Benelli M4 with the weird stock

Some M4's come with this weird stock. What's the purpose of it? Would I be better off looking for a more normal stock?

In normal states that is a three position collapsible skeletonized stock. In CA it needs to be pinned in the position of your choice. I don't like the long length of pull on the standard stock personally. I pinned mine in the middle of the three positions.

I much prefer that, much(!) shorter length of pull to the long standard stock personally.

If you change it you'll be able to sell that collapsible stock in a heartbeat. Those are expensive. If you want the really long standard stock though, you're likely paying at least $150 extra for that stock. I see you're not in CA OP. I'd definitely go for the skeletonized stock if I were you.

Also factor in another $150 for the full length tube. You'll be wanting that. Some are steel. Heavier and cheaper. Some are titanium. Much lighter and pricier.

I hope you're stocked up on shotgun ammo OP. You'll find yourself shooting an awful lot of 12ga ammo after you get your hands on one of those.

The Benelli M4 was designed to fulfill US military requirements for a reliable combat shotgun (breaching gun) with operations similar to the M4 rifle. Stock needs to be adjustable to fit soldiers wearing body armor and for ease of carry.

yes, you'll find yourself surrounded by a decent pile of empty hulls in no time

as for the collapsible stock, different variants have different recoil tubes that affect the operation of the stocks..

I had no idea there were variations in the recoil tube sections. The photo in that thread lists the M1014 as having a non-collapsible version. The M1014 I bought, some years ago now, has the (sadly now pinned) three position version.

Unlikely. I don't have a reason, or anything to shoot at with a shotgun at this time. I haven't shot one for over 15 years. If I got one of these it would be for protecting the homestead.

Ah, that's a good reason.

Now I remember. I thought I saw somewhere that collapsible stocks were lot legal to import on "non-sporting" guns and that they came with fake collapsible stocks that only looked like the real thing. Not true?

It is true. The collapse stock versions can only be imported for LE. Everyone else gets fixed stocks. After that, people can change or modify them, with some question around the mythical 922(r) which by the way doesn't cover possession only the making of.

In CA it is a moot point, no collapsing stocks allowed on semi auto shotguns. I see you are lucky to live outside CA

It's moot for now, the one I had my eye on is gone. I still see ordinary pistol grip stocked ones for sale. The LOP issue probably won't bother me much because with any luck at all, I won't be shooting this thing much (only if I need to D my H).

Meh. I prefer traditional stock. Or better yet, Magpul's shotgun stocks. YMMV.
