It's Gotta be the Shoes!
Anyone remember the Jordan Nike commercials?
What shoes you guys wearing for USPSA? I thought of football cleats. Good on the hard dirt we have up here in the Valley but horrible on any wood planks or other similar surface. Also, molded cleats are not the most comfortable shoes. Tried trail running shoes. Much more comfortable but not the best traction when bursting out, pivoting or coming to a stop. Used some hiking shoes. OK traction but way too heavy. A friend, who is also my USPSA sensei and an amazing salsa dancer, suggested I try turf cleats. After a lot of searching online, I found these. They're baseball turf cleats. Have read numerous reviews online that say they get really good traction on a hard dirt infield. I've worn them around the house and they're super comfy and great traction on all surfaces. Tested them a bit in the backyard and they seem to get good traction on decomposed granite. Curious to see how they perform at my next match. Sent from my SM-G930U using Tapatalk Last edited by anonymouscuban; 08-15-2019 at 7:41 PM.. |

I was using a similar trail runner made my La Sportiva. I still found myself sliding around at times.

i use the mt610 shoe from new balance.
guess now it is called the T610v5 at least according to zappos. good all around traction. but it will still sip under certain conditions though. i don't think any shoe will be slip-free on the range.

When I first started I used trail runners (Salomon). But those wore out pretty quickly as they weren't dedicated to just USPSA.
I decided to get a dedicated pair of cleats: alpha sharks. Good traction (I guess. I mean, I haven't slipped on hard exits or rounding corners) on hard packed dirt, soft dirt/mud, and gravel. Can't really comment on grass/turf. The few times that I was on wooden planks or walkways were okay from what I remember--even after a little bit of rain. They're not the most comfortable out of the box, so I threw in a pair of gel insoles and that helped. They also don't breathe well. I thought about punching a couple of holes on the side (during Golden Bullet 2018 and Top Gun Championship 2019, but they're ready for retirement. Which means I'm in the market for new cleats. I'll definitely check these out. |

Same, one of the few that have a real wide option
No shoe will be perfect for every surface. Overall performance across the majority of surfaces I have encountered has been best with the trail runner style. |

I wear Salomon Men's Xa Pro 3D GTX Trail Runner (has ankle support) locally and Inov-8 Mudclaw out of state on slick conditions on grass.

That's what I like about them. They give good traction on the dirt we see at most of the ranges here in California but also stick to fault lines or when you have to stand or walk on wood planks and other surfaces. Where cleats and other shoes get really sketchy.

how long until those orange tabs just break or tear off? I think the gravel or rocks are a little more abrasive than the dirt on a ball field. You will have to do a gear update after a few matches.
BTW, if you make M while wearing them, I am in for sure.. |

Solomon Speedcross 3s. They only last like a season, but they're like suction cups on your feet.
I also used the Solomon Fellraiser for about 2 years, and the harder rubber certainly last longer, but they're not as grippy. |
