I carry a gen5 glock 17 with RMR. Only our SWAT team is approved for duty use, but they’re thinking of rolling it out for patrol.

They’re the future. All the same arguments were made for red dots on rifles. They take training, but make you significantly better on the move and at a distance. If your older and thinking about making the transition I don’t think it’s worth it, but for anyone starting out, I’d buy a RDS gun and get ready cuz they’re not going away.

Yes. This is true. I ordered from Safariland 6390RDS for a G17 MOS with an 8-12 week delivery time. A great calgunner sold me one. I have found a source for full/compact size P320s here in CA. Current pricing is $170-200

Santa Ana runs rmr’s. Trijicon. On duty and off. Officer must provide the gun and RMR at their cost. Costly yes but a lot of their officers are going for it. Both the new kids and the veterans are spending the $ for them and I believe about 80% of the assistant range masters have purchased as well

I am slowly making the transition from irons to rmr, ran the pistol for a two day class (800 rounds) and now getting to a point where I am approaching equal to my iron sight times with the red dot - it's been 20 days and I am still improving but not there yet.

Biggest take aways so far:

Your consistency with grip from holster to target is paramount.

Bring the back plate of the pistol to your nose every time/your optic should be eye level. I usually am pointing high and need to adjust down.

Point both shooting hand thumbs toward the target. Have your stance set up toward target and use you hips to rotate to multiple targets.

For me, I am only running the gun as fast as getting hits requires. I would rather be slow and make my hits. I am using a shot timer to quantify my iron and red dot times.

It takes time to get proficient with rmrs.

Yes we did. RMR type 2, ACRO and Sig Romeo 1. You can only have it on the Glock MOS, M&P CORE and Sig classic series that have the Romeo 1 already mounted on it from the factory. There's a bunch of requirements that the individual Deputy has to meet before he/she can start rocking it on and off duty. Mainly qualifying expert with your duty weapon. The weapons training unit worked their butt off to get this passed. I for one am looking forward to it.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but our agency is in the process of testing the MRDS platform and writing a policy.

Would any of you guys be willing to send copies of your policies to my department email so we can get a better idea for what we need to include?

Obviously we would communicate via PM or agency email.
