Anybody have a good recipe for 125gr plated .38 special?
All the recipes I find are for the same powder I was using 30 years ago (when I stopped reloading).
What's the new powder all the cool kids are using? |

I'm in the same boat. Stopped reloading for 30 or more years.
Guess what? It's still about the same powders. Bullseye, be86 is cleaner. Unique is now titegroup which is a bit hotter IMHO. Dots are the same. Full mag loads are still h110 or 2400. I still run unique and bullseye for 38s. Same recepies from my uncle and dad's notepad too. Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk

Not hardly a kid but I could help with DATA or INFORMATION but you just like being cute. Next you will call bullets. Pills. But then you know it all. I only started reloading in the 1960' and have been ever since.

For my xtreme 125gr plates bullets I’ve been loading with either 4.3 grains titegroup or 5.2gr of vectan prima v with a Winchester or sellier and bellot small pistol primer at 1.445 oal. Bother will get me around 850 fps out of a 4in revolver.

I don't shoot that bullet. But have been using Bullseye and HP-38/W231 for a looooong time.
Recipes for both on Hodgdon's site. I'd follow the cast recipes. Plated bullets engrave closer to cast. BE86 is essentially Unique with a flash suppressant. Good powder if you're looking for more velocity/performance but on the slow side for range fodder.

I use CFE pistol for 125gr plated and jacketed 38 special and +p loads... Hodgdon.com has plenty of loads for it.. Clean and meters like water... Also use it for lite 357 mag loads... I also tried working up BE-86 and it was good powder,,, but it had more recoil snap in my j-frame and 6 inch in my opinion...
Cheers... |

Here’s my contribution Ysr Racer:
Berry’s flat point 125 grains, 6 grain Unique, primer (win, cci, or wolf), mixed case, C.O.L 1.435”. It’s a +P load. 5.7 grains is the minimum. Cannot go below that per Speer manual. |

You're a shotgunner..... you must have some 700x laying around. Works well for me and the other cool kids I hang with.

3.5-4gr bullseye.
If you look in most powder manuals, they’ll have several listed. 38spl is really one of the easiest rounds to load for. You really can’t under load it (within reason), most powders give consistent and similar velocity, and you don’t need to worry about feeding and cycling in an auto.

But you can get all the info you like from Hodgdon, which includes IMR, Winchester and Hodgdon powders, Nosler posts load data, so does most other powder manufacturers. But this crap of asking for load data from a bunch of people on a board. Sure you can just fill the case with red dot and a nice day. |

A few weeks ago, I just finished my last of HP-38 that I bought in the late 1970's. So I was not only using a recipe I developed in the 70-early80's, I was even using the same can of powder. I purchased 23 1lb. cans of HP-38 when a local gun store closed up, I remember the price well as I bought all he had, a buck a can. Nothing wrong with the old powders, they are still around because they are good.
Now that I am out, I will likely go to Trail Boss that I use in all my other calibers except 9mm. I don't like having too many types of powders around, so I try to stay with a few for pistol and a few for rifle. I did buy some Power Pistol the other day, because that is what is called for non-lead bullets in the recipe I have, I will try it but I really like Trail Boss these days. .38 special, 4.1gr Trail Boss with 125gr bullet works for me, I go down to 3.5gr Trail Boss for powder puff loads for my daughter. Thanks very much. Can you run a 158 Berry's plated flat point with 231 powder? I loaded some up at 4.2, and they shoot nice. But I have no idea how fast they're going. |

I am VERY NEW on reload stuff. Here what I used .
- Powder , TRUEBLUE Ramshot, I pick this powder because on the jar it said "pistol powder" . - Bullet : BERRY, 38 Cal (.357), 125 Grn FP, #95022, Copper Coated - Load: 5.7Grn and 5.9Grn - OAL = 1.445" Attached are the trial test at indoor local range with Henry Bigboy 38SPL/357MAG rifle, 17 yards, 3" target (1) On the right is 16rds new ammo, on the left is 50 rds of my reload ammo, you see some flies away , I do not know that was me or ammo ? (2) On the next day I reload with 5.9 Grn, and trial test again, you can see 2 big holes outside the target, and some small holes are for .22LR pistols So my conclusion is the recipe/formula for 5.7 or 5.9 are OK and the rest is "the Indian capable " Last edited by newbie1234; 10-13-2019 at 10:04 PM.. |

Intruder/violent attacker "pills",
"Recipe", the closest thing to cooking men did... Alliant still stating "recipe", right on their web site: Most powder MFRs publish load data on their web site (generally conservative, for .357 Mag ), based on what you are using. But before buying a powder, I usually double-check I usually research powders in Lee's Modern Reloading to see if I can use a powder on multiple calibers (in my case typically .38 SPL, and 9mm at a minimum), for sanity-sake, and as close to universal-use as possible, as buying in bulk saves money per LB. I remember loading up some 148gr wadcutters in .38 SPL at the minimum load, and I could see them flying through the air... My daughter LOVED the soft shooters, but they were way too light of a load. LOL "Alliant still stating "recipe", right on their web site"
yeah but they suck., so I say "loads" but to each his own the more of us gun guys the better. Anyway 3.5 gr 231 with a 125 is very soft kind like a 22LR type deal very fun to shoot |

So I bumped both of them up. Now I'm at 4.2 of 231 behind a Berry's 158, and 4.7 of 231 behind a Berry's 125. Both of them have the "snap" I'm looking for. Once I chrono them, I'll post the results. |
