Default Shooting at Cuyama Sat. Sep. 18th & Sun. 19th- All welcome

We're having a 600 and Palma (800, 900, 1,000 yard) matches on Saturday and another Palma match on Sunday if any of you guys are interested in trying it out or even watching.

I'm planning on driving up early Saturday morning, staying overnight and shooting on Sunday morning. If any of you guys would like to try shooting long range this weekend this would be the time to try it. I'll be glad to help you get set up, sighted in and coach you through a match.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll match my schedule up to yours to get it done. Here's the schedule:

Saturday, 18 September

8:00am - Palma 45 Shots

12:00pm - 600 Mid Range, 60 Shots

Sunday, 19 September

8:00 am - Palma Long Range, 45 Shots

Bring at least a half a dozen more rounds for sighters, more if you don't have a long range zero.

We’ll assign positions at 8:00 AM and Noon for the afternoon match. There’s no need to pre-register, everyone will get a chance to shoot.

We are now an electronic target range. The club utilizes ShotMarker targets. These targets eliminate the need for manning the pits and result in dramatically reduced match times. The targets are pretty sweet and allow you to focus hard on shooting and improving for the next match.

All of our matches are NRA approved and open to the public. Cost is $20 per match (for non-members) and includes $4.50 fee for score submittal to NRA. $5 discount for club members. NRA membership is not required to participate or to earn an NRA classification.

All are welcome to arrive early Friday or Saturday and can camp on the property. If you are into running water there’s the Buckhorn Inn in New Cuyama, a place in Maricopa and a couple of places in Taft, 20- 30 minutes drive from the range.

Google "TriCounty Rifle Range" on Google Maps for turn by turn directions.
The range is located east of CA33 about 3 miles south of the 33 and 166 juncture. Look for a green Palma sign east of 33 at the Foothill Rd intersection. Turn into the field and drive straight back to our shade structure. Please be mindful of the fields as they may be planted (stay on the well worn path).

Bring all your safety equipment and a shooting mat, the match is shot prone and a bipod or front rest is allowed, along with front and rear sand bags. In this heat, bring a hat, a chair, sunscreen and lots of fluids also

A good 100 yard zero (Look on JBM Ballistics to build a drop chart for the range that you are shooting. Use 100 yard increments out to 1,000 yards, The elevation at the range is 2,650 feet above sea level). Use 70 degrees F for the morning shoot and 90 deg. F for the afternoon shoot.

We only had four shooters for this morning's 1,000 yard match. I guess most of the people shot the 600 yard and 1,000 yard matches yesterday. I shot like crap after not shooting for over 6 months, I need more trigger time.

We had a 5-10 MPH wind coming from behind our right shoulders which is the wind that I hate the most on our range. The wind comes up the valley from behind us and then hits the slope on our right and creates a 90 degree right to left wind right at the targets. Sometimes you can't see the cross wind on any of the downrange flags except for the red "live fire" flag hanging over the target butts.

Oh well, I had fun and it was good to get down on the mat.

Next month there are no matches scheduled since it's our annual working weekend for range repairs. I'll probably bring my camping trailer down and stay the weekend.

Here's my second relay target. The high 7 was my sighter before the actual scoring shots. You can download the data to your phone or tablet for the match and it will give you the numbered order for every shot, the velocity of every shot, the velocity standard deviation, the distance from the center for every shot, etc. These electronic targets are actually the best teaching tool that you can get for shooting long distance. You could make a 4x4 frame and set it up at any range on the target lane as fast as you can staple the a paper target up and have the velocity figures at 100 yards and not need a chronograph.

Been very busy trying to find the time to head back out there. I’ve got some of my F-T/R load ready to go! I’ll be able to make this summer for sure. Even got a new scope to try!

That's great, Dane.

I'm going to order one of the Shotmarker electronic target kits for myself and I have two guns to re-barrel to get everything set up for the summer matches.

I'm putting a new barrel on my 243 and possibly my 22.250AI. I changed the barrel on my 6.5x284 just 8 matches ago so I'm under 500 rounds through it.

All the short actions are Savages right?

I’m considering investing in a switch barrel setup on one of these new actions that can use prefit barrels.

Can you please set the range thermostat for 80 degrees or lower the day before so it has a chance to cool down?

If I could, I would. I've been riding the bike every morning and it's 80 degrees here at 8:00 AM

I just found 100 rounds of my match load ready to go so I'm going to try my hardest to get out to a match before New Years. I've got a little one on the way so I'm trying to shoot as much as I can before taking a new baby break!

Man do I miss that area. Soda Lake, Carirzo Plains, Quatrail Canyon, Pine Mountain.

Great area to explore. Don't forget to stop and get pistachios at the Santa Barbara Pistachio Company.

Good luck shooters.

Something came up on Sunday so I am only going to be at the range on Saturday. I'll be there before the shooting starts at 8:00 AM

We shot the 600 yard match and a 1,000 yard match today. The guys who shot the 600 yard match first thing this morning had near perfect conditions with the range flags barely moving. One of the guys shot the 20 round first stage with a score of 200, 14X.

The 1,000 yard match was a totally different story with a 5-10 MPH wind continuously shifting directly in our faces to 90 left with a wicked mirage. It was constantly changing direction and if you weren't watching every second, you lost shots horizontally. A 10 MPH, 90 degree wind with my 142 grain SMKs from my 6.5x284 results in about 66" of drift at 1,000 yards. Were talking X ring to dirt ring in the blink of an eye.
