Default M1014 fixed choke?

I am told by Benelli customer service that the limited edition M1014 comes with a fixed modified choke. Does this mean I cannot shoot slugs, unless I change the barrel?

Benelli's manual/literature doesn't recommend slugs through a modified choke.

However, with my internet research, many folks have shot rifled/Foster type slugs through barrels with modified chokes with zero problems.

Personally, I don't own any shotguns with modified chokes to try it otherwise I would try it, but I cannot give first-hand knowledge, sorry.

The ribs on a "Rifled Slug" are not there to "spin stabilize" the slug. They are there to collapse as the slug goes thru a choke. IE: Swaging Down to a smaller size..

Cylinder bore is .730. Modified Choke is .710 so that is .010 crush on each side which is not a problem. The lead is pushed into the areas between the ribs on the slug which serves to keep pressures in the safe zone.

This can't happen on a solid slug as there is no place to the lead to go, but to make the slug longer. This takes much more pressure to accomplish than with the ribs and results in a pressure spike that the gun can't take. Don't shoot solid slugs in your choked barrel but they still can be fired in a Cylinder Bore Barrel.

That said the reason why the gun has a Modified Choke in the barrel is so that it will pattern 00 Buckshot tighter and increase the effective range of the gun.

In a combat scenario the gun would use buckshot as the primary load and you would do a Select Slug Changeover when a more distant target presented itself.

It should be noted that the gun comes with Ghost Ring Rifle Sights. That should tell you something.

Seen plenty of these guns at Front Sight, no problems with shooting those slugs thru that barrel, however that doesn't mean you can shoot any slug thru it. There are slugs that don't have collapsible ribs and are essentially solid. They shouldn't be used.

Go here and read up on the Brenneke Slug. Wilhelm Brenneke invented it in 1898 specifically for the purpose of shooting thru a choked barrel.

hope this clears up your quandary.
