I have alway been wanting to get to 1k yards and was looking at CA MPR as I have a CR 5Five6 AR, However while at my local Turners I saw a SAKO TRG 22 in .308 at a price almost 1/2 off retail ( it has been there for 3 years since before it was a Turners ) so I jumped on it . any suggestions on a Scope? not really looking to break the bank with a Gucci set up but was looking at a 5-25 x50 vortex is this a good choice in the world of distance shooting? I figured with the price I paid for the rifle I could get a decent scope. any other bells and whistles you could recommend ?
I know there is always better calibers to shoot out to distance but as newbee I know the availability of .308 is a lot easier than some exotic rounds.

.308 is a good caliber to get your feet wet. Depending on your set up and if you reload you can reach out to 1k no problem. .308 will be more effected by conditions out to distance but most recipies keep it at speed out to 900yds??? Could be wrong.
Jump on the deals going on right now on scopes. Get a 5x25 and stick to reputable brands without breaking the bank. Vortex and Burris as well as Athlon are good budget type scopes that are well made and solid, I've owned all 3. Utilize savings for ammo. Are you going to reload?? |

You're fine. The 900yd rule applies to the 168gr flavors of ammo....and even that is not really a hard rule either. Stick with175 or heavier for best performance. Federal GM match is good to go. So is the vortex choice.

Spend as much as you can on good glass… often the glass is more expensive than the p,aTo from, and rightly so. The further you want to stretch the legs, the more important it becomes.
I love my ATACR which I put on my .260 Tikka T3x TAC A1, and I’ve been able to hit steel out to 3/4 of a mile. Likely couldn’t have done that with lesser glass.

Get the Bushnell Elite Tactical. Done.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...0_Mil_Dot.html Five years ago, you really couldn't shoot 1000 yards without a $1,000 scope. Times have changed. (Stay away from the Vortex PST scopes.) Also, look at the Athlon scopes. They're a deal. Vortex Razor's are great. If you really want to to shoot long range, you cannot skimp on the scope. I'd plan on spending around $1000 or more. I use a Nightforce and couldn't be happier. I would rather pay the higher price and not worry about bumping the scope, etc. At times, I carry my rifle by using the scope as a handle, because it is a Nightforce scope. If it was any tougher, it'd rust.

Yeah, I shoot 1K generally at between 10-15X too, so I can see more of what the mirage is doing, but that's just me.
Good to go on Vortex glass. The warranty is the real deal. I messed up a scope on accident and Vortex took fantastic care of me. |

I think the Vortex Diamondback tactical will work fine out to 1000. The glass is good enough to shoot accurately and it dials well. Great warranty. I've seen several people who like Arken scopes, but I've never looked through one myself.

Vortex pst are nice for the money , Leopold Mk 4 is also nice. Lots of great options the Mk4 has a .308 adjustment knob if budget allows. But the rifle is a great rifle and .308 is a solid round to start getting into shooting at distance to 1000

Like many have mentioned, Vortex is a good option. I have the PST Gen2 on my Remington 700 in .308. Have gone as far as 3/4 mi. Every now and then you will find deals on Opticsplanet. Arken optics is also a nice budget scope. Got one on my 223 build and the clarity on the scope is unreal. Haven't had a lot of range time with it so I cant say how well it performs. So far I like it.

I have either owned or used 3 Arkens. I wanted so much to like them, but I just can't. The reticles are way too thin, and the new one casts a shadow on the front lens. The turrets are enormous and clunky. Euro Optic has some great deals on PST 2's. Thats what I'd buy for a sub $1000 optic for this purpose.

I started with a savage factory 308 with a heavy barrel, and I have been using a sightron iii 8x32, that hasn’t limited me for the last 10 years. Since then I have purchased Burris xtr iI, nightforce competition, Athlon, and tract (new excellent scope). They are all very good, but they are not Nightforce. Especially for someone like me with terrible eyes. If your eyes are good, then you could get away with a lesser quality scope. You won’t go wrong with an upper end of each of those brands. Check out the accurate shooter.com classifieds for some great deals on scopes… good luck…
