Well, well, well. Just got off the phone with my bud up in Idaho, and guess what? He really wants my Sako Finnbear[.270]. So, we be making a "trade", if you will. Dylan gets the Sako, I get the Henry of my choice! Hot dog!!
It won't happen till I get up there in June; I don't care. Plenty of guns to shoot till then. But, he's a heck of a lot younger than me and he wants that Sako. I no longer hunt, so, this deal is good. |

Holy smokes! I don't think he's about to go there. Naw, a Big Boy Steel, 20" round barrel, probably .41 mag. I have time to decide. I'm just glad Dylan wanted the Sako, as now, it will get used. He's only 35, so he has some miles left in him. And he hunts a lot.

Holy hunkz o' heavy metal, Batman! Nobody wants to drag that heavy Henry around. We're the Mojave Lever Crew! and we dig CARBINES, not Kentucky Rifles.
I pick up my 16.5" stainless .44 Mag in the mornin! Longest 10 days ever.

I would need a small crane to lift that puppy to shoot! If I decide .41 mag, then Henry[steel]. .45 Colt, Henry or Marlin. Blued.

I brought my new 1894 SBL home today, and, Holy Toledo, Ohio... I had inspected the carbine's open action at my dealer, but it wasn't until I disassembled the receiver that the truth was revealed. I don't know how I missed the burred edge along the ejector groove during the initial look, but the inside of the receiver has burrs on every machined edge, small machining debris, chaff from polishing (after the receiver had been assembled?)... and I've just spent a rather considerable period of time today with some micro files, some stone, and some oil... shjeeeze Louise.
Good news is that progress has been made, and now the interior of the receiver looks how it should have looked after final assembly at the factory. If only it were 1950 again... none of this laborious nonsense would have been necessary on my end, or the 1930s, when a company like Smith&Wesson hand-lapped revolver barrels! But, I digress... While the gun's action cycled fine, all those burrs and chaff and stuff would have made cleaning the gun a nightmare. Better to file those burrs away and clean it all out now. I did a bunch more work to it (took the pic rail off - XS Sights sent me a shorter front sight and screws), have to walk the dog around the block, then reassemble the carbine. Pics later! or in a new thread.

Already have 357 in 16". A 20" will be a refreshing addition in the 1892 platform. A no brainer.
Also 45colt, 30-30, 35Rem in the house. This should cover all the small stuff until stepping up to a 45/70. -g

G-man, in my experience, my Rossis, while crude when compared to a Miroku Winchester, never needed any de-burring. I'd never needed to do it, either, to any of my blued carbines, although I did stone them for a lil' slickin'. This is the first stainless lever carbine, and apparently, time is money and FreedomGroup/Marlington isn't paying the hands on the factory floor for detailing.
I'm sure had I simply run a patch through this bore the rifle would have worked fine. I on the other hand wanted to strike up a relationship with my new gal, and I gave her undercarriage a bit o' "How's yer father". I have reassembled it but was unable to get the cap off the front of the mag tube... so I wasn't able to swab the magazine bore. Other than that! it cycles 8 rounds of .44 Mag, both 240 and 300 grain, flawlessly, as fast as I can run that leever. I don't know if I'll get pics up tonight or tomorrow... Quote:

What I have done per Steve's Gunz is to remove the wood and drench down the action with brake cleaner, re-lube, work the action for an hour or 500x and drench again with brake cleaner, then re-lube and work the action some more. All 3 were pretty slick after that. Apples, is that new Marlin and new production gun from 2018? I hope they aren't slipping up and letting the QA go down hill again.

Brand spankin' new. There just wasn't any attention to detail after machining. Just slop the thing together, test fire it and ship it.
It's ok... I got to know her a little better, and she's cleaned up, all back together with a belly full of .44 Mag 300 grain Hornady XTPs. Here's a family photo... From the top: 20" 1894 FG (.41) 18.5" 1894CS357 16.5" 1894 SBL (.44)

What I will do after the initial test fire will be
to clean the action as you have suggested. Some say to use a dry graphite lube and cycle the action many hundreds of strokes. It's really the longer barrel in caliber and older style action I looking forward to. The clean up and upgrades will come later. -g

I'd like to get out to the Mojave before the end of the year. Cole should be GTG after the 20th. Between the 25th and the 31st seems to be the best for us. Looking forward to shooting Apples new Marlin and sighting in the new to me scope on my 1894.
FWIW, anybody looking into reloading should check out the RCBS stuff. There's up to a $175.00 rebate. I'm looking at their RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme Master Single Stage Press Kit for $330.00, after the $100.00 rebate its $230.00. I'm going to see if the boss will get me one for Christmas..

I really liked Tom's Henry with the Weaver scope so I joined the club. It's so easier for me to find the target with a little help.

I'm down for this, and I may make it out there somewhere before that in order to fire-lap this new 1894 SBL. The bore is atrocious. First, I'm going to contact a local barrel specialist to get his opinion on it's condition. If it's deemed "mild", I'll go ahead and build more pressure-lapping .44 and have at it. Because it's a harder stainless alloy, it may take well over 100 rounds, cleaning the chamber and bore every 5 rounds. Talk about tedious... This is something I'll need to do alone, otherwise I'd have to call a cold line every five rounds... Quote:
This is the exact setup I'm using, and I'm very happy with it. I only build 50 rounds at a time, usually, sometimes 100. You'll need cartridge trays, too. I've since added an electronic scale. Spend some more time in the reloading subforum for some powder ideas, and run them by Tom and I. I'm excited for you!

