orange county) will treat you right.

Carol (OCC) has a super nice catalog they will put it in thats all high definition pictures and write up about the gun.

Both auctions use proxibid to let anyone from around the country view it online for several weeks, they have a viewing where its in a glass counter to check it out prior so it will get exposure, and also will have a live auction where people, along with the rest of the US whoever is viewing the auction online can bid.

I stand corrected. I can't for the likes of me figure out where I thought I saw that (not ivory) in the SW thread.

Yes. There is a federal ban on selling Elephant Ivory but CA law basically bans everything with very few exceptions. $50000 fine per item sold. Last year I called DFG for an old guy who wanted to sell his 1911 with real ivory grips dating to the 1920's. The answer was, "no way."

I asked if he could advertise them for sale on Gunbroker for sale outside CA. The answer was, "No that is offering them for sale in CA." He went on to say it hadn't been tested in court but do you really want to have your gun tied up in impound for years and spend $$$ in legal fees to find out if you were right?

If the OP is moving to TX I'd keep the gun and sell it there.

I didn't even think that there was any exceptions.

Hell, they even banned stuff like Mastodon ivory. Because you know we need to make sure no one needlessly hurts a Mastodon just to get it's ivory.

Honestly, if this was my S&W, I would keep it. Rarity aside, it a beautiful piece of gun making art. It's value will only increase if kept in pristine condition.

I didn't say that you didn't.

It was a commentary on the fact that the laws are so out there that they need to protect Mastodons. Implying that if they would do that how could they possibly write in exemptions.

Im curious if you could sell the frame and give the grip stocks away to your new friend. You have to remove them as part of the ppt transfer anyway, right?

Just mentioned it since you wrote that you didn't know there were exemptions. I wasn't sure if you had read through the thread or just responding to the OP. Just trying to be helpful.

standard catalog of S&W says

deluxe edition (fifty units) ivory stocks w/nickel plated S&W
medallion

custom deluxe edition (two units) genuine ivory stocks w/nickel plated S&W medallions

good idea to contact S&W
