A bit of an issue since they don't split out the items. The background check isn't $60, so they added their fee into it. It also looks like they taxed everything, which isn't right.

Looks to be:

Background Fee $60
Lock $5.00
Tax $6.50
Total $71.50

1. Doesn't even itemize and instead just simple general "background check" and because its grouped like that they can add whatever they like and hide it under "background check".
2. Sales tax is taxed everything!

I haven't been inside the location but if there were a sign stating they charge $12.81 service fee on all PPTs then each is own. I believe I read somewhere long time ago that if an FFL posted or disclosed/signage a service fee, they can do it. But like I've said most only do $37.19 + $10.

As far as the tax, they are not suppose to charge tax on $47.19.

IIRC, that's okay for Dealer Sales (this is what Turner's does), and for FFL to FFL transfers in and out of state, but for PPTs I believe the CADOJ caps the "Dealer Fee" at $10 (this is why some FFLs make you buy a lock).

Report it to the CA DOJ.

At this point, just to be able to get a PPT done it's worth it. Still not legal for them.

It is illegal to charge additional fees for a CA PPT. That is how it is not legal.

Wow - a straight $60 for background check and no further detail. Then $5 lock and sales tax on the entire amount due.

Good to know never to step inside this guy's shop.

Were you in line for 5 hours waiting? was this shop packed with mouth breathers standing next to you? What's your time worth?
Sheeit...If not, I say you got a deal for your money. Most FFLs are packed through next month.
me personally, i'd gladly pay a few bucks extra to get in and out and not wait hours and hours.

cheers

There are many shops still holding down the fort, for example RTBA LA. As they have changed theyíre policy. Appointments only, all made through their website, and neatly Organized by PPT, Dros pick up, Ammo pickup, etc. Iíve already have done a few PPTís
