Yes very much so. Im not sure of the different stock options for a yugo ak but the stock one isnt bad. Maybe just something a little better quality. And no I plan to shoot it this weekend. The allen screw on the optic came stripped so I could barely get it tightened all the way. Hopefully it holds or ill have to send it back.

This thread should just be called "five-seven (and technique) are awesome."

Five sev - it looks like you're trending towards side mounts and away from ultimaks as this 2+yr thread moves forward. Is that correct, and is there a reason for it, or are your builds just turning out that way?

Any cutting edge suggestions for my saiga build? I've Just done the back end conversion with vltor/ctr/hogue pg/trigger job so far, http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=911364

I'd rather try a few diff options than break the bank on eotechs and the like so money is a factor. Cant decide between forward mounted red dot, side mounted red dot, side mounted scope. Versatility is good. Ultimaks are so damned popular, but theyre like 4+ years old so maybe those (like you) with the experience are trending back towards side rails for mounting the things you need, when you need them? I also like the idea of putting rails on the stock handguard for AFG and possibly 9'oclock light (because nothing wrong with a long, smooth handguard), but am also thinking about getting one of those strike industries keymod rails for 70ish bucks for just the back part, no handguard retainer required (i think).

Wish I had more parts to play with! I researched the hell out of the things I've bought so far and couldn't be happier with them (other than stupid fkin bullet button, lmao)

Thanks but, I do like modern AK and many updates/mods have their own advantages. + someone has to keep up with it.

I have 3 AK's with Ultimak and in most cases I prefer them over side mount as they make the lightest possible platform for red dot/reflex sight, especially with QD Aimpoint micro.

Looks good and my suggestion is to try a few different stocks/grips etc and see what feels/points the best. Most of them will have superior handling to traditional wood/polymer but some will stand out better. At the end it's what suits you best (as we are all different) and don't cheap out to much if it's your only tactical rifle/platform.

I have a feeling that eventually you'll try out more than a few before you decide on the one.

Ultimak is over 12 +/- years old I believe and it's been proven to be very reliable and one if not the best forward mounted optic mount setup. Its being that good that made it last so long as I've seen many others come & go.
Side mounts are good and have their own place but Ultimak is hard to beat.

Strike industries is a good hand guard but it's not as durable imo as Ultimak lower but I haven't had to much experience with it so I can't state that for certain, again just my opinion.
On the top of this page, the 5.45 Saiga has Chaos AK handguard, it does not require any modification/installation to retaining bracket as it was made for stock Saiga + it works very well with Ultimak.

Word of advise on Midwest Industries side mount and Saigas.
I've tested few 30mm single side mount rings, and a few side mounted rails. All of them sit a little bit to the right so co-witnessing is not ideal with those low profile mounts. I think they haven't tested a single unit on Saiga before production, all measurements and testing was done on WASR's or something else.
If you prefer side mount, hands down RS is the best, low profile, lightweight, very durable, easy adjustment/clamp and just an awesome mount, Yes it will cost you nearly double but it's so worth it. There's also many options etc.

Built it in 2012 those parts are not around any more really. I had a guy in oregon populate and profile the barrel for me. And I found a fake can to cover the barrel on gun broker. The ribbed Krink hand guards I picked up on EBay for $30...they are also kvar.

It tosses spent cases 25-30 feet

Yea, at the time I had sold all my 5.45 stuff and I have **** tons of 7.62 stuff so I decided to build it in 7.62. It's a fun gun and a head turner at the range. Still don't have the FSB muzzle device pin and spring yet. They never seem to be instock any were.

On a side note, I put one of the redstar adjustable triggers in my 5.45 sagia conversion. It's super sweet, but won't function correctly with sagia bolt hold open. The bolt hold open compresses the hammer spring on the right side, and the trigger does not have a true tail on the right side. It has flat lug were you can adjust the safety engagement via a set screw. The hammer spring wants to jump that lug, and gets caught between the side of the trigger and the bolt hold open device, and binds the trigger just enough to cause it to not reset.

Remove the bolt hold back and it works perfectly with a nice factory set 4.5lb pull. So I went with a krebs safety to hold my bolt open.

Default Birthday blasting with the AK

My plan was to fine tune the zero on my Aimpoint Micro T-1.

The little guy on top was hit with 220 gr. subsonic 7.62x39... the big head was hit with 124 gr. supersonic Golden Tiger.
All of it went through an M14 suppressor. The old Aimpoint Micro T-1 has a 4 MOA dot.
