There are occasional tryouts for the AMU, but many of the soldiers in the AMU are recruited directly out of high school and college.

A lot of them were exceptional shooters in National Junior Competitions and caught the eye of the AMU Coaches at USA Shooting National Championships and the Nationals at Camp Perry.

Many that shoot NCAA rifle in college choose to continue in shooting by joining the Army and either going to the AMU, or the Army WCAP (World Class Athlete Program). Some choose to become commissioned officers, but most just enlist as it is more beneficial to be a non-commissioned officer in the AMU. The commissioned officers end up being moved to leadership positions in other Army Units.

Even if you don't want to go to the Olympics you could be part of their Service Rifle team, or the Action Pistol Team. Whatever floats your boat.
