Default Official list of Amateur "HAM" Radio Operators and info

I was thinking we should have a list of HAM's.

List your call sign Class of license
General location
your radio equipment more than 1 if you want
antenna
If you are part of any clubs or Org's

Example for me would be
Vanity granted W6XXX General PM for callsign
Bay Point, CA
Yaesu VX-8R with Diamond SRH320A antenna yaesu 7900 for the car, neat little radio with scanning *wide receive* capabilities
2x Yaesu FT-7900 in both vehicles Diamond mag mount antenna
Yaesu 857D HF all band rig
For those who do not wish to post your call sign, you can list what radio gear you have etc, and if you want people to talk to just say PM for call sign.

I am a Technician Ham Operator! passed my test tonight 7/17/09

I am now a General as of 6/17/2011

Im in the process of studying for the last week or so and plan on taking the test this coming Friday.
I just placed an order for the new yaesu vx-8r and a diamond srh320a antenna since it has 22 reviews with a 4.9/5.0 score

http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/4298

there are a few websites that you can take free practice tests on

Links to practice exams

http://www.eham.net/exams/
http://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/study.jsp

Find a place to take an exam

http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-...e-exam-session

Just a few places and links to buy and look at Radio gear
http://www.gigaparts.com
http://hamradio.com/
http://www.universal-radio.com
http://aesham.com/
www.eham.net/
http://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com
http://www.hamcity.com

Ham radio magazine
https://www.arrl.org/join-arrl-renew-membership/

39$ a year gets you a membership and 1 yr subscription to ARRL magazine.

plus you also get a choice of a book for free.
Usually a study guide for General, Extra , or other book on ham radio stuff like antennas etc.

KI6XXX General since last year

still only have a 2m HT, Yaesu VX-170. i can vouch for the Diamond 320A - i only use it on 2m, but it came with this radio, works great, and the person i got it from actually did the SWR testing themselves to decide what antenna to get. it is a bit long.

i usually check in to the Bay Area's 9am Talk Net on N6NFI/R - if you hear me on there, i go by emilio, too. i helped out at the PAARA-shoot, if anyone here went to that... gave the reloading demonstration.

Sounds like a bad connection inside. Yaesu has alot of problems with internal power supply connections. (bad grounds and solder joints). I really like Yaesu and Kenwood radios myself, but I have a little of all of them. If you decide not to send it off you can bring it by and I would be glad to help you with it. I am in Stockton.

I believe the secrecy is due to the fact that many people here discuss the firearms they own. Would you post your address in your sigline here ?
As you know, the FCC database is on the web. Unless you have a P.O. box for your mailing address on file with the FCC you probably have your home address.

Home is where most people keep their guns...

Didn't you just answer your own question?

And with just a call sign (and nothing else, which is usually the case here since most use aliases) you can find out a person's name and address.

They dropped the CW requirement for licensing awhile back. I myself am a Phone operator, no CW yet.

Default They did away with morse

Now all you need to know is how to turn the radio on.
No need to know anything about operating procedures, SWR, antennas, feedlines etc.

And talking car to car on a high level repeater is taught as good operating procedure now.

I hear the FCC is planning to allow a license out of a Cracker Jack box soon.

35 year Ham.

I have my General license (missed Extra by 2 questions, I didn't plan on taking it so I didn't study for it), but don't have, nor have I ever used a radio.

My partner Elaine is WA6UBE.

She gets to be honourably retired, these days, after having been in charge of local public-safety commo capability for a major local agency for quite a few years. (and, oh, my, the stories she could......but must not, not even a little bit...... tell, after thirty years in public-safety commo.)

We're the ones who have the M37 set up as a commo vehicle, with an ex-MLQ-24 shelter set up with an extensive array of modern commo gear.

Have a look on our web-site www.tactical-link.com if you'd like.

In theory, at least, should 'the big quake' or some similar disaster occur, which disables the Ma Bell land-lines, the mountain-top repeaters, microwave dishes, etc., we're part of the local 'reserve commo'.

We're set up so that we can talk to the beat cop's hand-pack, or the fire captain's radio set on his rig, should he/she be unable to talk to dispatch, and pass the traffic to their dispatch, or to local, county, and state EOC. We're set up to talk to aircraft, and are linked with the Federal FEMA and SHARES programmes.

We did interoperability training with the Army Reserve commo people, but.......for any would-be terrs out there........we don't carry any active military crypto, so don't bother trying....we do carry commercial PGP, but thats really pretty useless in any real emergence scenario.

(fact is, if the 'big one' happens, some of our friends will be nice, and set up a perimeter around our rig.....so, no, we couldn't be taken over for the 'voz de atzlan','voz de la revolucion' or whatever.)

How can you help? In this day of 'no code techs', you can pass a simple test and get a ham licence......then become acquainted with RACES, the civil emergency commo group, or, at least, 'San Jose Prepared' group, and help to co-ordinate local rescue.

Now, ask yourself just how many people have set up the equivalent commo capacity, to be able to pass emergency traffic to state and Federal agencies should the 'big one' or other major disaster happen in the Santa Clara Valley.........aside from ham ops who can rig antennas and get out on ham freqs..... (my own guess is that, should there be a real disaster here, you'll be able to listen in on the ultimate 'Sino-American Fire Drill', or 'Charley Foxtrot'......but, yes, I'd really like to be mistaken about that)

Now, aren't you really grateful that 'the big one' won''t happen in our lifetimes?

(I could offer an opinion of the investors, developers, etc., who built high-rise buildings, which will have thousands upon thousands of occupants during business hours.......on alluvial fill ground, in a famous earthquake zone.......but, doubtless, no one would be interested in my opinion.....I just tend to avoid that area, myself)

cheers

Carla

You should have got the new VX-8r. The VX-6r is easy to freeband mod though, you just have to remove one solder jumper from under the battery.

Would have liked to, but price was a factor. For ~$80 less than the VX-8r I was also able to get a Comet antenna and a microphone. The -6r was already a step above my original plan of the FT-60r.
