Shooting a man-size target with a AK 47 and missing it at 200m(220 yards)

Recently a friend of mine sent me a youtube where discovery channel made a comparision between the m16 and the AK 47.Two guy were shooting them at a indoor range. The guy with the AK 47,who is a gun expert, shot 5 rounds but only one hit the target.Since this means that you can hit only the 20% of the targets you're shooting at.So...the question is:How the hell is that possible?
When I was serving in the SLO army, we were equipped with the M70.To qualify, you had to hit the target(fatal wounds, center of the mass or head) at least 25/30 times-at 200-250m(220y-275yds).And I was at 28/30.So how is it possible that an expert(experienced shooter) wasn't able to place 4/5 or even 5/5 on the target?...IMO he should switch to another job

Paid to miss

Sloppy gun, shot out barrel, too much coffee.
Any number of reasons.

Can you share the AK47 video link? I'll share my uneducated analysis of it. :D

Sounds like one of those machine guns at the fair...

I have not shot a Rimfire AK

I also have not yet been to an indoor 200 Meter range...

As its on you tube, can you share the URL?

Unregulated sights, gun out of spec, zero effort given?

Jimi Jah 09-13-2021 9:34 AM

Never seen a .22LR AK before.

East Germans made a cool select fire version. Would love to have one.

What is SLO? I know it isn’t San Luis Obispo.

Before the pandemic, my friend bought one at Turners around $200, it is not a real AK-47 but a replica AK-47 shoot .22LR.

Canted front sight probably.

Discovery Channel is fun to watch, but heavy on the entertainment and light on the facts.

I was watching some program about DaVinci a few years back and the group in the show made one of DaVinci's volley guns "for the first time it has ever been done"..... apparently the 300 year old example sitting in a museum in Austria didn't count. And that was only the first "never been done before/hasn't been done in 500 years" example that I personally know is incorrect to appear on one of their shows.

You're asking how is it possible to miss? It's easy; I could even do it blindfolded.

But seriously, like others said, Discovery is more about entertainment than facts.

And where is this 200 meter indoor range?

Wordupmybrotha 09-14-2021 8:35 PM

With or without a scope?
With just iron sights, it's not a walk in the park.

I am assuming he means Slovenia, which would be why he refers to the M70 (licensed AK47 copy) rifle which was used by them starting in 1970.

Maybe he knows my friend Rajmond Debevec?

This is the video.

And I'm not sure why this is in the Rimfire Forum. They weren't shooting .22s in the video.

Quiet 09-16-2021 5:24 AM

Not a rimfire topic, thread moved from rimfire forum to centerfire forum.

I'm sure he meant SLA, which was the so-called Symbionese Liberation Army made famous by Patty Hearst back around 1974.

Pay no attention to the OP, this is just DonaldBabbett back again, like a bad burrito, burp.

highpower 09-16-2021 5:44 AM

Robski hits targets out to 500 meters with great regularity using a AK47. I haven't watched the video, but I suspect the reason that knucklehead can't hit a target that large is either incompetence or he was deliberately trying to miss.

I have one built from a kit and another still unbuilt I need to sell. Never shot it at 200 though.

smle-man 09-16-2021 6:44 AM

I thought it was interesting that the M16 in the video was ejecting cases forward. Every M16A1 I fired ejected the cases almost straight back so as a left handed shooter I got them on my neck and cheek.

Sights suck on the AK and shooting in low light with those sights could lead to limited hits on the target.

Thanks Beanz. I got this one via Atlantic a few years back. Tons of fun, eats everything I feed it. Mags can be an issue (availability/variety) the one pictured is a WASR-22 mag from Black Dog. Had to shave the lug a little for fitment, but it works well.

As for OPís question, unless you have some serious mechanical issues with the rifle, 200-250m hits on a Ďman size targetí with an AKM isnít rocket surgery.

Have a link to the video with this Ďexpertí shooting?

I’m guessing he did not zero that AK, just pulled it off the rack and shot it. That said I replace all my AK rear sights with a peep sight, works so much better. Especially if your eyes are aging.

really a worthless video

Verdha603 09-17-2021 11:22 AM

Part of the problem is that you took a Discovery Channel video on guns seriously; many of the gun-related material released by the likes of Discovery Channel, History Channel, or Military Channel (now called the American Heroes Channel), especially from the 90's, 2000's, and early 2010's did not do a very good job of having any nuance or objectivity when it came to talking about guns, with many devolving into little more than trash talking any non-US gun out there and putting anything US-made on a pedestal.

A lot of the Tales of the Gun episodes from the History Channel or Top 10 weapons videos from the Military Channel are chock full of poor information that would even wander into the realm of Fudd-lore if taken at face value.

As for the lack of accuracy, my best guess is that the shooter didn't zero the Kalashnikov before firing it, he had poor trigger control (at least based on the video it looked like he was slapping the trigger instead of riding the reset), or while its unlikely the barrel could also be in poor condition. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it was a combination of two or all three of those.

The perceived inaccuracy of the Kalashnikov rifle has been tossed around for decades, with a majority of it being due to US shooters applying target rifle standards to a combat rifle that was designed and intended to be a bigger, more powerful submachine gun replacement. It was never designed to be a 1 MOA rifle with adjustable target sights that would win competitions at a formal shooting competitions, but because that's been the mindset of how US shooters assess rifles for the last 150 years, it gets a bad rap for not fitting the US standards of what a good rifle is.

Even with cheap military surplus ammunition a Kalashnikov built to specifications will be a 3-4 MOA rifle, meaning it should keeping all your shots inside a roughly 12 inch circle at 300 yards. That's not going to win you any competitions, and its certainly not going to earn you any praise from the folks that demand 1 MOA or smaller groups out of their rifles, but unless you can find me an army of adult soldiers that are skinnier than 12 inches across, that's still considered effective against man sized targets at normal combat ranges.

SanDiego619 09-17-2021 11:40 AM

I couldn't even see a man sized target at 200 meters.

Shooting a man-size target with a AK 47 and missing it at 200m(220 yards)

I hit a 10x10 plate with Barnaul 123 at 300 yards pretty easily with my M70 and iron sights. I think thatís only 270 meters though. Iím just a non-military yahoo. Surely a gun expert should be able to do much better.

Rob Ski can do it at 500.

Maybe. Best I could do with a China Norinco AK at 50yds was an 8 inch circle group. Didnít even bother trying at 100 yds, left that range for the AR and M1A.

Interesting.

I regularly hit bowling pins at 75 yards with my MAK-90 ( iron sights ), and I am no expert. Just a casual shooter.

The Discovery Channel is absolute trash. When they had those tornado chasers getting out of their gizmo SUV and laughing as they watched and videoed a twister tearing through a small town that only confirmed what I thought about the channel and the people associated with it.
