Default Modestly Priced TSA Compliant Shotgun Case

I have a 28" Winchester 101 O/U (new, Belgian production) which I like quite a bit. It did not come with any case. I need to fly with it next month.

I need a case which (i) complies with TSA regulations; (ii) looks decent; and (iii) doesn't cost too much. Like to keep it under $100. Prefer a take down case, I don't want it to be too long / large overall. Don't want to project too much of a "tactical" "operator" image, going more for "a day at the shooting club" look.

Any suggestions?

No, no, no. That case is a recipe for a broken shotgun. You need a breakdown case to eliminate the leverage of a long gun. Never, ever, travel with or ship a break action gun fully assembled. If you have time, look for a used aluminum or plastic breakdown case on Craigslist, eBay, Gunbroker, etc. Check with CDNN and Jeff's Outfitters. SKB made some stupendously good cases that were not too expensive. They are out there, but you'll have to look.

Looks like a pretty good value, but over budget.

Thanks, Ducky. Yeah, I was looking for a compact case to carry it broken down. I think you have embedded the wrong link, that is the same case zettix linked to.

Here are some I am thinking about. Cheap:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P3YSO6/...v_ov_lig_dp_it

Mid-range:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7ZMKZF...v_ov_lig_dp_it

Over budget:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086DVLQ15...v_ov_lig_dp_it

I am sort of undecided whether to just get the minimum for this trip, or spend a bit more and get something to use all the time. I will look out for the others you mentioned.

I have a Beretta factory takedown case I presume is TSA. Combo lock. An extra when I got a 2 barrel case. I could let it go within your budget.

There's some econo Negrini cases on Fleabay, but still more than your budget.

JagerDog, pm'ed you. Those Negrini cases are the bomb! But yeah, a little pricey, even on eBay.

Yeah, the more I think about this the more I think I need to up my budget. If you watch out the window at the airport, you can see the way baggage handlers sling the bags around. Its pretty scary. I think I am now leaning towards this one from Pelican for $150:

https://www.amazon.com/Vault-700-Rif...%2C242&sr=8-11

Description says it has five layers of foam. Anyone have one of these? I assume at least one of those layers is pluck and pull, right? Description doesn't say that.

If anyone has any better ides with the new higher budget, I would be interested, but Pelican seems like a safe bet.

Whatever case you get make sure when locked cannot be opened enough to slide hand in. I missed a flight because tsa said case not secure enough. Went big 5 and bought sturdier case with 4 locking points.

Get a "Pelican" style case ! They are the strongest and are water proof.

These cases can take being banged around and still protect the inside.

I got a Two Gun Case from Cabela's a couple of years ago for $149. You could literally throw it out of a pick up truck and the contents would be unharmed.

The Foam interior can be configured any way you want to hold your gun

Here's one for $150 https://www.pelican.com/us/en/produc...ase/vault/v700
There is also enough room for all your accessories for that gun .

In all my Shotgun Cases for my good guns, I keep all accessories, Choke Tubes a Bore Snake Lubricants and Tools in the case so they are always there when I get to my shooting destination. I store all these guns full time in their cases with a Desiccant Bag to suck up moisture. That way they avoid handling dings and dents and safe rash.

Your gun is worth around $2000 maybe more? $150 for a case to keep it in is not asking too much.

A bit over your budget, but will last a lifetime. I have gone all over the world with Pelican cases and my firearms have been protected from uncaring airline workers.

If you feel comfortable with throwing the case to the ground from the bed of a pickup truck then it is good enough.

This is Pelican 1700, same size as what is linked above.

That's some pretty firearms right there! If I can ask, what chamberings?

And another vote for Pelican. And if you don't get a fitted case, consider wrapping each gun half in a terrycloth towel, just in case things shift in the case when Igor and Groc, the baggage handlers, do their best.

Any case that is lockable will be TSA compliant. Would you trust anything that TSA even has a their name or approves?

Get an case you like! Plenty of options.

Pelican, SKB, etc

Haha. Yeah, I think it only means "no soft cases, even if they lock." But what I really need to worry about are the monkeys who handle the luggage.

I think I am going with the Pelican that I linked to above, but there are a few others that look good, like Eylar. If anyone has any ideas less than $150, I could still go with something other than Pelican. Looking for the wisdom of my fellow CalGunners.

