If you had Windows you can usually use the 'Paint" application to edit it to whatever side you'd like that doesn't exceed the CG picture size limit, haven't used Mac so not sure if they have their own application like that.

Not sure as mods work part time, unpaid afaik. Also not sure if they're on an 8-hour shift or something different.

As I've posted before, the only thing that will fix the Marketplace here is full-time moderation, with a paid moderator, and allow Contributors only.

That's a pretty great idea, I feel like the marketplace is where a mod is needed most being that it's the section where business transactions take place.

How about a forum for Stickies? It seems few people read them, many who say they can't find something in a search don't really try "evidenced by just putting in their own question and finding many answers" and they take up much of the space.

In there you could have:

Penal Code (nice to have it in posts but replies could link to the sticky)
Legal info stickies
AR Stickies (just because it's such a popular topic)
How to stickies (step by step stuff)
All the flowcharts
etc..........

and then get rid of all the stickies floating around all over the place that few read. People might start reading them

Then any search in that forum would work on those stickies.

For the Marketplace: $1 or $2 to place an ad. Ad time up limited to 15 days, no bumps. If it takes someone longer than a few ads to sell something, look at what you're selling and how much you're asking. If it costs you $10 to sell something and that breaks the bank think of the ad cost as a donation.

Giveaways always Free. WTB ads Free.

No ad packing, one item per ad. You want to sell hundreds or thousands of dollars and can't put up a buck or two to sell it? Get out.

I think we are creating a historical database of the penal code, venues that allow/disallow CCW and other things like that and they can confuse people looking for information outside of the forum. No doubt most people come here through a search outside of Calguns and not because someone told them to come here.

Explanation:

When we post via copy and paste it becomes searchable via the web. I am sure a lot of people do search before asking here but find multiple copies of the penal code going back quite a ways and some very important ones conflict with each other or are no longer accurate.

For example, if you search for bullet button you'll find the exact text of the penal code - as it existed many years ago and without any content that that was then and this is now. Going by the number of threads asking the very same question over and over again it's seems like anyone could start reading the search results outside of CalGuns (or even within it) and see it rather hopeless to get the info as it exists in the present so they ask again. Wash, rinse-repeat.

Instead of quoting things that change but which are very important, why not link to the current citation with a summary of what it says but so anyone that comes by later on gets the current information even some time from now? Granted, links can change but then nothing is often better than out of date or a bad link. If we're worried about some entity tracking who visits, newsflash, if they really want to know they can find out right here, the technology exists to make that determination.

It's not just the penal code, it's any reference including venues where there are metal detectors that reveal you are carrying concealed and so on. I brought this up with the so-called where you can carry thread in the CCW forum. What is today can change tomorrow, better to link to the policy so that what they get is current or at the worst - not there anymore than go by what someone said was good when they visited. Who cares, it isn't now.

Its like quoting reloading data only to find out later on it has changed and there was a mistake that created dangerous load conditions. Someone comes along and aside from the DD thing, uses that info. If you link to the data instead of copy and pasting it then that doesn't happen.

I'm bringing this up because a significant percentage of CalGuns is copies of copies of copies and many of the copies are inaccurate, no longer apply or if someone acts upon that information, creates a legal hazard for them. The solution seems rather simple, link to instead of copy and paste. While that doesn't work for everything especially where just discussion takes place, when it comes to other things it can and probably does matter quite a bit.

Agreed, but you omit the difficulty of getting someone to click on a link.

For example, the link to the 'official' California Code is http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes.xhtml (which, annoyingly, seems to be down just now - another factor that discourages clicking on links!)
ETA Ah, it's back - I had wanted to link to Penal Code, https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/f...nal+Code+-+PEN

The calguns wiki, my own attempt at a repository of facts and explanations, is http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/index.php/Main_Page (In November of 2015, Calguns and that wiki were down, hard, for over a month; when it came back, I no longer had write access, so it has not been updated since. Much of it is fine; parts have fallen behind.)

The 'assault weapon' flowchart is http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf -- in the header bar of every page displayed. It's correct and available, and folks will not, or do not know to, click on it.

My current solution: add language approximately "this is accurate as of [posting date]..." to the text. I have had folks question 10-year-old posts of mine, which were indeed incorrect on the date questioned.

