I would get the updated certificate and submit it to permitium.

I would get the updated certificate and upload it to permitium. I had a similar issue with a serial number, though it was pre-issue. I had to get the serial number corrected and uploaded to permitium.

Yup, you're exactly right. They had me get another cert and I had to re-upload it to permitium and they deleted the incorrect one.

I understand that for new applications, one of the 3 character references has to be from a co-worker. Is this accurate?

Hope not! I haven't had a co-worker in over 11 years!

There aren't many of my coworkers that I would want to let know that I have firearms, let alone a CCW!

SDSO now only allows 2 modifications to a permit in a 2 year period.

Has anyone done their renewal lately? If so, how long did it take? Mine expires on 3/22 and it’s still “assigning to processor shortly.”

Did you have to have references as well as the 8-hour class?

Just the 8-hour class & qualifying? That won't be so bad.

I didn't have to do the 8 hour class, I didn't need the 3 references. I just had to qualify.

Talked to someone from licensing yesterday and it looks like they’re beyond 45 days for renewal. I’m at 45 days today. Sucks.

I'm interested in hearing from folks who have recently applied for their first time or are going through a renewal and have had their references contacted. Is SD Sheriff actually contacting references? And if so, how many of your references did they contact and what did they ask them?

My renewal didn?t require references. However I?m on day 50 of my renewal application being ?processed.?

A few people I spoke to had their renewal in 3-4 weeks.

Chiming in as I just submitted my renewal package today. Mine expires May 13. Will post any progress I as I get it.

This is my third renewal. Permitium process was pretty easy. No references required. Took about an hour to complete and that included scanning in all the docs - CDL, Proof of Reidency (x2), and Training Cert. Had all other relevant info from copies of previous renewals. So basically all the same answers I gave that got me approved last go around.

Timer has started.....

Got an email from the licensing supervisor today that read:

Quote:
Good Morning,

Your request for the renewal of your CCW permit has been received. You will receive your license in the mail in 3-4 weeks if all supporting documents are included with your application.

IF your application does not include the following documents your submission will be considered incomplete and will NOT been assigned to staff:

Two proofs of residency
Driver's license
8-hour safety certificate

Once all documents have been received, your application can be processed. If you have questions or there are ANY changes to your application, please notify our office via email at ccw@sdsheriff.org.

Sincerely,

One thing I did notice when I reviewed the electronic pdf copy of my application is that there is a Section 3 - Character References. I don't recall seeing that when I completed the application. The box shows an entry NONE. It must not be mandatory since the system allowed me to complete and submit the form without entering any references.

Helmut - Have you logged back into Permitium to check the status? It should be assigned to a processor. I know when I first applied I had a couple direct phone conversations with my processor. She phone me with questions that regarded my "good cause" at them time. Maybe your processor can be contacted directly (email or phone) to see what is up with yours?

Yeah I?ve been in contact someone. He just said ?bare with us? for a bit as I?m still in the background portion of my application.

My Permitium just says ?assigning to processor shortly.?

Well - that was quick.

Submitted the online application on April 1.

I got notification 7:00AM this morning of approval by:

Phone message
Text Message
e-mail

I checked permitium this morning:

Now I guess it is just wait for it to come in the mail.

*Edit: After thinking about this for a bit, I wonder if the fact that I have a current COE and FFL03 had any bearing on the quick turnaround. I did not mention that in my application but if it came up on the background check it may have been an easy dedision since the state of CA has already vetted me. That and this is my third renewal. Just a thought....

Any word on yours Helmut? Sorry yours seems to have taken a different route.

Wow. That was quick. Congrats. Lol

No word on mine. I also have an 03FFL and COE. I did notice on my application ?notes? that there was an officer signed and witness on my application on 3/25. No idea if that has any bearing on status.

So final post on my renewal.

Recieved my card in the mail today. Yes, plastic card. No paper nonsense. It is similar to the yellow top Permitium card we gat last go around with the official paper document.

So my timeline is this.
  • March 25 - Take Renewal Class
  • April 1 - Complete online application 43 days prior to expiration
  • April 2 - Received email confirmation of receipt of application
  • April 4 - Received emai, phone call, text that application has been approved
  • April 6 - Received permit in mail

The only down side to the speedy approval is that my previous expiration date was May 13. It is now April 4 - the date of approval. So I end up losing about 40 days in the overlap. 42 if you count the two days it took to mail the card to me.

I've never been able to find an answer on why it has to be this way. Why can't they simply renew you for your actual expiration date so you don't lose any time?

If this was a normal state where the permit was good for FIVE years instead of two...and it wasn't so g'damn expensive every two Eff'ing years...I wouldn't complain. This seems like theft to me.

So a buddy of mine moved from RivCo to SDCo. He turned in his RivCo CCW and applied for the SD CCW last saturday. His initial appt date is June of 2025. What the hell.

San Diego is much slower. Their back log is about 1 yr and change. Interviews are only held on Mondays. Plus they are a tad bit stricter the RVC. They are nice folks but are over worked and hundreds of folks are applying.

Learning lesson here. If you have your CA CCW, never move from the county you got it from lol. Sorry to hear about your buddy not being able to legally be armed in SD Co for the next 14 months.

Have him check back frequently. People cancel appointments and folks have had good luck improving their initial dates. But you have to be diligent about it. Nobody is happy about this and it's a clear violation of the COTUS. But it is what it is until the lawsuits happen.
