That’s a bummer. I’m wondering if it’s more useful to space range visits out more, but still shoot the same amount per session.

Usually shoot about. 100-200 9mm ,50-100 22s. And 50 .45s at an indoor range. When i hit the desert it really varies but at usually 250 9mm. 100-200 .223 50 .308
100+ 7.62x39 and a maybe 50 rounds of something random .17hmr 5.7x28 or 30-06 30-30 etc

This is the advice I have been giving to my friends who have had some practice time in the indoor range.
Join a IDPA or USPSA weekly match in your area, for the following reasons.
1. Majority of the clubs welcome new shooters to the sport and can teach you proper gun handling and range rules when competing.
2. You are practicing to shoot with the correct pistol grip, shooting posture, sight picture and trigger control while having a great time.
3. learning to move and shoot at the same time or shoot behind cover, this is applicable in daily life if your in trouble.
4. Shooting 200 or 300 rounds in competition is more gratifying that standing in the indoor booth punching holes. This will be a good gauge on how you develop as a shooter.
5. You will learn faster because you will make friends and meet a lot of seasoned shooters that will be happy to help you improve your shooting.
These are what I have experienced when I started shooting and I would like to pass it on.

Yeah, I'm very interested in IDPA to start. I just want to get some of the basics down, then find a time when ammo is more available for the larger amounts I will need to compete.

I think I'm going to get into Airsoft in the backyard, since there doesn't seem to be a major run on that yet. I can still afford 5000 BBs for $15 and green gas for $20!

I have one similar to this that my wife bought somewhere

https://www.harborfreight.com/EZ-Rea...iABEgJ1-_D_BwE

And also one similar to this.

https://www.acehardware.com/departme...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

They both work pretty well, although like many things, I wish the handles were a few inches longer (I am 6' tall...most things seem to be made for shorter people).

A friend has a 'nut picker'. It works great for picking up pistol brass.

http://www.brassmower.com/

SoCal local source:

RELOAD
1739 S DOUGLAS RD STE ANAHEIM, California
714-767-9956

It's a little on the expensive side; $61 MSRP, but it will last forever.

Well made, and made in USA.

OMG, we NEVER shoot less than 800/range session, but we NEVER go when it's hot and will skip about 2.5 months of the heat.

22lr we generally plow through 500 minimum, .38SPL/.357 Mag like 100 minimum, 9mm 200-600. .223/5.56 can vary a lot but generally >150.
Dillon XL 650 FTW.

Nice! How many of you go on each range trip? Is it 800/each per range session, or split between 2+ of you?

Given current availability and pricing, 800 is easily 3-4 separate trips for me right now.

While I was shooting 3 gun it was nothing to go through 500-700 rounds every weekend between 9mm, 45, 556, and 12g just me. If its just a range day with friends 400 rounds is common. 100 rounds per person at least.

Right now, I am limiting both my trips to the range as well as the ammo.

I focus on shooting about 50 rounds of 9mm, and I try to make each shot count. If I spend enough energy on focusing, then usually by the end of the fifty rounds, I've had my fill.

Since prices/availability have gone nuts I am sticking to shooting 22lr and 12 gauge... 200-200 22lr and 25-50 12g

I have definitely been focusing on fundamentals over the past few months. Mostly stance, grip, aim, and the like. I don’t know if I will ever shoot a single hole at 7 yards, but my groups are almost always within 2” now, except for my first 20 rounds, done ‘cold’ with a magazine change. I tend to shoot low for my first few shots, due to recoil anticipation, then the shots move toward the center of the target.

I do like the idea of dot torture, because it will allow me to bring the gun from a ready position and focus on a more narrow target area.

Dry fire has really helped me on all aspects as a beginner, except for recoil. I’m still a sucker for that at the beginning of each range session.

As a beginner, I put about 200 rounds through two 9mm pistols. Given the scarcity of ammunition right now, I’m loathe to shoot more, even though I know I would love to spend more time at the range.

Do you typically go through drills? I’m visiting an indoor on weekdays when I’ve scheduled myself a little free time, and I have been going every two weeks. So I’m not allowed to try any drills using a holster or moving around. So I have been focusing on my fundamentals. I would love to go to outdoor ranges more often, but it’s hard to get back to the office and be presentable afterwards.
Greatly depends on what I end up taking to the range. Pre-Covid I usually brought 50 rounds of .22 LR, 100-200 rounds of pistol ammo, and 60-120 rounds of rifle ammo (so averaging 210-370 rounds a trip), with rounds being less on the pistol or rifle side if I was shooting revolvers or manually-operated rifles instead of semi-auto's.The rimfire ammo would usually also get discarded and replaced with additional pistol or rifle ammo if I was bringing a firearm to zero, so I would dedicate time I would normally be spending shooting rimfire to make sure I properly zeroed the firearm.