Those who trust reloading info from a single source really violate reloading rules...

Always have a recent copy of reloading data, plus another from a different source. If you have old reloading books, you're stupid if you don't double check with the powder manufacturer's off the web, you're taking a big chance of maybe needing a new face, or worse.

29 bucks a year is only $2.41 a month, pretty cheap & worthwhile If you ask me and helps the cause as well.

How about all those who just post a link, be it to an article, a video or whatever, at least provide some context and your own opinion of the material. If you can't think for yourself ok, at least try. Show everyone you are more than a bot with a link infection.

Default New CCW holders

We're already seeing a fair amount of new/in-progress CCW folks. Makes me wonder if we need to prepare the CCW Forum/Subforums a bit for the onslaught? FAQ, things that will allow them to get their heads around about what's ahead.

I'm no tech guy, but suspect we'll be seeing the proverbial same questions posed one, maybe two thousand times- I don't recall if Jobe has patience to share.

And, what, 4500 are just spammers, and 50 or so are variants on Melvino ...

How come there is no "Beware of buyer/seller" in the WTB forum? Seems to be a lot of burning and attempted burning in that section.

We should make a bumpable thread in each marketplace subforum.

Named "TODAY'S SCAMMERS" and have users bump with new scammer names. Also a good way for mods to easily access which scammers to ban. Many that have been scammed doesn't know the report button or negative i-trader feedbacking, but sure knows how to share the scammers' names.

Divid Marketplace into Northern and Southern California.

I'm sure there is a better place to ask this but why are some threads bold and some not?

Threads with posts you have not read show as bold. Once you read them, 'regular' font.

Came here to post this.

I'm a new user and some deals are very enticing, only to find out they're in LA.

I'd like to be able to see guns I can actually buy this weekend by filtering by area. We can start super simple with "Northern California" and "Southern California"

Searching just on 'marketplace' this is the 22nd post in this thread since 2014 asking for a geographic split. Popular idea.

Now, here's what a member posting in the marketplace forums gets:
Quote:
A title prompt:
Item, Location, Will Ship/No Shipping

and content prompts:
Make:

Model:

Caliber:

Location (city or county):

Price:

Will ship (Y/N):

Other info:

*REMOVE THIS PART BEFORE POSTING*
SELLERS, you may bump this ONE TIME each 24 Hours starting at Midnight
BUYERS, send questions or offers to Seller using Private Messages
Note that 'location' reminders are in both the title and the content.

There are 7 main Marketplace forums. A simple split into North/South would give us 14, not 7.

Where, exactly, is the dividing line between North and South? How do we get members to agree? What do we do about members who post in both North and South?

We can't get members posting in the marketplace to read the default prompts and answer the questions to give us any location. Some don't even change the title to show what it is they might be selling. We can't consistently get posters to obey the bump rule (a lot of threads do get locked or deleted because of that, and yes, mods can see the oh-so-cute 'delete the 3 o'clock post and post again at 4 o'clock' schtick.)

Did you know that just the Handguns marketplace has had over 280 new posts Aug 27 through the first 2 hours of August 28?

Did you know that there are 20 listed volunteer unpaid moderators - listed at the bottom of a forum page - some of whom are retired, and most of the others (possibly excepting me) have lives outside of Calguns?

Did you know Calguns is running vBulletin Version 3.8.11? It's displayed at the very bottom of the forum pages. That's from 2016, and vBulletin says
Quote:
vBulletin 3 End of Life

vBulletin 3 is end of life and will not be receiving future development. Warning: vBulletin 3.8.11 is not compatible with PHP 7.2.0 or higher.
There's no support for anything modifying this version; yes, a new version has been considered - keeping some features that exist in this modified instance of 3.8 is a holdup.

Latest vBulletin is 5.6.8.

At this point, I don't think Kestryll could even hire someone to make any significant changes to the forum software.

Me? I think some kind of application that talks to the Calguns database and enforces the rules before allowing a sale post is the closest to an answer we might get.

TL;DR?

1) The software is old and fragile

2) There will never be enough moderators to read and 'fix' - even if that were possible - badly formed sale posts
