Polishing stainless handguns
If you are considering sending your favorite stainless handgun to be polished
check the cost carefully. More of these are coming up and they can be pretty expensive. In addition to the cost, consider that buffing and polishing to get that mirror finish is going to round off your guns sharp edges. Check this pic of an original finish (top)and (bottom)an expensive aftermarket job. Not meant to disparage the people doing the work just an FYI of what you may end up with. I don’t send any of my guns for any type of refinish.

Sorry your pistol is ruined. Whoever did that is a hack.
If he claims to be a gunsmith he should be ashamed. He knows nothing about polishing guns. You should post the name so others can avoid him. You can get a mirror finish and leave all the printing and edges crisp. It is not a problem. |

finish. It does take time but you won’t burn the edges by not going at 4000 rpm. . The hand finish won’t achieve the high speed buffer finish but has its own appeal.

I have polished a few things in the past. It is all about the time and technique. You can have a mirror polish without completely melting the edges. Yes, they will get rounder, but it all depends on how you polish.
here is a more controlled example: https://forums.1911forum.com/showpos...17&postcount=1

The main parts to be polished are flat. Mask the bead blasted areas. Use ever finer wet/dry sand paper backed by a flat surface. It goes much faster than you think. Finish up with Semichrome. Small parts, like the safety can be done with Semichrome and fine steel wool.
It will looks dead flat and lazer straight. If you use a buffer it will not be flat and the reflection will be distorted. Guns always look better if you avoid the buffer. |
