Just got a response to my call yesterday to set the final appointment to pick up my permit. She asked me if I could come in on Friday afternoon, but I'm tied up then. She said the next appointment after that is August 21st, but that's outside of the 30 day window, so now I'm going in early Wednesday the 1st next week. So, for whatever reason, the 30 day thing is a thing, and a bigger deal than just completing the training... you need to leave time to pick up as well! So don't delay, when you get your approval letter, schedule training ASAP!

Assuming nothing goes wrong now, the whole process has been about four and a half months long. That's pretty silly, but it is what it is.

Picked my permit up today, bringing my adventure to a close.
Interestingly, they did (finally) run the serial numbers of my firearms. One, they found outright. Another took a little bit of poking. The third, a Glock I brought back from VA, they couldn't find. Looks like DoJ lost the paperwork. Since it didn't come back as stolen (really!), they went ahead and put it on, and said I should re-file the paperwork or it would be a small headache at renewal time. Final appointment took about twenty minutes. The permit itself is a laminated piece of paper too big to easily fit in a wallet They cautioned against trimming it down any more and said it could be folded in half. Pretty much any change must be reported within ten days, can be done on a walk-in basis (but that might change and is subject to availability, so an appointment is suggested), and costs $10.
