Default Favorite ideas for HD or Tactical Scattergun targets?

Thinking of getting a shotgun for home defense, maybe a Beretta 1301. So, was wondering with the shorter barrel what are some fun ideas to set up targets for them. Usually head out to BLM to shoot pistols and rifles.

What distances would you recommend for farest targets?

Definitely keep steel targets at least 20 yards away and tilted downward when ever shooting in BLM due to the distance to travel if you need medical attention. Drills, run and gun is good training, but unless you have proper medical training BLM is probably the last place to practice at. Even trying to do a high speed quads, you can easily slice your thumb open if not done right. Check your local ranges for action/3gun type matches, which is a great place to run and gun in a safe environment. When I shoot matches I don't do it so much for time, but more on technique, reading cover, loading under pressure, shot selection, short stocking, taking cover when loading, making head shots with a no shoot in front at different distances with buck/shot, etc.

Measure your home

What is the longest and shortest shot you could take inside?

Bowling pins are a good target. Good safe target
Similar to A zone or a heart shot

At Front Sight the Steel Targets are placed in a line. They are hung so that they are angled down so shot is deflected downward

The firing line moves from 15 yards to 20 for most iterations. 50 and 35 yards for slugs drills. No slug in or on the gun closer than 35 yards..

We also do some shooting at 5 and 7 yards for patterning Buckshot to see what it will do a close range like for a Hostage shot, but those shots are taken at paper targets where there is no danger of blowback..

Do NOT shoot Steel Targets with Slugs closer than 35 yards as they can and will ricochet and sometimes come right back at you. With birdshot (which is what you should be using for 99% of your training) 15 yards is fine.

Anyway that's what they do at Front Sight.. No reason why you can't use IDPA Cardboard Targets or make some out of cardboard boxes set up at various distances for your practice shooting. They don't cost much and can be used as kindling for your camp fire at night.

This and for targets, just use a standard 8.5x11 sheet of paper.

(hold a piece of said paper over your chest and you'll see how it covers center mass)

Paper plate stapled over a silhouette target COM and head. Work at it until you can keep the buck pattern within the plate at 15-yards.

Then go to slug at 25-yds. If you think you're good, shoot increments out to 100-yd.

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions. Now, I have a better idea what I'm looking at for setting up targets.

The first thing I do with any new shotgun purchase is to pattern it; this can uncover any issues with the gun. If this is your first shotgun, you should learn how shots spread out (I call it the cone of destruction") and the different chokes. Since you mentioned HD, you should use buckshot or something; note don't shoot slugs out of a very restricted barrel (obvious, I know, but just in case).

Could you clarify? Full or Mod choke? I was under the impression Mod was OK, but no tighter.

I only shoot slugs out of improved cylinder at the smallest.

I have shot Foster/Brenneke type slugs out of full choke barrels lots of times over the years. No problems.

*The lead vanes on the bullet allow it to be swaged as it travels down the barrel and out it goes. Those vanes are NOT rifling.
**Some slug types have caveats as to what the ammo is designed to shoot out of with regards to choke. Read the box.

You could get yourself a 66% IPSC AR500 steel target since it’s so versatile and reusable

Save up your used soup and bean cans. Make them dance until they’re out of range

This would be my suggestion.

I would use cardboard. Easy to repair holes using masking tape. Plus you can draw silhouettes on them.