That RCBS single stage set-up is all you really need to get started. Heck, I've had mine since '77-'78. Works fine for my needs. Like 'Apples said, 50, maybe 100 rounds a pop; all you need. Think you'll enjoy handloading. Fun stuff.

I just loaded several test loads for mine, with a few different powder loads of ancient cardboard keg Hercules Red Dot. I'm hoping I that the lower end loads shoot well and don't stick in the barrel. Will report back this evening.
If I can find a single load that works in the carbine and stays subsonic, AND shoots in my Security Six, DW 15, Blackhawk convertible, and my Smith, I'll be happier than a clam in pig sheet. |

Nice, Spyder!
Duece, I have changed the front sight to a lower XS unit because since I've removed the rail the rear sight base sits lower on the receiver. No issues with threads or threading, but those holes near the muzzle are only so deep, the barrel at that point only so thick and their creation left dimples in the bore, however slight. The lower front sight base came with shorter screws that extend no lower than the first screws do. The action had an excessive amount of machining burrs which I removed with very small files. That took some time and patience. The bore isn't pretty. Overall, it's a neat gun and I'm willing to keep whittlin' away at it to make it right. Thing feeds everything, so that's good. Won't know how it shoots until after I get a barrel pro to examine the condition of this new bore. Again, if it is deemed mild, I will pressure lap the bore. Sending it back to Marlin only if the bore is a lost cause. If I hit the Mojave to pressure lap the carbine, no one would want to go due to the constant need to clean the gun during the process and I remove my hearing pro to do that (need to remove prescription eyewear for better close vision). I am willing to make several Mojave runs in the next few weeks, though! Let's go cho0tin!

After watching this thread (and a few others regarding lever action rifles), it seems that Marlin has yet to finally get their act to where I might give them a second chance. I have a friend who in the last year aquired an 1895 in .45-70, stainless, and it too has been plagued by QC issues, to the point that a complete tear down, stoning, lapping, re-tapping of various threaded holes, and straightening of sights was needed, and it still shoots at a mediocre level. This has been verified by a number of very competent marksmen, so we know the issues are not shooter induced. It is in my view sad, as I had hoped that an American company could do better; however I fully realize that they must move product at a price point that keeps them afloat. Considering that most of the consumers are not as likely to be dedicated to a level of performance that a small percentage are, and the product basically works, they are then good to go.
I certainly hope that at some point an outfit such as Miroku or Henry starts to produce a clone of the Marlin design, as I'm sure it would be much closer to what I expect. And I'd be willing to pay a lot more for that quality increase. |

Golf,
Marlin 1894C 357/38spl. Loose front sight at dross. Took it anyway. Metal piece in bottom of threaded hole. Clowns screwed it in as far as the screw would go. Sight still obviously loose. Cleaned holes and ran the distorted threads. Had to modify a tap to do it. Sad that a company in financial trouble would let that out the door. Love that lever gun. |

Won’t get tondetailed writeup today but...I put a couple hundred rounds through my stainless 1894csbl today. Not one hiccup, and it was easily ringing an 8” steel at a hundred yards.
I shot mostly 158 bayou bullets through it, with mostly red dot loads and all 38 Special. Lowest was 2.8 grains at ~740fps, highest was a forgotten load at 1100fps. Last week I put two boxes of 357 magnum factory mag tech stuff through it, also with no problems. I’ll be upping the load to about 950fps and if it shoots as well there, will leave it alone and load the same for all my revolvers as well. The 2.8 load was around 520fps out of my 4” Dan Wesson and Ruger and a hair faster from the longer Blackhawk, and 720-740 or so out of the CSBL. Recoil with that load was like a 22. Recoil with the magnums was still really light. Running the lever as fast as it would go I hit the 8” fifty yard steel damn near every time, and slowing down I hit the hundred yard well over half. Cheap bushnell red dot on it with a battery that was dying so it was way too dim in the sunlight. I love this thing. I had it threaded before it was sent to my FFL, as I plan to leave CA eventually and it seemed like the right thing to do. I have not installed the ranger loading gate yet, or done any polishing or cleaning of any kind yet. Maybe next week when I find time again. I believe that my prior issue with not being able to zero the red dot is from the barrel being screwed back in a hair too tight after threading and the front sight is juuuuust canted right. I don’t think I notice it when holding it, but maybe... I’ll check it with a plumb line and straighten her out if needed, but I’ll likely get a higher quality low profile red dot that will live on it. I’m in lust with this thing. It’s going to fight my 1894 cowboy in 45 colt to be my favorite, and will likely win... |

If it weren't for that medallion and the added checkering... AND if it were just one year older (born in '55), that would be a desirable rifle to me. Otherwise, the .30 WCF (.30-30) exhibits recoil beyond it's meager ballistics. I'd rather have .44 Magnum for those ranges (to 150 yds) and then .41 Magnum (to 200) in a lever carbine or 7.62 X 39 in a CZ 527 Carbine -all rifles already in the armory. Now, if I had money to burn...
