Default BB removal ??

OK, i have two builds that I went featureless but I haven't gotten around to removing the BB. I just picked up two new mag catch buttons for the job.

My question is can I use the spring that is in the BB/mag release set up?

Most likely not, the spring is too short. These are the 3 parts for the entire assembly, although the magazine catch is the same so only the last 2 parts are needed.

The spring used with the BB will be too short, for a non BB solution.

Standard AR15 mag catch spring is longer and is a larger diameter compared to BB spring.

i'm still wondering if i should remove the BB installed by S&W on my factory sport.

i have it apart currently and from some threads some say it is held by red loctite and needs a torch to remove or to just drill it out. and i'm just waffling if i want to take the effort to do it when i can just as easily buy a magnetic button and call it a day.

That looks hard to to with a torch, maybe a soldering iron?

Do it the right way. IMHO... I had one or two where the BB wouldn't easily uninstall... I drilled with no issues.

There's a you tube video of someone using a dremel and cut-off wheel on the mag catch stud. That looks like a good option if you can't get the BB nut off but you'll need a new mag catch.

edit: here's link to video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz2PjgUo-7k

Ended up drilling out a friend's s&w ar's mag catch to replace the bb. Wasn't difficult, and it was worth it to him. Just take your time.

Thanks for the links. I already have the mag catch buttons so I will look at getting the other parts.

I have two that need to be removed. Funny thing is that one of them is on a Smith & Wesson lower. The not so funny thing is that I put the Loctite on myself

Check it 1st. I removed a factory one off my Colt M4 with a small flat head screw driver. Absolutely zero resistance.

Default BB removal ??

A soldering iron on the catch shaft where the BB nut is will release the red locktite. Might take a little time holding it there but there’s basically no risk of damaging anything on your gun using this process . Torch, no thank you. Dremel on the catch itself is fast, but if you slip, the cutoff wheel will ding up your receiver pretty good. Drilling same thing. Will probably go ok, but if you’re at all ham fisted, go with the least possible damaging method even if it takes a bit of time.

Luckily when I un-F’d all my gun’s after I moved, none of the magazine compliance devices I had were thread locked and just unscrewed. Other gun work such as receiver rail screw removal on FN rifles like the SCAR all require a soldering iron to release the thread locking agent.

On my benelli m4, when I swapped out mag tubes, they had so much red locktite on the factory mag tube I had to use a heat gun and one of those rubber oven mits for grip and to protect my hand from heat injury during removal. Stupid they use so much locktite.

You drill through the middle of the post from the latch side of the lower and the latch bar detatches from the post.

This is best done in a milling machine or drill press with the reciever fixtured so it won't move.
Once you get the latch bar off of the post, the post and bullet button will just fall out of the lower.

5/32" or 3/16" depending on how well you are centered.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I don't have a press but I think my brother does. Wish me luck.

Sorry to threadjack, anyone have a reasonable source for about 2-4 standard magazine catch springs? The link above (primary arms) has 'em for $.59/ea, but $8.24 shipping kills the deal.

I have that red bullet button replacement on all my lowers that you can back out a bit, so it acts like a standard mag release. I want to replace them with standard parts, but can't find any standard springs.

Fleabay but PA looks like a better deal even with $8.24 shipping. Cheapest I see on fleabay is 2 for $10, 3 for $15 shipped.

I checked them too and passed. I needed to order 2 springs and 2 catches. This placed worked out better for me. They're in California so I supported a semi local business and even though I had to pay tax it still came out cheaper.

Got my hands on one of those little BB install/removal tools and I was able to get one of the BB out with no problem. I'm going to work on my S&W and see what i can do to not have to use a drill.
