Wannabe cops? Real cops carry reloads off duty too. Guess they all become mall ninjas when they are off duty?

Since you are carrying a Shield, the standard Leatherman holster makes a great magazine carrier. Nobody ever notices it.

With a short single stack, I use a leather carrier made for a bigger gun that'll still allow for enough of the top to stick out to grab but conceals most of the body. That way even if people see it, 99.474228994% won't even pay attention to it.

I havent been on here in forever, mostly cause I moved out of state but now I am back, I was looking at the classifieds. I saw this thread and was reminded of the other reason. Its like watching a fight about “Is it FDE or Tan”...

To the OP, carry what you feel you need. No one is going to know what you need, that includes you.

You stated you have other stuff you carry, so evaluate what you actually may need vs “luxury”. A spare shield mag is very small so if that’s a make it or break it for EDC you are carrying too much stuff anyway.

I just renewed and took my shield off my permit in exchange for my P365. Capacity matters regardless of what YouTube or CalGuns say. When I carried my shield, I carried an 8 in the gun and a 10(8+Hyve base) in my mag pouch. If my wife and kid is with me I carry a 2nd 10 in a NeoMag in my support side.

I carry a blade and small flashlight and a TQ but all that is secondary to the defensive tool. Will I need 20-30 rounds, hopefully not but if I did, I will not be running dry.

For reference I have probably signed off on a lot of the SoCal guys CCW and see thousands of guns come through. I see dozens of failures every class. This last class, a student came through with some aftermarket metal glock mags he was sold as great mags. The mags lasted about 3 revolutions of shooting and then shortly after they blew out the bottom. Apparently they can’t take the pressure of +p ammo. So do you need 2 mags in an average gunfight, maybe not but you are literally gambling with your life on such a small decision.

OP, I used to carry a 5 shot revolver and 5 extra, or my Shield with an extra mag and felt fine. Due to the times we live in now, and all that is happening, I now carry a G-19, and at least a couple extra mags, as well as a BUG with extra mags. My workday can change in a moment though and I have found myself in some VERY "interesting" parts of town. I'll carry extras

Its easy to get lazy and not carry extra ammo. I would like to say I "always" do but there are times when I just step out the door to do some yard work, work on truck and well, the threat level is pretty darn low. In my opinion general awareness is far more valuable for the average person, no matter "carrying" or not. Training, at least annually with a good instructor and practicing monthly is minum. Carrying extra mag/ammo is good but ability to evaluate and act quickly is more important. I am an old guy, been carrying long time and have no hero aspirations, just living out my days having absolutley as much fun as possible!

"Real cops" are still sworn officers when off duty with a responsibility to run TOWARDS the danger. CCW holders are NOT. We are not duty bound or expected to run towards the danger. Irrespective of that, I stand by history and experience (collective experience, not my own). Gunfights (even for officers) SELDOM, (if ever) involve mag changes (even if you run TOWARDS the danger). NO need to carry extra mags. If your first mag jams you still won't have time to do a mag change from under concealment, especially since your first reaction (rightly so) will be to get the gun back into the fight first. After all of that, it will be long over by the time you get the jam cleared, the old mag out and the new mag in an then chambered.

Same argument says don't even carry a CCW at all, right?

Sounds like a reprise of 'bad guys are Superman'.

With a spare mag - small chance to fix and continue the fight with that gun.

Without a spare mag - no chance.

I'll take "small" over "no", thank you.

You don't exclude something because of low probability, you carry something for the unexpected, same reason we carry daily, have insurance policies, a spare quart of oil on a road trip or 2 boxes of cereal in the pantry.
Mags are small, lightweight and generally not obtrusive to carry.

If I only prepared for the expected, my duty belt and gear bag would only contain sunflower seeds and Gatorade and maybe some extra TP for those bathrooms that are not maintained well.

A question about your reasoning; A gunfight is a gunfight, how does it matter if it's in your driveway or in another state, you aren't going to have time to go grab another mag.

The feeding device is the most important component of your semi-auto.
If it fails, the gun fails and you fail.

Had no ideas that carrying extra mag or two would consider to be a mall ninja or cop wannabe.
IMHO, I rather have extra...

A gun with one mag is better than nothing, a gun with two mags is better than one, a gun with three mags is better than two, a gun with four mags.....

There's no limit to how far you can prep, and it still might not be enough. Sometimes I carry an extra, usually I leave it in the car. I could carry five guns and ten mags and be shot before I draw. So many people are so focused on a potential shooting scenario, yet they take countless other risks in their lives that are probably more likely to kill them.

I don't live in fear. I prep to the extent that it's not a hassle, and live knowing I could die any day in any number of scenarios. If my one mag malfunctions (what are the odds it would happen that one time, I've never had one go bad yet) then maybe it's my time to go.

It's not like that actually.

I carry enough for a fight with 1 backup magazine at all times. That's what I'm comfortable with if I needed to fight with the gun.

When I go a little further away from home, I pack extra because that's how I am. I carry some snacks, water, and extra magazine. It's a very abbreviated version of a get home bag, without the bag.

So it isn't that I have time to go home to grab another magazine in a fight closer to home, but it's my way to have some extra stuff to be able to get home if SHTF when I'm far away.

Default Spare mag recommended

A spare mag recommended in case you encounter a malfunction or in the rare event you run dry. Better safe than sorry imo. I also have a shield and carry 8 in the gun and a 10 round backup mag in a Neomag.

I carry an extra 15 round mag with my Glock 19 so I have minimum 31 rounds available. If I carry my shield I carry at least one extra magazine, especially since the shield .40 only holds 7 rounds per mag. Shield mags are thin so a Neo mag carrier is a great option.

depends on the firearm, When I carry my P7M8, I carry an extra 8 round mag,
for my PPQM2 9mm, (It holds a 17 round mag in the well), I don't carry an extra mag.

Saw an AMA with the guy from active self protection a while back. He said he has watched over 15000 videos of defensive shootings and never seen one where a spare magazine would have changed the outcome.

I do carry a spare mag a decent amount of the time but I am a firm believer that the rounds you have in the gun are what you get and that you are better off carrying a larger gun with more capacity than extra mags.

Think about this. Many people say they carry a spare magazine in case they have a double feed. But in a shootout by the time you realize your jammed, tap rack dead trigger again, then strip the magazine and cycle the slide and then start shooting again, you either had plenty of time to simply run away, or you have been shot.

My opinion of course so it's worth what you paid for it.

Even if the original shoot is done, if you're alone, a good practice is to do a tactical reload until you're sure it's done. I never assume the original encounter is the end all and I can holster with a partial magazine and go back to condition yellow.

I carry a wheel gun.

Four or five, reload strips 5 rounds each. Still feel naked.

Depends what you are comfortable with.

For short trips around here (Costa Mesa/Newport Beach) I do not carry an extra mag. If I am driving through Los Angeles I carry two extra mags in my car.

Especially during 2020.

Lol, for parts of LA you might need a few bandoliers and another case in the trunk.

Respectfully, I understand your point. And I agree that more is USUALLY better. But having more comes with costs of weight, convenience, and displacing other things from pockets.

I'd say there IS a practical limit. There are diminishing returns of benefit as to how many extra magazines are better.
