Default Muzzle Loader Rifle Range

Hello;
I have just completed building a Traditions Cap and Ball Kentucky Long Rifle and was wondering if there is a range that I could take it out and shoot. I live in Roseville and have shot at Lincoln Shooting Range and Sacramento Valley Shooting Center and was wondering if they allow Muzzle Loaders. It was a fun project in my first black powder rifle.

Thanks

I have heard of others using black powder guns at Lincoln without issue. You might need to check with the RO ahead of time during the dry months but right now it's still pretty wet so it shouldn't be an issue.

I shoot M/l at the Lincoln range frequently. During dry periods they assign me to lanes in the center where there is no chance of a fire. Very friendly there.

Sac Valley allows them and there are a couple of muzzle loader clubs that shoot there. I try to be considerate and get as far from others as I can and down wind if possible. When you check in mention you're shooting BP and they might set you up.

I shoot front stuffers at Sac Valley all the time. The only issue is they want the use of chamber flags during the breaks. I just stuff one into the hammer area.

And just FYI, the concrete shooting benches at Sac Valley are not real friendly for loading the muzzle loader. I take a couple of towels. Drape one over the side of the bench to lean the barrel against, and put one on the ground to set the gun butt on.

You can use bean bags to protect your rifle from the concrete as well.

No problems at Sac Valley. Most of the other shooters appreciate the smell.

Headquarters for the California Air Resources Board is a bit too close for comfort for using flintlocks at the Sac Valley Range.

One shot and it's a spare-the-air nasty gram ticket.

Thanks for the info. This Saturday looks like it is going to be dry so I might just take it out then.

I shoot black powder at every outdoor range without issue.

Only thing I have encountered is that every range has a preference on how to handle the ceasefire. One range wants muzzle up with the ramrod in the barrel, other range wants the barrel down range, still another doesn't care so long as they can verify the gun is not capped or primed.

I just do whatever I normally do at the first cease fire, and if it's a "problem" the RO corrects me. Then we're good for the rest of the day.

Yes I did. Then had nothing but fun the rest of the day. Great range and ROs were very good. Took the target out to 100 yards and had surprising good groupings for a 33" barrel and twist if 1 in 60.

So...
How did the flinter workout for you? Any failures to ignite? What was your loading protocol? What did you do with the gun during the breaks?
