I don’t think it’s a standard.

It’s determined based on his past speeding violations. If someone with a DUI applied, they’ll decide on a different criteria etc. So done on a case-by-case basis.

Again, speaking with an investigator, they’re looking for patterns and issue (or not issue) accordingly.

Unless its written in black and white its: Patterns of activity, views of the dept, views of the person processing the application.

Default Permitium process

I don't know if this has been asked before but I am having trouble getting Permitium to accept my documentation. I tried submitting my scanned (B&W) copies of single page address verification bills and I got a "file too Large" rejection. Same with a scan of my DL and current permit. Has anyone else run into this problem and how did you work around it? Also, if Permitium won't accept Word documents how do you submit your Good Cause statement? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

For the large files, either use a free site to “Reduce File Size” or if on a Mac, it can be done through the Preview window.

For the word doc, click Save As> and use drop down to save as PDF.

9Cal_OC does this also apply to scanned docs? Permitium would not accept single page Png files telling me they were too large.

Anyone that submitted a renewal in late July any timelines on approvals?

Yes.

Since you scanned them and are on a Mac, click to get the drop down menu on the file and select >open with >Preview. Then click File> Export (not Export as PDF) and save the file with the drop down to ‘Reduce File Size’

Something along those lines IIRC.

I wanted to begin by thanking everyone here for their advice and answers on some common questions. It helped me recently secure my CCW in OC! I have the latest timeline posted below for new applications. My advice to anyone new, if you have a solid good cause, get the training & Livescan completed before your interview. I probably could have had my permit 2 weeks sooner, but better late than never!

7/30 - Application Submitted with a majority of required photos/proof uploaded. Initial interview scheduled 12/22/21
8/2 - Received email bumping up my interview to 9/29
9/16 - Received an email to schedule an interview for 9/18
9/18 - Interview
9/18 - Livescan completed
10/4 - Training completed & certificate uploaded
10/7 - CCW approved & paid for
10/14 - CCW permit received

Renewal

6/13/2021 - Submitted Renewal Application
6/22/2021 - E-mailed renewal training certificate
6/23/2021 - Response training certificate received and that certificate has been forwarded to assigned processor.
7/24/2021 - Checked application status via online portal, did not see training certificate in online application, so submitted it through online application portal.
8/20/2021 - Status check via e-mail.
8/23/2021 - Status check e-mail response, told 90-120 day queue and processing taking longer than usual due to high volume of applications.
8/23/2021 - Received an SMS text message regarding payment refund.
9/13/3021 - Status check via e-mail, ask about whether temporary extensions would ever be offered in the future.
9/13/3021 - Status check response, no change due to high volume, answer to question, no.
10/27/2021 - Received SMS text message to check e-mail for further direction. E-mail stated that OCSD wanted more documentation in support of good cause statement.
10/28/2021 - Submitted the requested additional documentation supporting good cause statement.
10/29/2021 - Renewal Approved, notified by both SMS text message and e-mail, pending contact by a staff member so I can issue payment over the phone.
11/02/2021 - Called the phone number listed in the renewal approval e-mail, processed application fee payment over the phone. ETD, 3-7 business days. Lady stated that the new effective date on the permit will be 11/05.
11/04/2021 - Received my permit in the mail, but it has an error, missing 2 handguns. *sigh* At least, they’re not the ones I regularly carry. The ones I regularly carry are listed correctly.

My word of advice to everyone, don’t trust response by e-mail that your supporting documents will make their way to the assigned processor. Submit everything through the portal.

Also, when calling in to process the application fee, they stop accepting payment over the phone at 2PM, so call early. Application fee payment processing from 8AM-2PM.

From renewal application submittal to receiving my permit: 144 days

She advised me that I could withdraw my application rather than get a denial, which would obviously damage my chances in the future. I decided it was best to withdraw and apply after 1-2 years of no traffic violations. It really sucks but I hope I’m doing the right thing. I feel like this is the smarter play and I’m lucky I was given the scoop before my interview. Do you all feel I made the correct choice? I am playing it very safe, but this is a permit I very much want and need, I’d rather be smart and wait.
I don't recall if the application asks for citations, or for convictions (can someone confirm? I think this was changed recently?). But for the record, traffic school counts as convictions for OCSD purposes. All traffic school does is wipe points off of your DMV record.

Also, any violation you get in a moving car is a citation/conviction (e.g., seat belt, car pool lane) for OCSD purposes, while not being considered a "moving violation" for DMV point purposes.

Anyway, regarding the timing of your app, obviously the advice of the OCSD representative is far more authoritative than anything we can advise upon.

Per the State official application it asks the following:

8. List all traffic violations (moving violations only) and motor vehicle accidents you have had in the last five years. Use additional pages if necessary.

Default Travel Log Requested

Hi all,

I'm currently in the process of obtaining my CCW for CA, via Orange County. My interview date is 11/17/21. I listed my GC as "hiking, outdoors, etc.". I have plenty of pictures that include myself hiking and backpacking in remote areas of California however, OCSD requested that I obtain a "travel log of areas recently traveled to". I'm a little confused on how to go about this, since I've never used or kept a travel log and I don't generally document each time I visit somewhere, except for maybe a few pictures.

Is this common for others who have used a similar GC as I did?

Thanks.

Also a fitness watch with GPS like most Garmin watches.

I don't know from what you have presented, but perhaps they are just asking for a format for the information that you can fill out now with info from the past. You should be able to re-create your travels and dates from the dates on the pictures and any kind of calendar you keep.

CCW Renewal

8/28: Documentation Uploaded
9/7: Training Completed; Certification Uploaded
10/7: Refund Issued
10/28: Notice Of Approval

Guessing the payment by phone and mailing will happen tomorrow.

