What is there to hunt around sparks / reno area? Can you hunt at night? Can you hunt with night vision? Can a person hunt with thermal? Let’s say I buy a life time hunting license in CA , as a resident, because I still live here. Then I move to NV what can happen when they mail my CA license to a NV address?

In the Reno/Sparks area there may be coyotes and rabbits but shooting in that part of Washoe county is pretty severely restricted unless you're on a range. You need to get well away from the urban areas. Link here.
You do no currently need a license to shoot ground squirrels or coyotes in Nevada whether or not you're a resident. Your California license is not valid in Nevada for game. You'd have to check with the California Fish & Game folks to see whether it would still be valid if you became a Nevada resident. Nevada hunting regs here. |

The lifetime hunting license is good no matter where you live. They also have a few other lifetime options including big game which gets you a single deer tag and 5 pig tags. As a non resident the lifetime hunting/big game combo pays for itself in a couple years if you hunt or at least apply for deer. A friend has done what you are asking pretty much to a tee, moved from California to Sparks and bought the lifetime hunting license but did add the big game. He hunts deer and hogs every year near Hollister. One thing he regrets however is not buying the lifetime fishing, he says everyone in Reno goes west to fish. Certainly an exaggeration but I spend quite a bit of time in the Boca /Stampede area and Nevada plates abound.
I purchased my lifetime hunting/big game license last year in preparation for a move to Oregon. Plan to try to draw an "X" zone but my future residence is only 120 miles north of a " B" zone so I can put that as a second choice and still have an opportunity to hunt close to home. Pretty sure I figured I'd break even in 5 years or possibly it was fewer. My in-laws lived in north Sparks almost to Spanish Springs and the coyotes were thick but the area did not appear to me to be huntable. Jack rabbit/ cotton tail population is doing well, at least in Fallon I know they are. Tons of BLM land in Nevada you should have no issues finding a place. Buy OnX Nevada I believe they are still having a sale. If you have not used it you will be amazed at all the info at your fingertips. Good luck! |

Most of the more interesting game seems to require you going a bit further east/north, or squishing up against california. There's a bunch of NF land right in the middle of the state I have to go check out... Hunting at night tends to be species and county specific. For example, nighttime shooting and spotlight hunting is generally prohibited in Washoe County. I haven't heard of any restrictions for night vision gear...

My in-laws are in sparks. The area is prone to grass fires and they really try to limit the amount of shooting. There is a 'shooting area' map on the washoe county website, shows where you can & can not shoot which you have to go pretty far outside of town to do.
A coyote killed a rabbit in their backyard last year. Plenty of those 2 species around |
