Don't know if that was your intention, but you definitely have the Galil look there, especially with the gas tube like that.

Wow, that is non-traditional! It's way more interesting than one with all the AR/Magpul stuff on there.

Just a quick spray, Ultimak tube rail, MI Flash hider and a cheap ($10!) lower hand guard from Ultimak

It's not durable at all. Duracoat or Alumahide is better.

This is my project. Been working on it for a while, just waiting for weather to get better (and days off).
Two tone (coyote-desert tan) Alumahide, will finish with Krylon camo after then with Alumahide clear matte.

about 40% done.

Yeah, it's not going to stay forever. I may use Alumahyde at some point, or just strip it back. It was more of a learning experience

Tip for you if you decide to use Alumahide....
One you start spraying, use the can as much as you need to (in less then 30 min) without storing the leftover for another day.
It's very hard paint to work with after the can has been in several weeks unused.
Might as well finish the project with a new can if you have to.
+ get replacement nozzles and green clear out ones.
.
.
.
not quite finished (lower rail guards, sling etc) but done with the paint job. Might take better pics.

Thanks! This definitely isn't intended to stay forever, so the next time I spray it'll be for real

I think I have found the ultimate in non-traditional AKs.

Going to go tactical soon on my Arsenal since it is a modern AK anyways. But first i am buying a WASR to keep the classic look. I think i am going to go with those midwest rails and a primary arms red dot. How much weight do those midwest rails add on?

@ Cuerno_de_Chivo

The Extended AK47 Handguard weighs 12.9oz.

The Regular AK47 Handguard weighs 10oz.

I have the extended and the Primary Arms Red dot on my AK as pictured above. I have yet to zero the AK with the Red dot, but the RS AKM Optic Mount that comes bundled with the Red dot (should you choose the side mount option) is quite sturdy, once again I have not fired the AK since installing both the Mount and the Optic.

Alright cool, thanks. The Midwest rails seem to be the best other than the Ultimak gas rail but the Midwest offer much more. It's going to hurt taking off my wood though.

Traditional AK's and especially with wooden furniture just don't do it for me and AR's are not my thing either.
With that stated, there's many ways one can improve on AK just like with any other rifle that you prefer. AK's just so happen to be my preference.
Yes, all these mods make rifle easier to shoot/handle. In my particular experience they make the rifle more accurate as well and I believe its combinations of things.

Converted Saiga (newer series with 24mm FSB).
Cheek weld with this scope + Magpul CTR stock is outstanding, well balanced and very easy to place on target, a world of a difference when compared to traditional AK.
Those Hand guards dissipate heat much better than any wood or polymer.

IOR 4x24 (tac scope)

Russian 24mm compensator has internal baffle, reduces recoil a bit but sound very unusual/weird, not like any AK muzzle break I've shot with. Only drawback is that its not chromed lined as some of the other Russian muzzle devices. Needs to be removed for proper cleaning but that's not a big deal anyway. I use fine steel wool and it works well.

Surefire G2 (200lm LED).
Probably the nicest AK I have ever seen...

Decided to go with a laser, since it's awkward to sight anyway. It's the tiny Laserlyte.

Man I would just love to send you my AMD with lots of money and have you send it back like one of your master pieces. BTW, I have put a lot of thought into some of your advice and after messing around with my AMD, I realized I will be changing things. I am going to put a burris fast fire 3 on an "Alpha mount", most likely get the magpul afg (because I love the one on my shotgun), and I got ahold of a Girber Expert-M and I think I might put that on as the light. What do you think of these changes?

Thanks... If you do, post it. I have no experience with that mount but I does look better then MI original version. That flashlight sees to be pretty good as well.
I'd probably try that route as well.
As to cammo.... I'd do urban if I had to do it all over again (black, grays, blue etc).

I will post if I can get it done. You know what, when I first saw your ak I thought about what I would paint mine and I did decide on urban cammo. I figured it made sense. Dang, now I have to go through the trouble of taking my ak apart, putting the original stuff back on, sell the new stuff that I won't use anymore, and then order the newer stuff and put it on. I tell you man, getting it just right for personal preference is a mother and advice like yours lessons the mistakes made and time taken. So thanks.

Not sure how "non traditional" it is. No rails or AR furniture, but it DOES have a 1/2-28 FSC556 brake. lol.

Saiga 223
Conversion
Polish Beryl handguard and stock
Pushed back front sight (AKM) to resemble the Beryl
Custom AR magwell adapter. Paddle release. Unmodified AR mags (Pmag and USGI)
Super duper hi-tech aluminum fin grip
I haven't refinished it yet. Too busy having fun with it. It gets dragged through the dirt so much, refinishing might be a waste.

I'm really into this. All functional, not trying to be a repro, just taking all the good stuff from the Beryl and making it happen on a .223 Saiga

ps: Do you mind if I re-post this on Tumblr?

I've built so many rifles, I'm way past the fancy stuff I just want it to work.

Re-post till your heart's content. I'll edit to add some better pics tomorrow.

Jager,

That's a great looking rifle. I wish I could have picked up one of those beryl stocks, but I got impatient and got one of the tantals.

7.62x39 Saiga conversion with NATO length stock. Texas Weapons System dust cover that I modified to accept a H&K G3 rear iron turret sight. 21" of sight radius now! More than doubles the accuracy of the weapon. Monster Man grip for featurless shooting with 30 round pre-ban mags.

You need a iPhone on that rifle.
If you can aim all that laser on to one point you can really do some damage. Or light a candle.

Just got my first AK after 20 years of shooting. I will enjoy the traditional look of th SGL21 for now. But I'm fighting the itch pretty hard.
And edit to add, how wre the optic surviving beed so close to the gasblock/piston or "Hot areas"

thanks

VLTOR is the most popular company making stock adapters for the AK, but EMA Tactical and AK Builder also have one, and there is always Tapco...

They should all work with the Magpul buttstocks (and other brands) if you get the version for commercial sized buffer tubes.

The VLTOR is expensive but it seems to the best built, but the EMA Tactical version looks promising. EMA also has a cheaper polymer version.

I used the VLTOR stock extension kit, a MOE and like the biggest cheek riser they made for the MOE. Works beautifully.
