Concur. It's reliable and inexpensive; easy to take down (just like a Glock). The trigger is a bit heavy, but smooth and breaks cleanly. For a self-defense/backup gun, the heavier trigger is actually an added safety factor (not that you can ignore proper trigger discipline).

I love when people compare the SD9/ Sigma to the glock..

It is not a glock. No matter what you do to it, it will never be a glock.

Sd9 and fmk are trash gun.

OP, buy either a g19, xd9 c or sc, or a SW shield.

end thread.

There's also the MAP1 pistol from Rock Island which is actually a Tanfoglio Witness. You can get those for around $350.

This is the best one of all mentioned so far.

Yes, I have had them all including more glocks than I would like to admit, and MAPP is the best in the price range. Comes in mid and full size but it ain't gonna make the owner a Navy Seal like glock19 does.

I read Sigma/SD9 was a copy of Glock and is the reason Glock sued S&W and won. Thought I read Glock got a certain $ amount for each SD9 sold.

The SD9VE is just an improved Glock 19. IDK about the FMK haven't really read much on them.

So I took a couple of pictures; gen3 G19 and SD9VE side-by-side.

( pls excuse the dirt and lack of lube! )

Attachment 810948

Attachment 810950

So yeah, there is a reason why S&W got sued way back when. I bet folks can't guess how to remove the slide from the frame on the SD9...

S&W advantages: inexpensive, more DA-like trigger for novice shooters.

Glock advantages: deep aftermarket, better trigger for non-novice shooters, cheaper magazines.

Ergos are always subjective, but the S&W has a really good grip.

Shop around, get an SD9 for $300ish, probably the best CA available pistol for that money. The Smith has been around forever, so consider it a mature design.

If they were the same price, yeah just go Glock. But they aren't.

: shrug :

You ain’t old. You’re just forgetful. No rail is one of the criteria. No rail in the Shield.

Like many others have already stated; Glock 17 or 19 depending on which feels better in your hand. I personally prefer the 17

Assuming the model number XDD9801 is really XD9801, yes it is on the roster.

A lightweight compact gun for a hide out gun. Then I'm going to slap a light on it, and defeat the lightweight aspect as well screw up the balance of the gun. Make perfect sense.

Rail mounted light's and night sights are the two biggest gadget's the industry has sold people on. Way too many people use the light to "search" violating rule 2. Using a handheld light and a gun isn't all that difficult, and it allow's you to lead with the light, instead of leading with the gun.

I have a weapon-mounted light, but I leave it off and then also carry a handheld flashlight and hold it FBI style.

G19 or 17. Gen 1 & 2 don't have rails. You want a Gen3 17, 19 or 26. Anything newer is off roster and doesn't have any functional reason to pay a premium. I assume "for a backup gun" means when SHTF then it's no time for cheap/affordable/etc then you want 100% reliability and Glock is your best choice.

Boring as it sounds if starting from scratch G19. If not then stick with whatever polymer gun system you already have. If you have an xd9, shield, sdv9 etc stick with that why go buy a bunch of mags for a new setup if you already have mags for your current system.
A bonus if you're starting from scratch and go Glock 9mm you're all set to get a PC carbine or an AR9 that takes Glock mags.

If I were looking for a very affordable 9mm handgun to stash somewhere as a backup gun, what CA roster guns should I be looking at? The gun does not need to be awesome, but should be reasonably reliable. Preferably lightweight, subcompact or compact, and must have a rail for a light (no workarounds, it must have a rail). Thanks for any suggestions!

You're right,and that's a good thing.

I own half a dozen Glocks in various calibers, I'd rather shoot my SD9VE with the Apex trigger.
$329 for the gun, $25 for the trigger and springs and as an added bonus it actually feels like I'm holding a gun and not a misshapen piece of lumber.

I've shot all of these, own all of them except the FMK and there's not a bad one in the bunch.

I had no idea Apex made a trigger for those. Interesting & enticing! Was thinking of that as a cheap backup.

I know you said 9mm for certain but if you wanted to keep it as cheap as possible I would parrot what someone said above about LE buyback Glock 22 & 23 being common right now. I’d also caution you, if the two I bought, one was good to go and the other needed some minor parts straight from the distributor. In the end it worked out as it needed like 14$ in parts and the distributor knocked like $90 off the price due to the issue.

Just get a duplicate of your primary. No point in stocking different mags for a backup. Might as well be able to use the same mags as your primary, at least, that’s how I see it.

I like the xd series, im doing a ppt on an xd9 in a couple of days a buddy found an xdm and sold me his for a very fair price. Anothet buddy just picked up a used sd9ve at a pawn shop, really want to shoot that one. I tried the trigger and it was very rough but he didnt seem to mind. I told him about the apex trigger if it begins to bothet him.

You will love the XD! I had an XD-m 45 4.5" and really liked it. We bought an XD-45 4" Service model and oddly, that fit my hand just a smidgen better! Sold the XD-m and bought an XD-9 to go with the XD-45. Looking at the specs between the guns, you wouldn't think that a few hundredths of an inch would make a difference, but it sure does!

Not sure if it was just luck of the draw, but the trigger on the XD-9 is incredibly light, even when straight out of the box! (Roughly 6.125 lbs vs 6.5 for the XD-45).

During Freedom Week, I bought 4 standard capacity mags for my XD45 and 2 for my XD9. I also bought a 13 round for an XD9 Subcompact (that I don't own yet). Nice to have a little extra firepower.

Anyways, sorry for the thread derail, just chiming in with some XD love!

This! More realistic, ive yet to see a glock used under 400.
Smith's as low as 225 used and px4 around 375 used.
Even the xd doesnt drop 350 used from whatbive seen.
Honestly if it's indispensable get a glock if not the s&w.

I would get an M&P Shield. Even though it doesn't have a rail, you can mount a TLR-6 light on it.