That Pelican V700 is the ticket! The 5 Layers of protective foam give you the ability to have a couple different case configurations, with just 1 case. The foam is not pickable. Better yet, you can cut it to be an exact fit, for your needs. You can cut it with a hot knife, electric knife, scissors, or knife. Use the piece with your cut out as the center piece, and you have 2 protective layers on top & bottom.

The middle and bottom ones look good, the first one looks sketchy. Personally, I'd go for a Pelican style case because those are tried and true..... I trust my expensive guns will arrive unharmed. Also - buy a good case that you can use all the time, shopping for an el-ceapo one time use case is setting yourself up for disaster. Just how much is the gun worth to you?

Just saw this response...... you're on the right track with this case. A bit over your budget, but your gun(s) will arrive safe and undamaged. Buy it or one like it, you won't be sorry.

You do not want to go with any of the cheap cases that have been posted. I'm not saying you have to go with a Pelican but spend a little money and get a decent case that will stand up to the baggage monkeys and that will last.

Also, don't spend money for foam. Buy a case without the foam and then find a soft case that will fit inside the hard case. They don't cost much more than a lot of foam and this way you can stash the heavy bulky case at the hotel and just use the soft case once you get to your destination. A soft case will also make the hard case usable for multiple rifles...and you don't have to screw with cutting foam.

I disagree. A soft case will not provide protection against the hard case being thrown around in that it will move around in the hard case. So, you are taking chances.

Now, for the Pelican 1700 pictured above I bought it without foam and then bought a 3 piece military grade foam from eBay.

Then I read reviews, get educated on the product, and often realize that I should buy something better and spend a bit more. That was what happened with the case. After shopping around and reading reviews, I went with the Pelican Vault 700. With a $10 off $75 coupon from Cabela's, free shipping, some discounted gift cards from Raise, and 9% from Active Junky, I was able to get it delivered for about $117, tax included. Well worth it.

I understand this is a low-end offering from Vault, but OMG it looks tough to me. Weighs a ton (17 pounds) empty. I am sure it will do the job.

It was harder to do neat job cutting foam with an electric knife than i expected, but I think it didn't come out too bad for a first effort. I know that if I don't post pics it didn't happen so here it is with the foam cut and some goodies loaded for my trip:

Pelican Case.jpg

I had some trouble finding locks to fit. First I tried some that I had on-hand, with one inch shackle. They were too short. Then I ordered some long shackle padlocks from Amazon. They had 2.5 inch shackles. This was too long. Finally found my Goldilocks, just right, size. These Master locks with 1.5" shackles and were $14 for three:

Many thanks to all for the helpful suggestions on here!

I am kind of surprised someone with a $1,000 shotgun wants to spend less than $100 for a case which a bunch of football humping monkeys will toss around harshly and on purpose.

Try to keep up. Have you been hanging out in the back with the football humping monkeys again?

If you buy a hard shell case with no foam, you can make your own custom insert by wrapping the gun components in plastic kitchen wrap and then blowing insulation foam around the components (carefully, being aware that the foam expands). When the foam has cured, pull the parts and unwrap them. Trim the foam so that the case closes nicely. You'll have a case with zero internal shifting and it will be nearly crushproof. Good way to recycle old cases, and the best way to ship guns.

Really cool idea, Ducky's Dad, thanks for sharing that. I have some plastic boxes laying around that could be gun cases using this method. Do you have any pictures of cases you have made this way? You know the rule around here: pics or it didn't happen!

Sorry for the thread drift, but can anyone tell me if it is OK to fly with EMPTY mags in the handguns? Is it going to cause extra angst at check-in? I am trying to avoid cutting any more slots in the foam, and thinking I could just insert an empty mag in each handgun, only bring one mag for each gun, and I'm done. Am I asking for trouble?

I have flown quite a bit with empty magazines in the handguns. Never had an issue. Also, it is not the check-in person's job to check to make sure they are not loaded. After all, you are signing an affidavit to there not being any live ammo in the firearm.

TSA now, they will check if they need to verify.

I wonder if Alec Baldwin had a signed affidavit from his Assistant Director that the gun wasn't loaded, if that would get him off his impending "Negligent Homicide" charge?

Maybe the movies should check to verify? Good to hear you got a decent case, but you need more than one magazine for every handgun. 4ea. is the minimum

My .02 here.
