Exclamation Airsofter shot and killed in Redondo Beach

Just a reminder about airsoft in an urban environment -

At about 4:11 p.m., Redondo Beach police responded to a call about a man with a gun near the 2500 block of Gates Avenue; en route, they learned that the subject was shooting at another person in the area.

Officers arrived on scene and encountered the suspect, which led to the shooting.
NBC reporter shooting was fatal

And why wasn't the officer's body cam turned on?

The body cam is a great question. I have no idea how they are activated.

Is it a button to press on and off?
Does it activate when the car goes over a certain speed, or with lights or siren being activated?

Do you activate in the car or when out on foot?

— airsofter who was running around with an airsoft shooting his friend?

Did the guy leave the red tip on the gun?

Did officer drive code- lights and sirens? If yes, why the heck not ditch the airsoft before they arrive for personal safety and to maybe avoid the city code violation on airsoft

So many questions

Are you sure it was an airsoft (could it have been a pelletgun)? I didn't see any specifics mentioned about the gun.

From the KTLA link above

A man with an airsoft gun was shot and killed by police in Redondo Beach on Thursday, investigators said

— am I sure it was not a pellet gun??—

Nope. Not sure as the 3 “news’ outlets covering the story are contradicting themselves line after line.

After re-reading the KTLA post, first it says airsoft, then farther down it says pellet gun.

Just another media fail, because they don't know what they are talking about....

My guess- 85% of society don’t know about airsoft

No red tip shown on airsoft

It appears to be a CO2 BB or pellet pistol. The magazine bump on the bottom of the grip is a giveaway...Also No orange muzzle, trigger guard, and orange stripe on grip as required by state law for airsoft. Anybody brandishing one of these should expect to be treated as brandishing a real firearm. Play stupid games.....you know the rest....N.A.F.G......

Reminder that...

Airsoft, BB gun, and pellet gun; they are all classified as imitation firearms under CA laws. [PC 16700(a)(1)]

It's illegal to openly display or expose an imitation firearm in public places. [PC 20170]

Exemption to this for an imitation firearm that has it's entire surface painted in bright colors or is made from translucent materials. Just having an orange tip does not meet the requirements for this exemption. [PC 20175(m)]

Penal Code 16700
(a)(1) As used in this part, “imitation firearm” means any BB device, toy gun, replica of a firearm, or other device that is so substantially similar in coloration and overall appearance to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonable person to perceive that the device is a firearm.

Penal Code 20170
(a) No person may openly display or expose any imitation firearm in a public place.
(b) As used in this section, “public place” means an area open to the public and includes any of the following:
(1) A street.
(2) A sidewalk.
(3) A bridge.
(4) An alley.
(5) A plaza.
(6) A park.
(7) A driveway.
(8) A front yard.
(9) A parking lot.
(10) An automobile, whether moving or not.
(11) A building open to the general public, including one that serves food or drink, or provides entertainment.
(12) A doorway or entrance to a building or dwelling.
(13) A public school.
(14) A public or private college or university.

Penal Code 20175
Section 20170 does not apply in any of the following circumstances:
(a) The imitation firearm is packaged or concealed so that it is not subject to public viewing.
(b) The imitation firearm is displayed or exposed in the course of commerce, including a commercial film or video production, or for service, repair, or restoration of the imitation firearm.
(c) The imitation firearm is used in a theatrical production, a motion picture, video, television, or stage production.
(d) The imitation firearm is used in conjunction with a certified or regulated sporting event or competition.
(e) The imitation firearm is used in conjunction with lawful hunting, or a lawful pest control activity.
(f) The imitation firearm is used or possessed at a certified or regulated public or private shooting range.
(g) The imitation firearm is used at a fair, exhibition, exposition, or other similar activity for which a permit has been obtained from a local or state government.
(h) The imitation firearm is used in a military, civil defense, or civic activity, including a flag ceremony, color guard, parade, award presentation, historical reenactment, or memorial.
(i) The imitation firearm is used for a public display authorized by a public or private school or a display that is part of a museum collection.
(j) The imitation firearm is used in a parade, ceremony, or other similar activity for which a permit has been obtained from a local or state government.
(k) The imitation firearm is displayed on a wall plaque or in a presentation case.
(l) The imitation firearm is used in an area where the discharge of a firearm is lawful.
(m) The entire exterior surface of the imitation firearm is white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright purple, either singly or as the predominant color in combination with other colors in any pattern, or the entire device is constructed of transparent or translucent material that permits unmistakable observation of the device’s complete contents. Merely having an orange tip as provided in federal law and regulations does not satisfy this requirement. The entire surface must be colored or transparent or translucent.

This is why when my kids wanted to have an airsift birthday party on our 5 acres, I made them contact all neighbors that bordered the property, and called SO and made the dispatchers and watch commander aware. All had to have ANSI eye pro, and some sort of face pro.

The public routinely conflates airsoft and airgun, seeing them as one in the same. It's no surprise that the initial draft of SB 199 required both airsoft guns and airguns to be painted like toys in bright colors.

Surprised the media didn't call it an AR-47 assault pistol

Never a bad idea to wrap some bright red $2.00 electrical tape around the muzzle of an airgun IMHO.

i doubt that would change how an officer would perceive the toy gun.

cause what is to stop a gangbanger from wrapping their real pistol with that bright red tape too?

There are people that call 911 knowing full well that the "man with a gun" they're calling about is a kid with an airsoft gun, hoping that the police show up and "teach these kids a lesson."

a little over 10 years ago I was airsofting in a public school in Torrance. Police of course had been called multiple times but interestingly so on the first couple responses the Torrance Police Department just gave us the quick spiel about being safe. It was the young officers trying to be super cool. but it ended quickly and we were no longer allowed to. No guns were ever drawn on us or anything.

Some body cams are activated by in car triggers.. i.e. siren, lights, mic. Some are manually operated. Taser Corp is popular but there are others.. Up to the departments to decide.

All to often though they malfunction or a trigger malfunctions.. Or the body cam falls off or moves and tilts down if the officer is running... When alot of items are malfunctioning it can take awhile to fix depending on manpower, budgets etc..

Very common.

And yes, in car video, audio and body cam video will ALWAYS be immediately requested by the department immediately after a high profile incident.

Absolutely 10000% True! Years ago my little cousin 3yrs old was outside playing with a “Black azzault rifle”. Low and behold some douchebag libtard antigun called pd on him. Its obvious its just a plastic toy as no 3yr olds gnna be able to carry around such weapon. These sheeps just need to be transported back in time and handed over to the German camps
