First long range build

My obsession with long range target shooting started with a purchase of a PWS .223 Wylde 14.5" piston upper. Impressed by its accuracy I decided to build my first precision type AR 15 rifle. I first started looking at MK 12 type uppers from BCM and PRI. However, they were pricey to say the lease. But then I recalled how accurate my PWS chambered in .223 Wylde was so I took advantage of the Palmetto State Armory Easter sale and purchased one of their "Premium" uppers. I ended up getting exactly what I wanted and luckily got their 18" rifle length CHF uppers chambered in .223 Wylde. After I zeroed it in I was blown away by its accuracy. For less than what it would cost me to buy a BCM or PRI upper MK 12 upper, I basically got their stripped lower, LPK, and the upper for about $700. Still waiting for my 10 day hold I decided to slap that 18" upper on my M&P 15 lower and took it to Angeles outdoor range to see what kind of accuracy I would get out of the 18" .223 Wylde upper. To say the least I was blown away. My first build was producing sub MOA groupings. The optics I was running was the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x rifle scope. My first 5 shot group at 100 yards was impressive. Well to me at lease considering a $700 rifle build would produce this king of accuracy. As soon as I get my PSA Govt roll marked lower out of jail, I will be getting the upper and lower receiver cerakoted FDE.

Ok, looks good so let's bump it up to 200, then 300, 400, etc...

Thank you. I have been able to hit the round plates all the way out to 600 yards with east but unfortunately I am unable to set up paper targets past 100 yards to see what kind of groupings I get past 100 yards.

Yeah, that's the problem with " banging steel", you're just (maybe) hitting somewhere on a 6 moa manhole cover with no feedback on accuracy. Since you head out to Angeles, maybe consider checking out a f class midrange practice match at Burbank Rifle Club https://www.brrc.org/

Great bunch of guys, knowledgeable, super helpful for newbie, etc. They shoot on electronic targets that give you immediate feedback.

Go over to the Hide if you want a food forum for what you're looking for. You qwer just warned to have thick skin because they won't mince words or take miss use of terms like "my sniper rifle" etc..

You'll be fine. Keep your head down and ask good educated questions and if you don't know then just be honest and ask. You will get expert advice from actual experts , and not what you get on CalGuns.

Have you noticed any small fliers on your last round when the bolt locks open? That's common. If so just shoot up until the last round to ensure good groups . The bolt locking open will open up most AR's

Good point to bring up, and it is more apparent at further distances. I've read different theories, such as bolt locking open or follower exerting different pressure on bcg with last shot. Regardless, we don't see it when shooting F class, or NRA midrange-Tactical AR since each round is fired single loaded.

I had no idea that the bolt being locked open on the last shot can cause a small flyer. I will definitely look for this tomorrow as I will be taking the rifle out again to see if I can consistently get sub MOA groupings out of this upper even after it warns up a bit. That was a great observation. I assume you came to that conclusion from the photo of my 5 shot group.

The bullet is long gone from the barrel before the bolt even reaches the end of its stroke backwards, let alone locking on the bolt hold open.

At 10 seconds in you can see the bullet leave, gasses come out the barrel, then the shell ejects. The AR last round flyer theory due to some kind of reciprocation is incorrect.
