Default Loaded Mule Ear

Sorry about the multiple posts, will go back to hermit existence after this one.

Three BP rifles came in.
Two replicas I believe.
One original.

The Replica with the lock plate marked "WARR" I am interested in, does anyone know anything about this maker?
It could be an original plate by "Nathan Warren", perhaps?

The Mule Ear is interesting too, all functioning and quite tight.
Did a provisional test with a ram-rod, and there is something about two and half inches filling the barrel, in the chamber area, that being the space between the end of the ram-rod, where it meets resistance and the nipple area.

Anyone have a source of screw head I could use to pop out whatever is stuffed in here? Or high pressure air on the nipple I guess.

I'm not really interested in fitting a number 11 cap and trying my luck, lol.

Maybe some kids did what my buddy and I did with his family's heirloom 1861 Springfield: put dirt down the barrel and tamp it in with the ramrod and then pull the trigger so that the hammer hit the nipple?

He also had a Springfield 1855 pistol/carbine and a Colt 1849 .31 revolver all from the Civil war. We played with them outside in the dirt because it was the Civil war centennial and nobody gave a damn about those old guns

Maybe -

But I think I will try to jury-rig something using a dry wall screw and a dowel to try to remove what's in there.

You can probably buy a worm the proper size. Try Dixie Gun Works. I visited their store in Tennessee and it was filled with antique and reproduction firearms and accessories.

Easiest thing to try first might be to spin a wire brush down the chamber, with a cleaning rod chucked into a drill motor. If it's packed with dirt or mud, this should clear it, then blow with compressed air

Remember Black Powder can be viable after many years unlike smokeless powder

We snipped a drywall screw head, drilled into a dowel, and threaded it in with pliers. Worked great. We pulled 4 balls and loads out of the family’s heirloom/wall hanger.

You obviously know that you don't want to risk putting a live cap on the nipple and trying to push it out using that potentially very old gunpowder (we can call that one the Big Bang method) because for all you know it might be double or triple loaded.

And even though instinctively I would want to put oil in there to make pulling it out easier with the scew or the air CO2 units there might be an old wooden ramrod or homemade broken-off wooden dowel (from someone's last attempt to remove the problem) down there that MAY only swell up if moisture , like oil or water is added.

If you do try and make your own screw device my advice on that is make something like the picture above that keeps it in the center because if it is a lead ball down there, it'll be so much easier dragging it back up if you run your brass screw (or metal that won't scratch the steel barrel) through the center rather than at an angle through the side of the lead ball along the inside wall of the barrel.

Just my two cents and not even worth that much.

have you thought about something like this https://www.amazon.com/Android-Endos...n%2C219&sr=1-2 an 8mm inspection camera ~$12 and see what is in there. its possible someone plugged it intentionally for safety.

Also have you tried to unscrew the nipple and see if anything shakes out i.e. powder

Thanks for the suggestions - going with the $3.50 attachment from TOW.
It's a great old rifle, kinda getting attached to it after all the fussing.
