Default Not sure what to do with my perfectly good SKS

I have a shortened Chinese 'paratrooper' SKS that functions well and looks good. I also have a Romanian AK. The SKS was my backup SHTF gun and my 'other end of the house' home defense gun. But I just had to have a ZPAP so now I have two AK rifles.

Should I keep the SKS? Should I trade it towards an AR or Mini 14 or M1A? Would it be worth scoping and turning into some type of marksman, scout or hunting rifle? (I don't hunt, though.) I now have three rifles that basically do the same thing; they all shoot 7.62x39 and have red dot sights. Thoughts?

Unless you have ammo or reloading supplies for others you want to get, I would just keep it for awhile if me.

Keep it; you could use it as a first rifle for your child to use, if you don't teach them with a .22LR. Or really, why shouldn't you have as many rifles as you want?

If you want to put it into absolute cold storage, assuming it's in relatively stock configuration, with ~7" height: take the rifle and several bandoliers of clipped ammunition and stick them in a yard or so of 8" PVC , fill the rest of the pipe with other nonperishable supplies, such as an IFAK, and seal it with end caps (S-type may be tight enough, or you could cement the pipe shut just to be sure). Then, bury it somewhere, at least a meter down.

Keep it original if it's a legit paratrooper model. It will only increase in value.

You have posted about this before in a different thread. If you still dont know about keeping or selling, just sell it. No need to hold on ,its doesnt sound like its something you want anymore. Get something you think you want instead.

I agree with landlocked above. You made a post a few months back about possibly getting rid of the SKS. Just sell it.

Although I’m not sure about your count. Unless you got the other AK (James River I think?) stock repaired, you really don’t have 2 AKs, you have 1 + spare parts.

This is true. I was having issues with my Romanian AK and my SKS. That’s partly why I bought the Zpap AK. But now all three rifles are working. Thanks for the advice all.

SKS is NOT a weapon built on the AK platform.
The SKS is more like a FAL operating system than an AK operating system.

Keep it.

Personally if nothing else I'd argue the SKS makes for a choice second rifle to teach a new shooter on; it's a step up from a .22 rifle but an intermediate cartridge rifle in a (relatively) heavy rifle helps absorb some of the little recoil it produces, and in stock configuration getting new shooters used to iron sights is something I would highly encourage.

Also, as others have said, paratrooper SKS's are not common, and their value will only increase going forward.

I have many many of both models (SKS and AK types)

I prefer shooting my SKS's. Especially the shorter "para" version.

Sell it and get a Browning BAR in 7mm Mag. Or 30-06. Or a shotgun and go shoot some skeet and sporting clays

What is a "legit" paratrooper model?

One that was made as a paratrooper configuration at the factory.
The illegitimate ones are the ones that were cut down after leaving the factory.

Thanks Randall. I didn't think that would need explaining if the OP owned one, but hey, the internet.

Depending on whether or not the SKS is “papered” might steer your choice. If it is a weapon that the .gov has no knowledge of your possession, I personally would keep it. We don’t know what the government is going to do in their quest to anal rape the citizenry tomorrow, so anything they have no knowledge of should be considered worth a premium.

I say keep it.

I think those para models are kind of neat. I have a friend that exclusively hunts hog with one.

Was not the para made from unmatching serial parts strictly for American market.