Just over two months all said and done. Pleasantly surprised—was thinking I’d be waiting until late December.

I had hiking as my good cause as well. I sent All Trails map screenshots, especially on the portions of the hike where there is no service.

Same question was posed to me. Here is what I did and no questions asked

*Disclaimer - the locations and dates matched my photos.

1. Open word document
2. Title "Travel Log"
3. List travel and GPS cords (Google is your friend)
A. Jawbone Canyon (35.308047, -118.026162) dates: Jan 2020, Feb 2020, April 2020.
B. Holy Jim (33.677806, -117.517050) Visit this location frequently, sometimes a couple times a month.
C. Glamis Sand Dunes,(32.961652, -115.098730)
D. So on and so on
E. Save as PDF and upload to portal

You get the picture - dont over think it. Just make a 'log'. I attached a screenshot of mine.

Cool My OC Renewal Timeline

CCW Renewal

I’ve gone through a couple of renewals and this year was the easiest. I also paid online at the time of submitting my renewal, knowing they would “refund” it. This is typically done when they actually start processing your application so, for me, it’s acts like a beacon.

Yes, I know I waited too long before submitting the renewal, as my license was expiring on 07-16-2021. I applied for renewal 55 days in advance, instead of the required 90 days. At any rate, here is my timeline for reference…

05-22-2021 Completed renewal application online (paid online), keeping three guns on the license

09-21-2021 Payment refunded (ah-ha! They must be now working on my app!)

10-06-2021 Received email requesting a copy of my current CCW and my training certificate. This went to my junk/spam mailbox and I didn’t see it until five days later.

10-11-2021 Submitted a copy of my current CCW license and started to book a training class

10-18-2021 Submitted training certificate

10-19-2021 CCW license renewal approved! (received email stating so). Received phone call from OCSD and paid the app fee over the phone. Said the license would be mailed out and to expect it in about 5-7 days.

10-22-2021 Received physical CCW license (card) in the mail

Summary: 153 total days, including five days of an email just sitting in my junk/spam folder, and also for waiting to take the recurrent training (which added another seven days).

Scroll up 5 or 6 posts. Our start to finish timelines were nearly identical.

They did say they wanted to approve handsome men as quickly as possible in the approval letter, so maybe our genetics put us over the edge. Don’t know what that says about the guys waiting 5, 6, 7 months but my heart goes out to them.

From one handsome man to another, all the best.

Update: finally got my approval yesterday exactly 1 mo after my permit expired... I sent an email yesterday morning inquiring about my status and then received a text msg and email confirming my renewal approval later in the day...now just have to wait for the phone call to pay and the mail out... I think mine got overlooked but much appreciate OCSD professionalism in handling my case ASAP after my second inquiry... good luck to those still in limbo

i accept this explanation.

I wonder if i would have had to wait the ~60 day if I just submitted my docs/pics the day they asked. the request sat for a month because I got busy.

Thanks.
I had to do the same…just add the dates and location on your pictures. That’s what I did and I was just recently approved for my CCW. Paid last Friday and they’ll be sending it out tomorrow Monday.

I would like to have everything done by my interview in late January so wanted to make sure I'm doing things right!
1. Sign up for a training class (thinking about going with Artemis Defense Institute) in December. Upload the certificate after the training.
2. Get live scan done from the list provided by the CCW website (looks like I can go to the Fullerton PD for live scan). Only thing I have to fill out are the parts highlighted in yellow, correct?

Can't go wrong with Artemis. If you travel out of CA at all consider doing multi-state. It costs extra but you walk out their door with everything you need for AZ, UT, and/or FL. They will roll your prints, take your pics... very convenient.

In past runs of their CCW class they have picked one or two people to go through their VirTra 300 while everyone watches the scenario and the debrief. Interesting and thought-provoking. Obviously they want to sell you additional training; in years past, Black Friday deals have been available for around half price. In my experience, their instructors are very good, and with ammo priced as dearly as it is, what they offer is now much more competitive.

I have even taken family members there for training in the VirTra 300 and it was excellent. A great experience.

No idea regarding your second question, it has been a while since I had to deal with that. Sorry...

So I've had a few renewals and this year has been the longest wait time.

License expiration date 10.22.21

7.18.21 submitted application
7.19.21 documents submitted
7.31.21 training submitted
8.25.21/9.12.21 password reset to check status
10.11.21 reached out to CCWPermits@ocsd.org on status. Am told timeframe is 90-120 days and they are back up with influx of submissions and COVID.
10.12.21 replied with a thank you.
11.11.21 no word yet. Payment has not been refunded or anything.
12.5.21 payment refunded.

Website status changed from "assigning to processor" too "assigned".

Just got mine, new applicant. 6 months to the day, start to finish.

To serve as an additional data point,

w/o 05/16 applied, interview w/o 10/10
w/o 10/03 first update - requested livescan and additional documentation.
w/o 10/10, interview - reviewed application, confirmed answers and went over some common questions.
w/o 10/24, class & qualification.
w/o 11/07, uploaded training certification.
w/o 11/14. received permit in the mail.

Really appreciate that OCSO is issuing CCW's.

It should be fine to do the livescan and training before the interview date, correct? And as for the livescan, do I just follow the instructions on their website (print out the form and go to any of the authorized livescan places)? Thanks!

You can do the livescan. I'm just a moron and didn't realize the livescan request form is literally the first page of the packet you print out at the end of your application. I had to ask where to get the form when they asked (it's on their site). The trainer I use requests you have approval before taking the class and qualifying.

Practically though, I didn't want to spend any money until I heard something back, in case my application was rejected outright.
