Default Cops can’t own that many guns…

Without giving too much away, one of our customers is selling off about half of his 150-gun collection.

He told us that he really didn’t want to sell but his background check person told him that it would look bad if he had so many guns. He also was told that he needed to supply pictures of every gun as part of his documentation.

Is this true or anyone calling BS?

Interesting. When I went through backgrounds I was only asked how many firearms I owned and it was left at that. Granted, I don't have anywhere near 150 firearms, but I was never asked to provide details other than the amount I owned.

I was never asked anything about how many guns, what guns, or anything gun-related from what I recall.

LAPD background never asked me any gun ownership questions, but they did ask if I ever had sex with animals! It was 1980, so maybe a standard question.

Considering humans are animals, I suppose the correct answer is “Yes” unless you were a virgin at the time. I bet they would have asked some follow-up questions, but it would have been awkward for a moment.

Knowing a few of our Officers that work backgrounds for hiring, this topic has come up. It is in fact a standard question and you would be disgusted to learn how often it is answered in the affirmative.

I dont recall the firearm question being asked in my background.

Edit: I should mention that the animal thingy IS a disqualifyer.

Its one of the questions on their background screening, or PHS.

If the background investigator told me that, I'd go apply somewhere else. virtually all police agencies are hiring, most of whom couldn't care less. And I'm not sure I'd want to work in an agency that thought that was concerning.

When I applied with LAPD in 1994, I had to submit a list of all firearms currently and previously owned. List included make, model, and SN.

So 150 guns is a problem, but 75 is acceptable? That still doesn't make sense.

The PIBQ and PHS for the two agencies I've worked for in the last ten years both required the make/model/serial of each of my firearms, and asked if I had ever held a CCW permit. It never came up again in the process. I doubt they even ran the serials.

I spent 30 years with the OCSD and was never asked about gun ownership.

So every agency can ask what ever they think is important...# of guns owned is one question.

The applicant needs to carefully answer this question and discuss that with their background investigator/contact for the rationale.

It would be reasonable that a firearms instructor, sworn firearms SME, 01FFL, 03FFL holding applicant owns more firearms than the average applicant.

I had a partner that came from LAPD. You should have seen some of the creatures he had sex with. Obviously he lied on that question.

Should have given the same honest answer I gave my wife when she asked me how many guns I have. "I don't know, I never counted" To which she responded "Well I know you have 6 safes". She forgot to two at the office.

How many is too many I guess depends on the political proclivities of the Chief at the time. Do police chiefs report to mayors or the city council?

The first part of my post is relevant in the reply...while I agree with your "remediation"...the hiring agency sets policy and that is a fact their perception is solely relevant in hiring personnel..

A sergeant I worked with told me that during his background he was told that he should get rid of his Nazi proof marked P38. He did. This was over 20 years ago. (LAPD)

I was asked that once for a deputy BI
“why do you own so many guns?”
“I only own three…?”
“My list shows that you own ten?”
“Ive sold 7 and now I own three…”
“so why do you own so many guns?”

He already sold them all. I waited to post until they were gone so I wouldn’t jinx him.

When I applied for my clearance I was asked if I owned guns. Wasn't asked how many.

Most cops I have worked with, have no ideal what a "Nazi proof" or even what a "proof" mark is.

I am retired now but I remember telling my cop coworkers about a great day of duck hunting with my son (this was about 20 years ago) and they all were aghast and appalled.

In California I'm pretty sure they can look up all recent purchases.

Easier to explain than to sell half and not acknowledge that you purchased 150

How many guns do you own?

The answer is:

150 but 30 of them are loaners for friends and family, 15 are unsuitable for discussion here, 5 are in a safe at the Captains place , 13 are in a long-term transit situation, right now there are six in my trunk and one1 each in my pocket, ankle holster and my waistband.

Does the belt bucket job count? It's only a 22 short.
