Default Russian wood, gotta love it!

I took the Russian SKS out of the safe for its semiannual oiling. Man what a beautiful stock! I thought I would share...

The Russians also know how to beautifully laminate wood, almost like a sculpture.

Ruger should hire the same workers to build their laminated stocks.

That is a very pretty stock, unfortunately it's not original. It's been refinished. The original hardwood stocks were birch with a red shellac finish. The schellac has been removed from your rifle, and replaced with something else.

Still very pretty though.

The original finish should look like the pic's below.

My two Russians below. I never shoot them, yet I can't bring myself to sell them.

OP here...

Yup, its been refinished! Unfortunately I bought this Russian SKS with a "Rattle can" finish! The previous owner had painted it with brown Krylon paint. I attempted to restore to its former glory and this is as close as I was able to.

Very nice collection of Russian SKS SVT-40! I have followed your postings over the years and have seen some of your other firearms and have to say you must have a very nice complete collection.
