Hey guys,
Prior enlisted 2LT 12A with the UT NG. I'm moving to Riverside area soon and was wondering about 12A slots in CA. I've already started talking to the Guard OSM about slots with the 578th and I'm waiting to hear back if they have any slots that haven't already been given to ROTC kids but this time of year, I may be outa luck. Regardless, I thought I'd try and learn about units in CA even if they don't have slots currently. I'm also open to the Reserves but I can't find any useful info on the Reserves in CA. Are there any Reserve Engineer units in the southern half of the state? And assuming there are Reserves openings, are there clear benefits to one over the other? I know the official differences between NG/Reserve but I'm curious to hear from people with experience in one or both. For example, I was able to enjoy 7 months of Covid orders immediately after graduating OCS last year, by far the easiest job I've ever had. I know that was an option in every state but def pretty fun. On the other hand, having to fight fires all the time or live in freezing parking structures in DC sounds pretty crappy.

here is the link to every single USAR vacancy (tens of thousands), you need a CAC to access it. last I checked there were two 12A slots open in CA. One up north and one down south both Platoon Leaders. So you are in luck If you are already 2LT there is no reason you can't be double slotted on the UMR (commands like to hoard officers so they can move them around as they desire). There are contact phone numbers of the units if you are able to access the data with a CAC I suggest you down load the Excel version, and then filter on your needs (rank/MOS/location) and give the UIC's to retention folks.

Oh I guess I'd also suggest if you find a unit and location you like but without a LT vacancy you reach out to them anyway.
Like I said, commands like to hoard LT's. There are no 2LT vacancies (ever) you are looking for 1LT or CPT.

And thank you for the link. I'll make some calls this next week.
