Default Difficulties transitioning to a long slide handgun...

I was given a long slide kit for my VP9. In trying it out...I find I tend to shoot high with it as compared to my std VP9. I have a friend who has had the same problem with the same VP long slide kit. I have a couple friends who experienced the same issues going To the G34/35 from shorter barreled glocks.

I have considered that it may also be attributed to the adjustable rear sight being too high but it is already at max down.

A one else have similar experiences or ideas?

If you are tweaking the rear sight max down isnt that going to make you shoot high?

I would ignore the sights and go back and forth between your compacts and long slides to get a "feel" for them, i could see the longer recoil impulse throwing off a quick double tap, but first shots should be right on.

I went thru this with going from HK and brownings, to a glock grip that has the canted wrist grip.

You adjust the rear sight where you want your point of impact to move to. Up for up, down for down.

Longer barrel means a few more micro seconds the bullet is in the barrel. More time for the opposing forces to make muzzle rise higher than shorter barrel during recoil.

It's a Newton thing. Need taller front sight.

I think the problem has been located.

If you were adjusting a scope or red dot then the down for up makes sense.

You'll need to calculate which front sight the pistol will need to give the most usable adjustment to the rear. Run the rear sight up to its mid position and shoot a few groups from a rest using 124gn ammo. Then use Dawson's sight calculator to get the proper front sight height. Dawson has front sights for your VP up to .395", either fiber optic or plain.

Pistol/rifles corrective sight movements are easy to remember.

FORS = front opposite / rear same.

OP dropped his rear sight low to move the poi lower and he still hits high.
Move front sight higher to move poi lower.

This is 101 stuff people.

Can't comment on that particular setup, but I have had in the past rear sights bottoming out and not being able to achieve the POI that I wanted.

The only option was to replace the front sight - if you don't want to do calculations yourself, you can use the calculator by, e.g., Dawson Precision. Make sure you put your rear in the middle of its vertical motion when determining how high the gun is shooting. This will give you the ability to adjust up or down to match any future preference for sight picture.

When it comes to adjusting sights, down is up, and up is down, or is it inside out?

Easy visualization: Barrel always points at impact. Sights don't. Which way do you need to move the adjustable sight (front or read - this question is because of the stupid adjustable AR front sight post) to get them to line up?

If the gun shoots high relative to the sights, the rear sight has to move down to get the aligned sights pointing at the impact point.
