Default 1st CCW renewal, lesson learned about how many to add to license?

Up for first renewal and trying to decide how many handguns to use. I originally qualified with something like 10, thinking I would rotate, but in reality I?ve only carried the P365.

I?m thinking this time around it?ll be the P365, a G19 in case something happens to the former, and a G20 for the woods.

I?m tempted to add a G21 too, since it?s my nightstand gun and if I ever take it outside at least it?s on my license, but then it?s a slippery slope to a 1911, etc.

Any tips from the veterans?

I forgot to mention that one of the drawbacks, in my mind, of adding too many is that you have to go through a bunch of red tape to sell or trade one when it’s on the license.

CCW holder here for 20+ years. Started out with 3, went to 5 but realistically only carry 2. I will probably go down to 3 at my next renewal (August this year).

Do you travel? Would you have need to utilize the differing storage rules when transporting in a vehicle? If so, keep those listed that would benefit you in more than just on-body carry.

The home defense situation is a valid reason if you walked out the door. Tuck in pocket, legal if it is on the list.

While ten handguns seems like a lot, now backed up with the OP's history as to what was actually carried for the prior two years, it just depends on the person.

I like Post_1's logic and thoughts as to what may be used for the renewal. Only the OP can estimate and know what to anticipate being carried.

It's apparently fortunate the IA, which may be Orange County, allows a person to qualify with ten handguns. How long does qualifying with ten guns take?

It's unfortunate individual, exact handguns even need to be listed in California along with other various rules imposed by the various IAs, e.g., owned by the permit holder; maybe caliber restrictions; modifications restrictions; optic sights; etc.

I have 7 on my permit. Only carry about 3 of them.

G26 85% of the time
G19 other 10%
LCP when hiking nearby or in gym wear
G21 currently experimenting to see if I can easily conceal it, even in the summer.

It’s good to have options.

If you and your spouse carry, it's a good idea to have any guns either of you are likely to carry on both permits, just because.

I’m tempted to add a P320 x-carry, because I shoot it best and am generally fond of it, but it’s DROSed as a single shot…not sure I can.

I had five and found myself where I only carried one 99% of the time. It took a while to get there, to get where one was all I needed. Last requalification I only put two back on the permit. If we did not have to shoot them all each time I would have left them all on. The new rules for qualifying each time with each gun made having so many on the permit not worth it when you added the the extra expense of ammo and extra fees to the instructor.

I can carry whatever I want, but I carry the same two I carried in SoCal OP. A G19 or a G43. I know.... boring. Well once or twice a year I carry a nice BBQ 1911 commander, but out in public, just those two.

That being said, I would add a couple as backups if I were in your shoes.

Here are reasons I can think of on why you may want to have "extra" guns on your CCW...

1) If it's on your CCW, you don't have to transport it in a locked container. But I believe the new CCW law that the tyrants are going to pass, limits you to only being able to carry two guns at a time (I think). So that may make this moot.

2) Perhaps there is a gun that you don't regularly plan to carry but it's a gun that you would "endure" carrying if things really go south...like a full size gun of some sort

3) Again, maybe not a gun you plan to regularly carry but it's a backup gun of sorts in case your primary gun breaks, needs servicing, etc.

4) Your "truck" gun...without getting into the debate of whether leaving a gun in a vehicle is a good idea in the first place.

All good points. Maybe I'll stay with 5 instead of going down to 3 as I mentioned above.

Went with:

P365X
G19
G20sf
G21sf

They did their part qualifying, although the P365X is responsible for the holes outside the bullseye. Glocks won the day, I guess.

My IA only allows three. It would be nice to list a few more, just to be able to experiment and figure out what is practical.

great thread and considerations discussed.

i think having an fcu based pistol (365 ad 320) on the ccw makes it easier especially if CA further restricts to 2 pistols for ccw per SB2. i hate having to qualify again every time some new frame or slide comes out.

Link?

I don?t recall limiting to two on the CCW.

I do remember limiting to two to carry on your person at any time.

That can get pricey if you’re issuing county/agency charges per firearm. My county only allows two, but think three would be ideal. Micro compact for warmer weather, compact or full-size for the winter and a backup.

copperjack on youtube discussed it 2 days ago. SB2 is still being discussed but that's what is being proposed right now.

2-3 pistols on ccw is what we typically have in norcal bay area counties today.

This is definitely a valid argument. For me, the G19 would fit that description, as it does for many military and law enforcement agencies.

At some point though, if things go that far south, CCW permits are out the window anyway, and I?m only using a handgun to get to my rifle.

I suppose you'd have to remove it off your CCW if you sold one to someone who wanted to add it to theirs. But why would you sell?

I have seven on mine. But really only carry one. But it's just nice knowing I can pick what ever I want from that list.

You have to remove regardless of whether the new owner is putting it on theirs, assuming they even have a CCW permit.

I put a CZ P-01 on mine the first go around, just in case, but I never shoot it. I plan on selling it but have to wait till the renewal kicks in.

What red tape? There?s nothing in statute requiring CCW holders to report or do anything regarding the sale of weapons on their CCW. As long as you sell it legally, the sale DROS will show the transfer. Since you sold the gun, you won?t be caught illegally carrying it, so having it on your permit is irrelevant.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember being told you have to report the sale of a gun listed on your CCW. Maybe an email to the unit is sufficient. I guess that wouldn’t be too onerous.

I have 3 on my permit but only carry 2. Personally I wouldn't go more than 3 as you will most likely never carry the 3rd and if you want to change it up, well...you renew every 2 years so just change it then.

If you can afford the extra money for qualifying all your handguns, I don?t why not get at least 5 on your list. Sure, you may not carry them all, but having a back up that is ready to go in the car is not a bad idea.

I’ve had 5 for the first couple renewals and 6 on my last one. Like others have said I really only rotated through 3 of them. This time I decided to cut it down to 3: p365, LCP for shorts weather and a XDS-45 when I want more knock down power like when hiking.

I’ve also got an AZ permit which doesn’t list the firearms so I can always change it up when travelling.

Add duplicates. If you have two SIG P365’s, then put both on there.

I was going to add that... if I was back in CA and had to limit to 3 again, I would have two G19's on there and a G43.

In San Diego (I believe) if you ADD a weapon, you must submit a 4 hour cert + qualify, plus a $10.00 modify permit fee. If you remove/sell or change addresses, you must pay the $10.00 and notify them of the change(s). I am adding one and thought IF you needed to grab and go outside, I would not want to think about what is on or off permit. However, I do think I will "thin the herd" next time, as qualifying is labor + cost intensive. I do not think SD has a limit on the number.
