Default Favorite range in SoCal?

Yes I know this thread might be more appropriate in general discussion, but a similar question was asked there recently with little response. I figured the bolt/lever crowd may be able to provide a little more knowledge.

Looking for a range in or within 50 miles of Orange county.
Planing to visit midweek for most of the day ideally at a relatively uncrowded facility.
I'd like to do some shooting at 50-400 yards.
Not really looking to become a range member at this point.

Does your favorite SoCal range fit this description?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Mike Raahauge Shooting*Enterprises | 100 yards

Lytle Creek (Northwest of Fontana)

Pala*Shooting*Range | 887 yards

Some of these would be beyond 50 miles but not too much. I think everything else would be much further.

Angeles Shooting Ranges.
I haven't been to Piru, it looks nice, but it's a far drive from me.

Angeles and Piru are over 60 miles from OC. Piru, perhaps 75 miles (routes via I-405).

Any ideas about how crowded these facilities are midweek?

Angeles is the nicest range in the LA/OC area.
Mid-week is far quieter than weekends.
Thursday is half price day and it was common for there to be less than a dozen people using 40 benches before Covid.
Not sure how it is during Covid though as so many people are off work.

Angeles.

It's half price on Thursdays because LAPD swat takes over the rifle side at 1.

I think it's one Thursday a month.

Orange country is an urban sprawl

Hard to find a place to shoot loud rifles both outdoors and at a long range.

You really need mountains as a backdrop.

More than 50 miles, but very good ranges.
Outdoor - Angeles
Indoor - Poway Weapons and Gear Range (out to 100 yards, upto 50 bmg and steel cases are ok), at least it was last time I was there.

MCB Camp Pendleton, but only weekends and you have to be a member of the Santa Margarita Gun Club. Midrange goes out to 600yds, Longrange 1,000

Pala is good but the only weekdays open are Monday or Friday.

It's inconsistent so best to call the range and ask if rifle side will be closed.

And 600 yards at ASR.

It is less crowded on weekdays, but since they closed 1/2 of the benches, it's not as wide open as pre-covid.

I've only been to Piru once, but the 1000 yard range is great. And they rent private bays where you can go to town (BYO targets).

In the last year before I left CA (2019), I had some really bad experiences at Lytle Creek. So I would recommend against going there.

Angeles is a nice range as others have said, if you can tolerate the drive from Orange County.

Piru isn't typically too busy during the week, its been a few months since I've been there but I usually go on Wednesdays and there are usually plenty of open lanes.

Burro Canyon. Yeah, it’s only 200 yards but it’s a nice drive, cheap, and you can be back to Orange County by 1 for lunch. Go when it’s raining and you can use green tips and other magnetic cartridges. It’s about 50 minutes from my pad. Rahaugees sucks and is expensive and ASR is a mess. So many rifles shooting at the same targets you can’t tell if you even scored a hit. Pala is just too damn far and you’re screwed if there’s an accident on the 15 going there.

A mess in a sense that itís azzes and elbows. When Iíve gone itís been not worth the drive because of the sheer number of firearms being used at the same time. Makes it very difficult to determine if you are striking the steel targets.

Jarhead 714, no live fire training?
In war, you can’t jump up and say “hey you guys, stop shooting so I can see if I hit this guy or not”
Ranges are always going to be noisy and chaotic.

I don't like any ranges where they verify your firearm is legal. A few mentioned here seem to do that. I do not have an illegal firearm, but its none of the range's business for the following reasons: 1. they are not law enforcement 2. They are not lawyers that know the law 3. they are not judges that can rule on the law. 4. I don't have to show you my f**king registration papers either.

Just take my money and leave me to shoot. ASR RSOs told me they do not police firearms. That's a good thing.

And I'm obviously not advocating that they allow automatic weapons, but I don't have an issue with that either.

I would agree. But the insanity of making me wear a face mask OUTSIDE is too much. They rarely enforce it though so I good with that. The weekdays are really nice even now during the plandemic. Apparently, someone shot and killed a deer on the rifle range recently, so there are a--holes that show up.

The best place to go shooting in southern kommiefornia is really blm land. There's plenty and its free!

Drives usually 2-3 times longer on unimproved dirt roads and you have to worry about undisciplined shooters. Also too many crazies these days to risk family and friends. Bite the bullet joint a shooting club.

Depends on where you go. The spot I go to on BLM land is nice. If I go in the middle of the week like the OP wants to do, chances are I won't see another soul the whole day. Heck, I could probably camp out and shoot the next day as well, and still not see anyone (and I've actually done and experienced that). A significant percentage of the weekends are like that (holiday weekends usually suck, though).

I can shoot out to several hundred yards or more without having to walk a significant distance to targets since my vehicle can make it most of the way. If I was willing to hike uphill a good ways with a target and back, shooting past 1,000 yards, and safely, is feasible. The terrain also permits for safe multi-directional shooting, such as what you might want to do for tactical scenarios.

Most of the route is paved road. I have to travel on dirt roads (official or unofficial) for less than three miles. From OC it'd be about 2 hours, from where I live, less than 1 1/2 hrs. Traffic each way is usually not much of an issue.

It may be more of a drive, but I can pretty much shoot whatever I want, however I want, for as long as I want, and set my own breaks (and even check or change my target after every group if I want to do so), without people bothering me, and without having to pay fees to anybody, and without having to abide by stupid, tyrannical decrees from the dictator in Sacramento or of similarly dictatorial "health officers" from the counties (like the mask mandates and other crap).

To me, that's worth the extra drive, and far better than being at a range here in SoCal. I've largely stopped patronizing ranges as a consequence. Due to locations, the drives to the better ones can still be pretty time-consuming, even though they are not as far away, too.

Shooting somewhere like off of Hodge or Wild Wash Roads is another matter entirely. Definitely worse than a range in most respects, even now.

The bottom two sound like complete bull**** rules to me. I wouldn't tolerate that from a range. Certainly not if I'm asked to pay for that, too (particularly at those rates). Regarding rates, the worst ones charge that for a couple of hours only.

I go to a sweet spot out in the desert. We can set up on a ridge and shoot into a box canyon 1,800 yards out. The ground is marked every 100 yards out to 1,500. Not only is it a great shooting spot, itís also a great staging area for off-roading and camping. Even on busy weekends itís rare to see other people.
