Itís less likely to deform, so it gives you a denser pattern, hits the clays harder, and breaks them more consistently. The primary benefit to harder lead is probably the denser pattern that allows no holes for the target to slip through, and more pellets on the target to break it (single pellets do sometimes go through even a brittle target without breaking it).