Major exception to the above was if I brought a carry gun to practice with, in which I set aside 200 rounds of 9mm before I added anything else. 50 rounds for shooting the FBI Qualification Course cold turkey, 100 rounds to practice correcting deficiencies found on the "cold" run, and then wrapping with 50 rounds to retake the course of fire before moving onto anything else.

As for the naysayers of the "pray and spray" crowd, as long as I'm putting all my shots on the steel plate I could care less if I fired one shot or dumped a 30 round magazine into it as fast as my trigger finger can go, its when misses start piling up that I'd start to have issues with people doing that.

I typically shoot about 120-160 rounds of 556 or 308 and about a box of 100 rounds or so for whatever pistol I bring.

I always bring a box or two with me to the range just in case I can't sponge a couple hundred rounds from my shooting neighbors.

I usually go through 3 boxes (25rd) of 12ga and 150-200 rounds of 9mm within a 3hr range session. 223 at least 50 rounds.

200 is also a goodly number of .22 as well, blowing those through 10rd. Ruger Mk.III mags - although I suppose I could shoot more.

I have four (4) 26rd. Black Dog mags for my AR .22, and they are a BEOTCH to load! In my free state, 30rd. PMags are more crucial, and as the AR.22 s a training tool, I didn't want a FORTUNE tied up in those mags. 200rds. is about the limit of my PATIENCE per range trip with it!

For handguns, I usually shoot 100-150 rounds of .22 LR and then 50-100 rounds of whichever centerfire caliber that I brought that day.

100 rounds per center fired pistols, 100-200 22LR. Was going to an indoor range 2-3 times a month, until I got lead poisoning. Rifle outdoor range time ammo will very depending if testing new reloads or just plinking or.......

I worry about lead poisoning. Makes me use deLead wipes right after and wash my clothes separately after range trips. We wear masks right now during the pandemic anyways. But I’m going to an indoor range twice a month right now.

I was in the range yesterday... These were my ammo consumption:
  1. G21SF 45ACP - Dot Torture at 5-yards - 50-rds
  2. G34 9mm - Dot Torture at 7-yards - 50-rds
  3. G34 9mm - "50/50" drill at 7# , 10#, 15# and 20# - 60-rds
  4. G21SF 45ACP - Head shot from the beep at 10-yards - 25-rds

185-rds total of handgun ammo.... In about an hour.

Nice! I'm desperately sourcing .22 LR right now for my next range trip, hopefully next week. Then I may go down to 100 rounds of 9mm and 100 rounds of .22LR to work on drills, like dot torture. Just working on my fundamental skills right now. Finally like my grouping at 25 yards when I slow fire.

I'll worry about speed when I have good fundamentals (and easier, cheaper access to ammo).

Usually about 200 of 9mm, and a box of .22lr. I warm up with the .22, then shoot some of the 9mm, then probably the .22 again.

Well, there are other fundamentals drills that you can work on dry without ammo nor the need to pull the trigger.

Quote:
3 targets, edge to edge, 10-yards out

1. At the beep, draw and get a sight picture on each target. The sight picture should be enough for you to make the shot. Do NOT press the trigger (you can prep it, though)! Measure your par - this will be your baseline. As emphasis, do not rush, but do not go slow either.
2. Move the targets apart (not dramatically, say a few inches). Repeat the drill.
3. Once you can easily meeting the par time established in #1 - move the targets apart again, until you are MAX out.

Do Left to Right, Right to Left, Middle-Left-Right, etc.

The objective here is to (1) be able to recognize a good enough (not perfect) sight picture before transitioning and (2) learn to use to eyes to lead the gun.
Be careful of this - move the eyes FIRST (lead with the eyes), then the gun should follow. (Wide transitions is a different story, though).

This is to speed up the eyes - we can mostly shoot only as fast as our eyes would allow. This is one drill I wish was introduced to me WAY WAY earlier on!

1K rounds easy over a weekend of Tactical training prob 3 times a year.....With ammo prices being the way they are and now that I've changed occupations (to one that doesn't provide training ammo)...don't think I can afford to do that anymore. Seem like I'm just dry firing and visualizing nowadays. Its not only about the money but the inconvenience. CA...sucks...no shipping? Then Walmart stops selling? With Covid...Local gunstores are no help either. Only place in town with ammo is LAX ammunition and most of their stuff are reloads, are higher priced. Don't blame them...its the environment and future.

Ii also have a .22 version of probably every pistol are rifle I own....so I can also train on the mechanics....not quite the same, but 22 is something I bought in plenty......
