If it's eighty calendar days it may be longer since they state 75 WORKING days on the website which is almost exactly how long it took for mine to come. You can always call them and inquire, nice people over there.

They said I was in the background check a few weeks ago so assumed I was close. But you are right, I think I'm in the 50's right now as far as business days. Regardless as you said they were really nice when I spoke with them.

Mailed application May 12. That would make today the 75th working day. So I went ahead and gave them a call. Guy on the other end asked for my info and informed me they received my application May 18th and that I was still in background.

I forget when I mailed in my renewal, I want to say late June. So about 2 months ago. Is this delay typical for renewals, or has the massive delay just been for new apps? I was surprised to see it taking so long, last time it only took like a week.

12/10/2020 mailed out with cashier check
4/2/2021 confirmed not received by AZPD (mail lost somewhere)
4/21/2021 re-mailed out with check
4/29/2021 confirmed mail received by AZPD
7/20/2021 emailed for the progress and was told still pending background
8/17/2021 dialed in and requested for the status; was told permit will be sent
8/26/2021 received permit

looked like the backlog really hit the progress..

Nope. So long as there's no reason for them not to issue, you should have a permit in hand this coming week.

Timeline…

Mailed May 12.
Received May 18.
Permit in hand September 8.

113 total days. Around 80 working days. Pretty close to their predicted timeline.

That's what I'm wondering, too.

I sent my renewal like 2.5 months ago and haven't heard anything. My existing permit has been expired for 2 months now - good thing I haven't gone anywhere that I needed it

You might want to call them and inquire.
I believe after a time (45 or 90 days, something like that) you have to start the process all over again.
They could advise for sure.

Yikes, I mailed mine yesterday.

I would suggest calling them at this point.

If you read a few post before yours...

There are two pathways of background checks...

1) instant
2) Someone has to manually run.

My wife and I both sent ours in at the same time. She got approved in 14 days. Mine took 77 days. I had to call mine in and the woman ran the background check over the phone, and I received my permit 5 days later.

I asked her how did my wife clear the automated system and I did not? She couldn't tell me. I think maybe because my wife has a unique name?

Yes, after the video, you still have to get finger printed and you will have to answer a bunch of questions and prove where you live. also sign some papers that you are responsible for anything that happens.

Same for me! They received my application on July 2 and I finally called last Friday and some nice lady went through my background check and cleared it. Supposedly my permit will get printed on Monday, I haven't received anything in the mail yet though.

I just got my permit in the mail today 9/18. They told me it will get printed on 9/13 Monday, so less than a week once it's printed.

Here's what I'm not understanding... Are they basically just not processing applications right now, except for when people call them to inquire, at which point they run it instantly?

Has anyone had their app go through recently without having to call them?

It seems so strange, AZ DPS used to be so efficient and fast, and lately it feels like they're only processing the people who call to ask what's taking so long, and kinda just ignoring anyone else who isn't calling.

I'm honestly considering just letting my AZ permit go. Kinda bummed that I sent them a money order for this last renewal, only to get ignored, but oh well. I'll just stick with my CA and UT.
